Thought I’d start a new thread now the cricket season is here. I may end up talking to myself and hopefully reading the good stuff bluetornados finds around the media about the county game.
Anyway two games into the season I’ll start. As I’m sure most know I’m a Somerset CCC member but the first team I saw was Gloucestershire CCC in the early 60s and I don’t do angry rivalry with our closest rivals. I hope GCCC have a good season and it was great to see James Bracey get his century today. Hopefully, after 3 wretched seasons he has a great one to show his true class. Somerset have made a fairly consistent good start, a winning draw at Kent and probably a losing draw today at the Oval. Although when they were 5 wickets down it looked as if it had flipped before they shook hands. In Division One I think Surrey will be the team to beat and I think they will be champions again. They have an incredibly strong squad, one that few other counties can compete with. I’ve always though Hampshire should have done better with Abbas and Abbott to open the bowling but I think their chance has gone and age is catching up with the team though they have started to give youngsters a go. Somerset will do well I think to keep their place in Division One. We missed our chance 3/4 years ago and we are building a new generation team with youngsters who have great promise and others who have had their best years, especially the bowlers. Watch out for Kasey Aldridge a very promising all rounder and of course James Rew, although I’m nervous for him in his second season. The county bowlers will know far more about him now! Of course we have to do it this way with youngsters because we can’t bring in some of the great overseas players Surrey have. Though to be fair to Surrey they also have a great youth policy with lots of youngsters coming through. Looking forward to Friday this week, my first visit to the County Ground to see Somerset v Nottinghamshire. Looking forward to it.
Harder to say who will do well in Division Two. If Gloucestershire can show the backbone they’ve shown in this match v Yorkshire they have a chance, similar with Glamorgan but it looks a very open division although Yorkshire must eventually come good. And if they can capitalise on having Brook and Root for the early games they should go up.
What’s been surprising with all these green pitches around is the huge amount of runs that have been scored. Few innings under 200 and some record scores and several double centuries already. Of the 10 Division games so far only 1 win/loss and 9 draws whilst in Division 2 of the 8 games there have been 8 draws. Come on bowlers this is usually your time of the year!
Anyway, look forward to others joining in.

Tom Abell: Somerset all-rounder tears hamstring in pre-season game..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/107A9/production/_133079476_gettyimages-2128236520.jpg Tom Abell was batting for Somerset during their three-day pre-season match against the University of Exeter when he was injuredSomerset all-rounder Tom Abell is expected to be out for a number of weeks after tearing his hamstring during a pre-season match. Abell was injured while batting against the University of Exeter this week. The 30-year-old will be unavailable for Somerset's match at Kent on Friday. "At present, we're not quite able to determine the extent of the tear so it's difficult to put a timeframe on it but we will certainly be looking at a few weeks," said head coach Jason Kerr. "Obviously, it's disappointing and frustrating for Tom and we'll be doing everything that we can to support him through his recovery." Hi WG, great initials, Such an important player for Somerset, the last thing you want is an all-rounder getting injured...

County Championship: Tom Lammonby helps Somerset to a likely draw against Kent..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1ED1/production/_133098870_lammo.jpg Somerset's Tom Lammonby has now passed fifty 15 times for SomersetKent and Somerset look to be heading for a draw in their opening County Championship game of the season draw at Canterbury, after the visitors reached 374-7 at stumps to lead by 90 runs on day three. Tom Lammonby hit 90 and Matt Renshaw 66 as the visitors survived an early evening wobble to overhaul Kent's first innings score of 284. Kent spinner Matt Parkinson (2-116) and debutant George Garrett (2-61) were both among the wickets but a stand of 101 between James Rew (57) and Kasey Aldridge (50 not out) earned Somerset a potentially useful lead. The draw always looked the most likely outcome after 119 overs were lost to the elements on days one and two, but if Kent were going to force the issue they needed to exploit the new ball and they could not. Rain, rain go away, come back another day....

Migael Pretorius: South African seamer to play six red-ball games for Somerset..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16EC2/production/_133109839_gettyimages-1522558115.jpg Migael Pretorius spent a number of months last summer with DurhamSomerset have signed South African seamer Migael Pretorius for six red-ball matches this season. The 29-year-old will join the club ahead of their second County Championship fixture of the season against Surrey on Friday at 11am. Pretorius had a spell last summer with Durham and has taken 165 wickets in 65 first-class matches. He was named in the Proteas Test squad in 2020 and their T20 squad a year later but has not made his debut. "With Will Sutherland becoming unavailable due to injury, we wanted to make sure that we were able to bring in a similar kind of player," said Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry. "In his time with Durham last season, Migael proved that he can perform and take wickets in English conditions. "He is a quality player and very driven, so he will certainly add value and depth to our attack. There is a lot of cricket ahead of us, so it's vital that we maximise the options that we have available to us." Great signing, hope he plays all 6 games...

Shoaib Bashir: Somerset & England spinner 'made effort to prove a point' after setback..By Alistair Durden and Sophie Hurcom, BBC Points West and BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/181C/production/_133127160_shutterstock_editorial_14422872w.jpg Shoaib Bashir will make his season debut for Somerset in their second County Championship match against SurreySomerset and England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir says being told he was not good enough to make it made him more determined to "prove a point". The 20-year-old made his England debut in February after a surprise call-up for the Test Series in India. Bashir was released by Surrey as a teenager before being signed by Somerset. "It's not easy being a young kid and then getting told you're not quite good enough to make it," Bashir said. "Getting up from that and knowing if you want something that bad you want to put in work for it, that's sort of what I did. I really made an effort to improve myself as a cricketer and tried to prove a point." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D784/production/_133127155_gettyimages-2067804104.jpgBashir made his international debut in February in the second Test against IndiaBashir said it had been a "surreal couple of months" after making his England debut. He only made his Somerset debut last season, playing in six first-class matches, seven limited-overs matches and five games during their T20 winning Blast campaign. "The winter's been quite the experience starting with the Lions out in Abu Dhabi on that two-week camp and then from there getting called up to play for your country. It's been such a surreal couple of months and one that I'll cherish for a long time," he told BBC Points West. "I got picked up from pretty much nowhere - Somerset came to me out of the blue and so has England as well. "I'm just so grateful for the opportunity and so thankful to God because without him none of this would have happened." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B45C/production/_133127164_gettyimages-1977259489.jpgBashir said he is open to a loan move away from Somerset with England team-mate Jack Leach also in the squadHe said he is prepared for the conditions at home to be completely different to those he experienced in India. "I'm still young, I'm still learning the game. I'm quite excited for what's to come. I know bowling in County Championship conditions early doors in this rain is part of the experience as well. I'm still trying to develop my skills," Bashir said. "Bowling with different paces, different trajectories I need to work on, but also pace changes because the ball doesn't spin as much as it did in India so you've got to beat the batsman in different ways."

County Championship: Surrey hit back after Lammomby century for Somerset..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12FA5/production/_133133777_shutterstock_editorial_14432077k.jpg Tom Lammonby's hundred was his seventh in first-class cricketMatt Renshaw's run out for 87 sparked a Somerset collapse that saw Surrey take the initiative on the opening day of their County Championship clash at the Oval. Renshaw departure in mid-afternoon saw the visitors go from 196-1 to an eventual 285 all out despite Tom Lammonby hitting exactly 100. Renshaw responded to Lammonby's call for a very sharp single, when he was on 99, after Jordan Clark initially fumbled at mid on. But Clark quickly pounced on the loose ball and, from behind the bowler's stumps, scored a direct hit at the wicketkeeper's end. Lammonby and Renshaw had built an impressive 178-run stand for the second wicket but Somerset then lost seven wickets for 20 runs in 13.1 overs. It took a pugnacious 50 from skipper Lewis Gregory, supported by Shoaib Bashir's 10 not out in a last-wicket partnership of 49, to haul Somerset up to a respectable first-innings total. Surrey replied with 42 without loss in 15 overs before the close.

County Championship: Surrey draw with Somerset after attempting rapid chase..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9A46/production/_132849493_renshawgettyimages-1396866562.jpg Matt RenshawSurrey fell short in an exciting fourth-day run chase against Somerset as their County Championship Division One match ended in a draw. Chasing 209 in 19 overs, Dan Lawrence and Jamie Smith hit 32 off the seventh and eight overs to take their stand to 90 and set up the prospect of a first win of the season for the champions. But Surrey lost five wickets in the next five overs to stop their charge and they settled for a draw at The Oval. Play did not start until 12:10 BST and when Surrey took the new ball Somerset's lead was only 100. But Somerset captain Lewis Gregory, resuming on 23, hit a 188-ball 80 in his side's second-innings 351. Gregory had come in on day three with his side five wickets down and only nine runs in front, but he got good support from Kasey Aldridge (42) and Craig Overton (52 not out) in four-and-a-quarter hours at the crease. Gregory took the lead beyond 200 before his vigil ended somewhat tamely with a cut to point, but he appeared to have taken victory away from Surrey. That proved to be the case, but Somerset were made to sweat by Lawrence and Smith. Smith twice hit Craig Overton back over his head into the pavilion and pulled a short ball from Migael Pretorius over mid-wicket for his third six, but trying to clear long on off the first ball of the ninth over he was well caught by Matt Renshaw running in from the boundary for 45 off 25 balls. Ollie Pope slashed the second delivery of the 10th over from Aldridge over point for six but he was bowled later in the over attempting a repeat. Aldridge picked up two wickets in the 12th over as Jamie Overton slogged one in the air and skipper Rory Burns was caught on the boundary for a four-ball duck. Gregory then held a steepler to remove Dom Sibley off his own bowling. Lawrence was unbeaten on 53 from 34 balls when the players shook hands with five overs left and Surrey 123-5. Lord Ian Botham stand at Somerset County Cricket Club could be expanded under new plans.i2-prod.somersetlive.co.uk/incoming/article6514354.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Location-of-the-Lord-Ian-Botham-Stand-at-Somerset-County-Cricket-Club-in-Taunton-LED-Architects-190122.pngSomerset cricket fans will soon have more space to see their team play under new proposals to expand one of the existing stands. The Lord Ian Botham Stand lies at the northern end of the Cooper Associate Cricket Ground in Taunton, near to the River Tone. Somerset County Cricket Club has applied for permission to build a new third storey on the strand, arguing it requires the extra capacity for both fans and the media on match days. Somerset West and Taunton Council is expected to make a decision on the plans by the early spring. The two-storey stand - named in honour of arguably England's greatest all-rounder - was erected in the mid-1990s. While it remains structurally sound and completely safe, the stand is not providing sufficient space for fans or the press due to its original layout. A spokesman for LED Architects (representing the club) said: "The building currently provides external stadia seating, toilets facilities, concessions and five spectator boxes. "During televised games, two of these boxes are given over to media use but were not designed for this purpose. This also reduces the club's potential income. "In addition, the existing toilet facilities on the upper levels are currently inadequate, both in number and quality. "By remodelling the second floor, additional toilet facilities can be provided at that level. Removing the existing roof and adding a third floor creates additional spectator boxes and a specific media/ commentary box. i2-prod.somersetlive.co.uk/incoming/article6514355.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Proposed-elevation-of-the-new-Lord-Ian-Botham-Stand-at-Somerset-County-Cricket-Club-in-Taunton-LED-Architects-190122.pngProposed elevation of the Lord Ian Botham Stand at Somerset County Cricket Club in Taunton"Accessible toilet facilities are provided as well as a covered roof terrace area which can be used by the media during televised games." The club has hosted a number of high-profile matches in the recent past - including three matches in the group stage of the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The remodelled stand will be coated in a zinc finish to complement the style of both the Marcus Trescothick stand and the Pegasus apartments. Somerset's three matches so far have all been draws v Kent, Exeter University and Surrey... Like you WG, i have been a big fan since the Botham, Garner and Richards days. Amazing how they never won the County Championship with them, away on int duty likely reason.

Thanks for all the articles bt. Appreciated as ever. Yes Tom Abell is a big loss and we’ve got Tom Koehler-Cadmore to come in after IPL. I think the batting could be a bit thin but so far we’ve done well. Tom Lammonby after a lean couple of years has started well and Kasey Aldridge looks a great prospect as an all-rounder. 8 of yesterdays XI came through the academy or youth sides which is the only way Somerset can do it. Time will tell whether they are good enough as they try to build the next team to challenge for the CC.

The pair shared a fifth-wicket stand of 199, Bracey making 102 as they batted from the start to the brink of tea, rescuing their side from a perilous overnight position of 97-4, chasing 498 to win. Price's fourth first-class ton and Bracey's 10th frustrated the Yorkshire attack, allowing Gloucestershire to close on 405-6.

Sat in Taunton enjoying the cricket. Somerset meandering to a healthy lead. (Or were until Rew and Gregory have just been out in last two overs.) Cricket not the most exciting. Got to be looking at 300+ giving 5hem a lead of 100 or so.

Lammonby steers Somerset to draw against Pears..www.cityam.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/GettyImages-1690945985.jpgTom Lammonby continued his excellent start to the season and played a major role as Somerset earned a hard-fought County Championship draw at Kidderminster against newly promoted Worcestershire. Lammonby dug in to score his third half-century of the season, in addition to his hundred against champions Surrey. Receiving excellent support from Andy Umeed, who hit his best Somerset score of 60 in a decisive fourth-wicket partnership at Chester Road, Lammonby's unbeaten 81 lifted his run tally for the campaign past the 350 mark. When the duo joined forces, Somerset were still 76 runs in arrears at 66-3 but they effectively blunted the Pears attack to bat throughout the afternoon session in adding 117 in 39 overs. Lammonby enjoys facing Worcestershire, having become in 2020 Somerset's youngest player, at the age of 20, to carry his bat through an innings in a crucial four-day Bob Willis Trophy game at New Road. This time his efforts helped sealed a fourth successive draw for Somerset and a third in four games for Worcestershire - as well as a home defeat by Durham - since gaining promotion. Nightwatchman Jake Ball frustrated Worcestershire during the opening hour and also did the bulk of the scoring, as Renshaw weighed anchor. But Adam Finch bowled Ball for 29 before home captain Brett D'Oliveira brought himself into the attack shortly before lunch and accounted for Renshaw, whose attempted to paddle sweep the leg-spinner earned a simple catch to Kashif Ali at short leg. Lammonby completed a solid half-century from 126 balls and Umeed brought up his 50 - from 117 deliveries - before falling to a fine return one-handed reflex catch by Ben Gibbon as the visitors closed on 190-4. Flood-hit Worcestershire end their two-match stay at their Chester Road second home for another year. When the Pears next host next a Championship game on 25 May it will be back at New Road. Before then Somerset host leaders Essex at Taunton next week. Worcestershire now have 11 days off before facing Kent at Canterbury. Somerset head coach Jason Kerr told BBC Radio Somerset:“Coming into the final day, the first hour was going to be a challenging time and we had to get through this without any scares. “Bally [Jake Ball] did his job overnight but also this morning very well and the guys played brilliantly throughout the day. “We had some spells with the ball that were outstanding but we were not quite at our best collectively. We just have to be a little bit better. “We are still searching for that first win because of a combination of the type of balls used, skills not quite being good enough and the surfaces, but we have been incredibly competitive.”

Gloucestershire waiting for first win after Middlesex draw..i2-prod.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/incoming/article9204425.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Sussex-Sharks-v-Gloucestershire-Metro-Bank-One-Day-Cup.jpgOllie PriceGloucestershire’s long wait for a County Championship victory continued as their Division Two match against Middlesex at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol petered out into a draw. On a day which began with all three results still possible, Middlesex did their utmost to force a result by declaring their second innings on 449-7 and setting the home side a target of 339 to win in 58 overs on a hybrid pitch offering negligible assistance to the bowlers. The visitors still fancied they had an outside chance of prevailing when reducing their opponents to 102-3 in the final session with 27 overs still available, but Ollie Price displayed resilience in compiling an unbeaten 52 as Gloucestershire reached 127-3. Resuming their second innings on 262-3, Middlesex had earlier played positively in adding a further 187 in 36 overs, Ryan Higgins top-scoring with 155 and sharing in a stand of 202 for the fourth wicket with Max Holden, who contributed 111. Stephen Eskinazi’s breezy 65 not out prompted the declaration, which came half an hour into the afternoon session. Gloucestershire were never in a position to realistically pursue a first red-ball win since September 2022. Their 11-point haul from this game allowed Middlesex to overtake Sussex and assume leadership of the table after four matches, while Gloucestershire collected 13 points to move off the bottom.

Somerset appoint England captain Heather Knight as cricket adviser..djor3ri07nw7w.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/30103427/GettyImages-821272808-2048x1270.jpgEngland captain Heather Knight has joined Somerset's board as an adviser. Plymouth's Knight, 33, is a former Somerset academy player and led Western Storm to two Super League titles. She has also played more than 260 times for England in all formats of the game and has captained her country since June 2016. "To have someone with Heather’s vast knowledge and experience advising our board is a real feather in the cap for Somerset," the county's chairman Sir Michael Barber said. "As England captain, Heather has been at the forefront of the evolution of the women’s game, and it is her generation of players who have helped to shape the direction in which women’s cricket is currently traveling. “She is a World Cup winner, a genuine leader and someone who knows exactly what cricket means to the people of the south west. She is therefore perfectly placed to advise us on all facets of the game.” Knight's role will be to advise on cricket throughout the club, not just the county's women's side, according to chief executive Gordon Hollins. "To ensure that our club remains at the top table of the English domestic game, it is essential that we have the very best people with the appropriate skills in positions that allow them to positively influence the club and the game," he said. "This appointment enables us to utilise the knowledge and skills of one of the most respected people within, not just the women’s game, but the game as a whole. “With Somerset being awarded Tier 1 women’s status, there has never been a more important time for us to ensure that we are at the forefront of the women’s game, and there is nobody better equipped to aid us with this progression than the England captain. “Heather’s role will not be limited to women’s cricket, and we feel that she is perfectly placed to help us to develop, evolve and plan for the future.”

Cricketer Josh Baker, 20, was found dead by pal at home after he didn't show up for match..By Dan Marsh, Senior Sports Reporter.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32725104.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_Leicestershire-County-Cricket-Club-v-Worcestershire-County-Cricket-Club-LV-Insurance-County-Champi.jpgWorcestershire cricketer Josh Baker was found dead in his home by a friend after he did not show up on the third day of his county's second-team match against Somerset. The death of the talented left-arm spinner, 20, was announced on Thursday, sending the cricket community into mourning. Baker made his first-class debut for Worcestershire in July 2021 and was twice capped by England at Under-19 level. The Mail have detailed that Baker was found in his home by a friend who had gone looking for him after he did not show up for Worcestershire seconds' match against Somerset. Baker had not answered calls, which prompted his friend to head to his apartment. The match between Worcestershire and Somerset was abandoned and announced as a draw following the news, which was confirmed by his county in a statement. The statement read: “Worcestershire County Cricket Club is heartbroken to announce the untimely passing of Josh Baker, who was aged only 20 years old. “Josh turned professional with the Club in 2021 and quickly became a popular figure within the squad. More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met. His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team. “During this profoundly difficult time, the Club is dedicated to supporting Josh’s family, friends, and colleagues. We are united in our grief and committed to honouring his memory in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32723173.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Nottinghamshire-County-Cricket-Club-v-Worcestershire-County-Cricket-Club-Vitality-County-Championsh.jpg“Plans to pay tribute to Josh will be made in consultation with his family and will remain private at this time. The Club, along with Josh’s family, requests the respect of privacy as we mourn this immense loss. No further comments will not be provided during this sensitive period.” Former England spinner Ashley Giles, who is now Worcestershire's CEO, also paid tribute to Baker following the tragic news of his passing. Giles said: “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated. Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family.

Friday 3rd - Saturday 4th May 2024 - County Championship - Division One - Day 2 of 4 - Somerset hold nerve to beat Essex..
Essex - 156 all out & 138 all out - Overton, Ball, Pretorius, Gregory and Davey all took 4 match wickets..
Somerset - 128 all out & 170-7 - very low batting scores all round in a very poor match.
Somerset win by 3 wickets
Somerset's Matt Renshaw and Sean Dickson tamed a seaming pitch to lay the foundation for a three-wicket County Championship win over Essex inside two days at Taunton.
When the visitors were bowled out for 138 in their second innings, 30 wickets had fallen in the Division One match.
There were three each for Somerset seamers Josh Davey and Lewis Gregory as Jordan Cox top-scored with 27 on a still green wicket.
A target of 167 to win looked challenging for the home batting line-up, considering what had gone before.
However, Renshaw (35) and Dickson (42) put together an opening partnership of 75 and, although the Essex bowlers stuck gamely to their task, Somerset always looked favourites from then on.
Andy Umeed made 34 and Tom Banton's 29 off 50 balls almost took them over the line as they wrapped up a 19-point success, with Essex having to settle for three.
Essex resumed day two on six without loss but lost Dean Elgar and Sam Cook cheaply, before Tom Westley (11) and Nick Browne (23) followed to make it 95-4 at lunch.
Matt Critchley (21) and Cox departed and Noah Thain and Harry Duke took the score to 137 before the last four Essex wickets fell in quick succession.
Renshaw and Dickson set about the victory target positively, sharing an opening stand of 75 before Renshaw was out lbw.
Dickson followed in the next over but Umeed carried on applying pressure to the Essex bowlers, although Tom Lammonby departed for a 24-ball duck.
When Umeed edged a Shane Snater delivery, which cannoned off wicketkeeper Duke and looped to Simon Harmer at second slip, Somerset needed to keep their heads with 47 required.
Migael Pretorius and James Rew fell cheaply but Banton's largely sensible knock had almost seen his side home when he edged a slip catch.
Craig Overton hit the winning boundary off Jamie Porter in the second additional over of the day to give Somerset their first win of the season after four draws.

Somerset playing Kent, and looking at a probable win, but in their first innings Somerset faced 120 overs and Kent conceded just 6 extras of a total of 554 runs , amazing control... and currently after 32 overs have conceded just 3 extras and they were in the 32nd over,,,,,Somerset currently 139 -2, require another 50 runs to win
