India v England: Yashasvi Jaiswal leads hosts to massive win in Rajkot..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Rajkot.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10993/production/_132678976_benduckettisrunout.jpg Ben Duckett was run out to begin England's slide on the fourth dayEngland spiralled to a miserable and massive defeat by India on the fourth day of the third Test in Rajkot. In perhaps their worst performance since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge, England were dismantled by Yashasvi Jaiswal's 214 not out, then capitulated with the bat. Set a notional 557 to win, the tourists were bundled out for an embarrassing 122 in a blur of irresponsible strokes. The 434-run margin of defeat is England's largest in terms of runs since 1934 and India's biggest of all time. India, who take a 2-1 lead in the series, were led by the brilliant Jaiswal's second double century in as many Tests. The opener returned on 104 after retiring hurt on the third evening and took his tally to 12 sixes, equalling the record for a single Test innings. In partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, who made 68 not out, Jaiswal took India to a declaration on 430-4. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja ran through England's middle order for figures of 5-41, to go with the century he made in the first innings. The fourth Test begins on Friday in Ranchi, where an India win will preserve an unbeaten home record that stretches back to 2012. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3455/production/_132679331_yashasvijaiswal.jpg Yashasvi Jaiswal made 209 in the second Test and finished 214 not out in Rajkot
England captain Ben Stokes, speaking on TNT Sports: "Ben Duckett played an unbelievable innings and that was the tone we wanted to set throughout the whole innings. For us it is about identifying that opportunity to really push on and get as close as we could to India's total. I actually said I wanted to be bowling yesterday although it came earlier than we wanted, just because of how we felt the wicket was going. We wanted to push the game on as much as we could. Sometimes gameplans don't work out and that is sport sometimes." On the criticism of England's style of play: "Everyone has got a perception and opinion. The people in the dressing room are the opinions that really matter to us. Sometimes things don't work out how we want them to." On what's next: "2-1 down and two games left. We have a great opportunity for 3-2. "We leave this game behind us and know we have to win the next two games to win the series." More from captain Ben Stokes on England's slide from a strong position at the start of day three: "You look at situation found ourselves in on day three, the way I felt the day needed to go to give ourselves chance of winning was to press the button after the lunch break. "Me, personally, I sensed it as an opportunity to have one of my days out. I have got unbelievable belief in myself just like I have belief in everyone in there that they can turn the game in our favour. We wanted to be bowling at the back end of day three. It came earlier than we wanted to. It was unfortunate." More from Ben Stokes, speaking on TNT: "Every game has been filled with multiple unbelievable things to witness as a supporter. Jaiswal, that double hundred, was phenomenal to watch. Ben Duckett played an incredible knock. We are very disappointed to be on the wrong side of the result but one thing we are very good at as a team is to leave everything behind us - make sure we are focussing on what we have ahead. Games can be won and lost in the head. We will be leaving the disappointment and going on to the next one." On his own prospects of bowling in the series following injury: "I feel really good. I had my first bowl at 100%. As a person I like to jump the gun a little bit too much. I have said I have a whole body to get used to bowling. I am not saying no but I am not saying yes either." BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew: "It unravelled very quickly. It was extraordinary. This will reawaken all of the debate about so-called Bazball. It is great when it works but there seems an inability to go back to a more traditional way of playing. "England threw a chance away on the third day. I hope there is honesty in the dressing room."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the decision was taken "keeping in mind the duration of the series and amount of cricket he has played in recent times". Bumrah, the world's number one-ranked men's Test bowler, is the only frontline pace bowler in either side to have played in all three Tests so far. India lead the five-Test series 2-1. Bumrah, 30, is the top wicket-taker in the series so far, taking 17 at an average of 13.64. Batter KL Rahul again misses out with a quad injury and will be assessed again before the final Test in Dharamsala next month. Fast bowler Mukesh Kumar, who was released from the squad for the third Test in Rajkot, has joined up with the squad in Ranchi. India have come from behind to lead the series against England with a 434-run win in the third Test. India v England: Every chance Ben Stokes will bowl - Ollie Pope..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Ranchi.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/04/23/22/56967241-10746939-image-a-77_1650748253571.jpgThere is "every chance" England captain Ben Stokes will bowl in the fourth Test against India in Ranchi, according to vice-captain Ollie Pope. Stokes has not bowled competitively since the second Ashes Test in July and had knee surgery in November. The 32-year-old bowled in the nets on Wednesday as England, who are 2-1 down, prepare for Friday's fourth Test. "He will see how he pulls up tomorrow," Pope told BBC Sport. "If he's not too sore, that's a positive sign." Stokes has been hampered by a left knee issue for some time and despite efforts to get fully fit for the Ashes, he did not bowl in the last three Tests then not at all in the 50-over World Cup in the autumn. His operation in November involved removing bone spur and stitches in his meniscus. Stokes initially ruled himself out bowling on this tour, saying he had made a "pinky promise" to the England physio. But after England's defeat in the third Test, the Durham man opened the door to the possibility of taking the ball in the final two Tests, saying he had been able to bowl at "100%" in training. On Wednesday, Stokes bowled at batters in the nets for the first time since his surgery, then had a long conversation with team doctor Glen Rae. "He didn't want to put himself under too much pressure early by saying he's going to be bowling, so he's played it day by day with how his knee is feeling," said Pope. "I think he's been impressed by how his knee has been going. "He's had a good bowl against our batters. We know what he's like, he's got that competitive edge. There's every chance he'll bowl, but he's not confirmed it yet." If Stokes is able to bowl, it will provide England with a huge boost as they bid to avoid a first series defeat under his captaincy. Stokes is three wickets shy of becoming only the third man in Test cricket - after Jacques Kallis and Sir Garfield Sobers - to do the double of 6,000 runs and 200 wickets. His availability as a bowler would aid the balance of the team, with the Ranchi pitch suggesting England could revert to three frontline spinners in their XI. Pace bowlers James Anderson and Mark Wood are likely to sit out following their workload in the 434-run defeat in the third Test, so off-spinner Shoaib Bashir could to be recalled to join leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed and left-armer Tom Hartley. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/04/23/22/56967281-10746939-image-a-78_1650748294977.jpgOllie Robinson may play for the first time since the third Ashes Test as the sole seamer, supplemented by whatever Stokes is able to bowl. Pope described the Ranchi pitch as "interesting", with one side of the surface already cracked two days before the Test. "It does look slightly different on one side of the wicket to the other," said batter Pope. "The cracks in the wicket aren't just cracks, there are separate bits of ground that could open up with a lot of sun on them. The ball could deviate more off them if they open up like we expect them to."

India v England: Ben Stokes has 'never seen' anything like Ranchi pitch..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Ranchi.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1C20/production/_132700270_benstokes.jpg England must not lose in Ranchi if they are to avoid suffering a first series defeat since Ben Stokes took chargeEngland captain Ben Stokes says he has never seen anything like the pitch for the fourth Test against India. The surface in Ranchi has cracks running down one side, just outside a right-hander's off stump at one end and a left-hander's off stump at the other. At 2-1 down in the series, England need to win the game beginning on Friday to force a deciding fifth Test. "I've never seen something like that before. I have got no idea so I don't know what could happen," said Stokes. "If you looked down one side of opposite ends it just looked different to what I am used to seeing, especially out in India." All-rounder Stokes added: "It looked green and grassy up in the changing rooms, but then you go out there it looked different: very dark and crumbly and quite a few cracks in it." England will name their team on Friday, with a number of options at their disposal. James Anderson and Mark Wood played as a pace pairing for the first time in the series during the huge 434-run defeat in the third Test in Rajkot. England spent most of that game in the field in extreme heat, so there is a chance that neither Anderson nor Wood will be considered fully fit for Ranchi. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir could be recalled after missing the third Test, while Ollie Robinson is an option as the sole seamer in what would be his first game for England since the third Ashes Test. If England think run-scoring will be incredibly difficult, another alternative would be to lengthen their batting by including Dan Lawrence, who can also offer some part-time off-spin. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/21/18/81544933-13110015-image-a-39_1708539268365.jpgGroundstaff prepare the pitch during a nets session at JSCA International Stadium Complex
England's selection may be influenced by Stokes himself, who bowled in the nets in training on Wednesday for the first time since having knee surgery in November. Stokes initially ruled himself out of bowling on this tour, saying he had made a "pinky promise" to England physio Ben Davies. But after England's defeat in the third Test, the Durham man opened the door to the possibility of taking the ball in the final two Tests, saying he had been able to bowl at "100%" in training. The 32-year-old bowled for 35 minutes, then had a long conversation with team doctor Glen Rae. Stokes said his left knee was pain-free during the bowling spell, something that had not occurred for "years" and there is a "possible chance" he will bowl during the Test. "I will just have to wait and see how everything is," said Stokes. "It is the longest I have bowled in six months so let's see how everything pulls up." England came in for criticism following the defeat in Rajkot, their heaviest loss in terms of runs since 1934. Now they must not be beaten in either of the final two Tests in order to avoid a first series defeat under Stokes' captaincy. The skipper was not surprised at the reaction to England's drubbing by India in the third Test, with the team facing criticism. "It's sport," Stokes said. "You get plaudits when it goes well and not when it doesn't. It's part of it, I've been around long enough to know that, but we crack on. "Defeats like last week can have a bigger effect on the team that it needs to be. But I'm comfortable with how I addressed that - I know it's the next game that counts." India have rested fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, leaving 27-year-old Akash Deep in line for a Test debut.

India v England: Ollie Robinson & Shoaib Bashir replace Mark Wood & Rehan Ahmed for fourth Test..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Ranchi.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/21/20/81544373-13110015-Ollie_Robinson_is_set_to_play_his_first_game_of_any_cricket_sinc-a-45_1708547220468.jpg Ollie Robinson has taken 76 wickets in 19 Test matches for EnglandEngland have named Ollie Robinson and Shoaib Bashir in their side for the fourth Test against India in Ranchi. The tourists have once again picked two seamers, with Robinson coming in for Mark Wood, while off-spinner Bashir is recalled for leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed. Captain Ben Stokes did not confirm whether he will bowl in a Test for the first time since July following surgery on his left knee in November. India lead 2-1, meaning England must avoid defeat to keep the series alive. Stokes, coach Brendon McCullum, assistant coaches Paul Collingwood and Jeetan Patel, and selector Luke Wright all had a long look at the pitch in Ranchi before Stokes confirmed the XI on Thursday. On Wednesday, Stokes called it "interesting" and said he had "never seen" anything like it before, but 24 hours closer to the start of the Test, fears of it being incredibly difficult for batting appear to have eased. "I don't like to look for too much detail," Stokes told BBC Sport. "You want to have some indication of what it will play like, because that's how you pick the eleven. There is going to be the assistance for the spinners, but also the seam because of the dryness and cracks in the wicket." Pace bowler Wood misses out after a heavy workload in extreme heat in England's huge 434-run defeat in the third Test. Leg spinner Rehan, 19, is effectively omitted for the first time in his four-Test career. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/22/08/81568165-13112555-image-a-13_1708589944686.jpgShoaib Bashir (centre) returns to the side after making his debut in the second Test of the tourWith Bashir, Robinson and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley all in the same side, England have an array of tall bowlers that could extract any uneven bounce in the surface. "Players like Woody you want to be operating when they are completely 100% fresh in order to throw everything that he has at the opposition," said 32-year-old Stokes. "It was a Goliath effort last week from him. This break is good for him. "The skillset Bash has is his release point and how much bounce he can get. We looked at that wicket, we thought that Bash's skillset will give us more of a chance than what Rehan has got. That's obviously not any disrespect to what Rehan has, it's just how we pick our team, based on what we will think of giving us the best chance to win a Test." For 30-year-old Robinson, it is a return to the England side for the first time since the third Ashes Test at Headingley, when he struggled with a back injury. "He's been an incredible professional, the way in which he's operated," said Stokes. "The way he kept everything going, going and going through the obvious disappointment of not playing is a great way to operate. "Now the chance is here. He has done everything he has needed to and I'm really looking forward to seeing him out on the park again." Stokes bowled at batters in the nets on Wednesday for the first time since his surgery in November, raising the prospect that he could return to his role as all-rounder ahead of schedule. "[It] was a good day," he said. "I've pulled up really well. It's another step forward for me in terms of the ball. As keen as I am to get there, I do have to be very sensible about it." An India win will preserve their 12-year unbeaten record in home Test series. They have rested paceman Jasprit Bumrah, rated as the number one Test bowler in the world. "It is an important move from Jasprit Bumrah considering the amount of cricket he has," former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik told the Test Match Special podcast. "It's important for India to take care of their crown jewel bowler." India have recovered from losing the first Test in Hyderabad to win the next two and Karthik believes it will take "something special" from England to prevent the hosts from winning the series. "England have to put some big runs on the board," said Karthik. "Their bowling has been acceptable. There has been a lot of positivity around the bowling, but we can't say the same about the batting. "If the batting comes good they can put pressure on India, but if they don't bat well India will cruise to another Test series win in their home conditions." England team for fourth Test against India: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (captain), Ben Foakes (wicketkeeper), Tom Hartley, Ollie Robinson, James Anderson, Shoaib Bashir.

England opener Zak Crawley, speaking to TNT Sports about Joe Root: "We're so happy for him and we never doubted him. "If anything we know that when he's got a couple of low scores he's even more likely to get a big one and we expected that from him. "I said beforehand that if we get 280-300, we're in a very good position so I stand by that - we are ahead of the game." Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "A really good day for England and a masterful hundred from England's best player in Joe Root. This was the day England played the situation perfectly." Former England spinner Phil Tufnell: "That could be a match-winning innings from Joe Root. England have got a good score through his determination, application and skill. "It was a classical Joe Root innings."

Re Zac Crawley and his comments on Joe Root. Don't think anybody doubts his talent. It's just when he plays stupid 20/20 style cricket in a test match you have to doubt his mentality!!...but good to see he has put together a decent ton

India v England: Rehan Ahmed leaves tour because of urgent family matter..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Ranchi.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/39B3/production/_132717741_rehanahmed.jpg Rehan Ahmed has taken 18 wickets in four Tests for EnglandEngland leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed is leaving the tour of India because of an urgent family matter and will not return. The 19-year-old was not selected for the fourth Test in Ranchi, which began on Friday. Ahmed's omission from the team is not linked to his departure from the tour - his need to return home did not emerge until after the XI was announced. He will leave India later on Friday and England will not name a replacement. Ahmed's exit leaves England with a travelling squad of 14 players for the final two Tests. The two remaining frontline spinners, Shoaib Bashir and Tom Hartley, are both in the side for the fourth Test. Ahmed became the youngest man to play Test cricket for England when he made his debut as an 18-year-old against Pakistan in Karachi in December 2022. The Leicestershire man has played in each of the first three Tests on this tour, claiming 11 wickets. England have named three frontline spinners in two of the first three Tests but would have been unlikely to do that for the fifth Test in Dharamsala, where conditions are likely to be the most friendly towards seam bowling of the tour. Batter Harry Brook pulled out of the series before it began for personal reasons, while senior spinner Jack Leach went home after sustaining a knee injury in the first Test.

The youngest off-spinner to take a five-fer for England is Pat Pocock (21 years 256 days) against Australia at Old Trafford in 1968 (6-79). Shoaib Bashir would smash that by over a year if he can pick up one of the remaining three here. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/24/d3cf4a47-0643-4d3b-b6ec-c24dc1858032.jpg

Close: Ind 219-7 - It ends with a maiden - That ends another gripping day, and England find themselves in a very, very good position.
England batter Joe Root on TNT Sports: "We have had a good couple days. There is certainly stuff to build on in the rest of the Test match." On his century and the patient style: "That's [to play the conditions] how I try to play every game - play the conditions and the situation of the game. It was very obvious what was needed in that situation and surfaces. Thankfully it paid off." On the pitch: "It looks like it will keep getting worse. If we can get three early wickets hopefully that puts us in a really strong position." On whether he considered scooping to reach his century on day one: "It did briefly cross my mind. On that wicket it is not a great option. It was nice to contribute this week. It has been a lean series for me." On Shoaib Bashir: "He was brilliant. He is a great young lad to have in the group. I didn't know much about him before the series but he has got great character, sense of humour and a huge amount of ability and skill. It was great to see him keep coming time and again today. He should take a lot of confidence for the rest of this game and going forward as well." Report By Stephan Shemilt - Chief cricket writer in Ranchi..Shoaib Bashir's wonderful 4-84 gave England a golden opportunity to take control of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi. Off-spinner Bashir, playing only his second Test, bowled 31 consecutive overs in a spell that stretched across all three sessions of the second day. At one stage he picked up three wickets for five runs in 41 deliveries, then crucially got Yashasvi Jaiswal to chop onto his stumps for 73. From 177-7, India rallied to 219-7 thanks to an unbroken stand of 42 between Dhruv Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav, leaving the hosts 134 behind the 353 England were dismissed for on Saturday morning. Joe Root and Ollie Robinson added 102 for the eighth wicket, with Robinson making 58 for his first half-century in Test cricket. Robinson was the first of three wickets taken in 11 deliveries by Ravindra Jadeja, who mopped up the tail to leave Root unbeaten on 122. England may have sensed a chance to be batting again before the day was out, but Jurel and Kuldeep fought hard and face the prospect of the second new ball on the third morning.

England bowler Shoaib Bashir on TNT Sports: "It's still pretty surreal. I want to dedicate this to my two late grandads who passed away around a year and a half ago, they loved Test cricket and their wish was for me to play. I'm so grateful. "My favourite wicket was Jaiswal's. He's in top form and he's an incredible player so to get his wicket was surreal, too. "I used to watch some of the guys in my dressing room as a little kid. They're brilliant, they give me so much confidence and it's a wonderful group to be a part of that really gets the best out of you. "We'd have liked one or two wickets in that period at the end but we've got a big job to do tomorrow. On that pitch, anything is possible." IMO ENGLAND WILL CHUCK AWAY YET ANOTHER TEST MATCH FROM A POTENTIAL WINNING POSITION - UTTER RUBBISH...

India v England: Michael Vaughan calls for TV cameras in DRS trucks..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Ranchi.

England have been frustrated by a number of DRS decisions during their ongoing tour of India. "I'm not saying anyone is cheating," said Vaughan. "I'm trying to give an answer for when a decision is made and we all disagree with it. If the person on Hawk-Eye is filmed it puts the noise to bed." Basingstoke-based Hawk-Eye is providing the ball-tracking information for England's series in India. England's Joe Root appeared to be aggrieved on the third day of the fourth Test when he was given out on review to India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. In the same Test, England benefited from four 'umpire's call' lbw decisions during India's first innings. Earlier in the series, England captain Ben Stokes disagreed with opener Zak Crawley being given out to left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav during the second Test in Visakhapatnam. Then, after the third Test, Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum engaged in a discussion with match referee Jeff Crowe after Crawley again was given out to Jasprit Bumrah. At the time, Stokes called for 'umpire's call' to be removed from the DRS system. "You just want something that is consistent," Stokes told BBC Sport. "Umpire's call, personally I think we should just get rid of it. If it's hitting the stumps, it's hitting the stumps, then it's a level playing field." Vaughan, who led England in 51 of his 82 Tests, told the Test Match Special podcast on Sunday: "I can understand supporters on both sides being frustrated with the decisions that have been made. It doesn't look like Hawk-Eye is having a great series. "The most important operators of decisions now are in the trucks. We need to have a camera in the truck to give an understanding of how it all comes to that decision. "All I want is full transparency. If it takes the International Cricket Council employing someone to put in the trucks for integrity, they have to do that as well." Conversations between the third umpire and the on-field officials are heard in stadiums, and on television and radio broadcasts. "For the game in general, for people watching, we need to see who is operating, because the person operating the technology is more important than the umpires," added Vaughan. India ended the third day of the fourth Test on 40-0, needing another 152 runs to beat England and take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series.

INDIA BEAT ENGLAND BY FIVE WICKETS

The scoreline says India win by five wickets but I don't think that gives enough credit to sum up the game as a whole. "There were so many ebbs and flows, and I've got to give so much credit to our spinners Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir for how they performed not only today, but during the whole Test match. Being exposed like that, at such an early stage of their careers, it's incredible I couldn't be more proud of them in particular but also the whole team for the performances this week. "That's the way I am as a captain - allowing these guys to come into what could be a very intimidating situation against India in a Test match, to treat every ball as on occasion rather than thinking something in the past that can't be changed. The series has shown a lot of talent, for us and India. I love Test cricket and we've seen some young, inexperienced players perform and the future looks bright in this format." More from England captain Ben Stokes on TNT Sports: "We've been very good in periods. Yesterday, that was incredibly hard when we were batting - in those conditions against Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep, scoring becomes very difficult. We didn't think the pitch was going to get any better and we saw that today but they bowled extremely well. It was a tough period for us. "You come into series, and you want to win them. I've been doing this for two years now and my message is always consistent, it's about your input to the team and don't worry too much about the output. Everyone has thrown everything into every Test match here, nothing has been left out on the field and that's all I will ever ask from them." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E527/production/_132736685_gilldurel.jpgIndia v England: Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel seal series in Ranchi..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Ranchi.England threatened to pull off a famous victory only for India to seal the series with a five-wicket win on the fourth day of the fourth Test in Ranchi. Shoaib Bashir took two wickets in two balls just after lunch to leave India five down and 72 runs short of their target of 192. But Shubman Gill made a chanceless unbeaten 52, sharing an unbroken stand of 72 with Dhruv Jurel, who ended 39 not out. India had earlier been cruising, only to lose three wickets for 16 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal skewed Joe Root to James Anderson to be out for 37, Rohit Sharma edged Tom Hartley behind on 55 and Rajat Patidar was out to Bashir for a duck. Scoring stopped, tension rose and England's belief grew. When Bashir pulled off his double strike, the prospect of an England win began to feel like a reality. Instead India take an unassailable 3-1 lead and stretch a proud unbeaten home record that dates back to 2012, while England suffer their first series defeat under Ben Stokes' captaincy. There is a break of more than a week before the fifth and final Test in Dharamsala begins on 7th March.
