India vs England: KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja to miss second Test..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Hyderabad.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16647/production/_132491719_rahuljadeja.pngKL Rahul (left) and Ravindra Jadeja have played 119 Tests between themIndia all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and batter KL Rahul have been ruled out of the second Test against England, adding to the hosts' problems. Jadeja suffered a hamstring injury and Rahul a quadriceps issue during England's 28-run win in the first Test. India are already without star batter Virat Kohli, pace bowler Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Sarfaraz Khan, Sourabh Kumar and Washington Sundar have been added to the squad for Friday's second Test. Uncapped Sarfaraz, 26, is a middle-order batter with a first-class batting average of 69.85, the fourth-highest of all-time. Spin-bowling all-rounder Sundar, 24, has played four Tests, including three on England's last tour here, a 3-1 defeat in 2021. He made his debut in India's famous win against Australia in Brisbane earlier that year. Kumar is a 30-year-old left-arm spinner, with almost 300 wickets in first-class cricket. Former captain Kohli withdrew from the first two Tests in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam for personal reasons. Pant is a long-term absentee following a road accident, while Shami has a heel injury. India already had much to ponder after letting England overturn a 190-run first-innings deficit to pull off one of their greatest ever overseas wins. Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav now seems set to play in Visakhapatnam, while uncapped batter Rajat Patidar, who scored two centuries in two matches against England Lions earlier this month, was already in the squad and could come in for Rahul. If India opt to bolster their batting, especially after pace bowler Mohammad Siraj bowled only 11 overs in Hyderabad, then that would open the door for Sarfaraz to debut. "They could play just one fast bowler, then maybe add an extra batter," former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik told the Test Match Special podcast. "They will look to pack the middle order even more, to give them the confidence to go out there and do what they do." India dominated the first part of the first Test, posting 436 after bowling England out for 246 in the first innings. However, the hosts lost their discipline with the ball and in the field as Ollie Pope made 196 for England in the second innings, expertly executing all manner of sweeps and reverse-sweeps. India were then strangely subdued in a chase of 231. Whereas opener Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone in the first innings, blasting 80 from 76 balls and swiping debutant spinner Tom Hartley's first ball in Test cricket for six, India crawled along in the fourth innings on Sunday afternoon. "This Test they didn't have answers to a few of the questions raised by the English batters," said Karthik, who won 180 caps for India across all three formats. "The reverse-sweep is something that the bowling unit will ponder as to what they can do when a batter reverses. "The India team has always come back from adversity well and they will come out all guns blazing with bat and ball. You will see a different India with different plans." And 38-year-old Karthik, who was part of the last India team to win a Test series in England in 2007, wants the home batters to be more aggressive in the second Test. "I hope they are a lot more attacking," he said. "We saw when Yashasvi took on the spinners, how it looked then, to how different it was in the second innings when they were a bit meek and waiting for things to happen. "They need to be a bit more positive, play a bit of fearless cricket, like England have done really well." On their last tour of India, England won the first Test on a flat pitch in Chennai, only to lose the final three matches on surfaces offering plenty of turn. In Hyderabad, they won on a pitch suited to the spinners and Karthik believes Visakhapatnam could turn even more. "It is a coastal town," he said. "It will be a lot warmer during the day. The pitch will have as much bounce as Hyderabad and I'm pretty sure it will turn as much, if not more. "I'm expecting a game that will again be dominated by spin."

India v England: Jack Leach out of second Test with knee injury..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Visakhapatnam.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3836/production/_132509341_jackleach.jpg Jack Leach was at England training on Wednesday, but did not take part
England spinner Jack Leach is out of the second Test against India in Visakhapatnam on Friday because of an injury to his left knee. Left-armer Leach was hurt in England's superb 28-run win in the first Test and did not train on Wednesday. His absence could lead to a debut for 20-year-old off-spinner Shoaib Bashir. "The knock he took resulted in a haematoma," England captain Ben Stokes said. "Hopefully, it does not keep him out for longer in the series." Following the second match in the five-Test series, there is a nine-day break when the England team will travel to meet their families in Abu Dhabi. Leach sustained the injury while fielding in the first Test in Hyderabad. He was restricted to bowling short spells in the first innings, but was able to bowl 10 overs in the second as England inflicted only a fourth defeat in 47 home Tests on India.

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal: "I had in my mind that I had to play session by session and if they are bowling well that I play that spell and that was how I went about it. "Initially the wicket was a little damp and there was spin and bounce and the ball was seaming a bit but I was thinking about getting through and then converting the loose ball at the moment. "The pitch played differently throughout the day, as the ball got older and older there was spin and bounce. "I would love to double it up and I'll be trying to just keep going and play till the end for my team. I will go and recover properly for tomorrow."

India v England: Yashasvi Jaiswal hundred keeps tourists at bay..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Visakhapatnam.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/23FD/production/_132531290_yashasvijaiswal.jpg Yashasvi Jaiswal went to his second Test hundred by hitting Tom Hartley for sixEngland admirably clung on to India, despite Yashasvi Jaiswal making a sublime century on the opening day of the second Test in Visakhapatnam. Opener Jaiswal batted throughout the day for his unbeaten 179, leading the home side to 336-6. The left-hander's knock prevented India, 1-0 down after losing a thrilling first Test, from completely wasting their advantage of winning the toss and batting first on a good pitch. Jaiswal shared in three separate partnerships in excess of 50, but his team-mates wasted starts. The six men dismissed were all out for between 14 and 34. Shoaib Bashir, the 20-year-old on debut, was the best of England's four spinners and picked up his maiden Test wicket when Rohit Sharma was caught at leg slip. James Anderson, now into his 22nd consecutive year as a Test cricketer, bowled brilliantly as the sole seamer and claimed the wicket of Shubman Gill. Bashir nipped in late in the day for his second, having Axar Patel caught at point, then Rehan Ahmed did the same to KS Bharat to leave England with real hope of limiting India to something manageable.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17772/production/_132541169_gettyimages-1981960128.jpg Zak Crawley top scored with 76 from 78 balls in England's first inningsZak Crawley says India will be wary of another England fightback despite the hosts taking a firm grip after two days of the second Test in Visakhapatnam. India bowled England out for 253 to take a first-innings lead of 143, then stretched their advantage by moving to 28-0 at the close on Saturday. England overcame a deficit of 190 runs to claim victory in the first Test. "We were in a worse position than this last week, so we still believe we can win this game," Crawley told BBC Sport. England's remarkable 28-run win in the first Test in Hyderabad was the first time India had lost a home Test when taking a first-innings lead in excess of 100 runs. It was also the third-largest deficit England had overturned to win a Test. "It's always important to know you are playing against a side that will never give up and can fight back from any situation," added opener Crawley. "That gives us a lot of heart. They will know we have got it in us. It's a mental game - it must play on their minds a little bit, for sure. "Hopefully they believe a little bit we can win it and they have a little bit of doubt in their minds." England took the last four India first-innings wickets for 60 runs on the second morning to bowl the home side out for 396, a total that seemed no more than par on a good pitch. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/03/12/80806439-13041077-image-a-29_1706964876866.jpgThe tourists reached 114-1 in reply, with Crawley making an attractive 76 on his 26th birthday. But Crawley's dismissal, miscuing to point when advancing down the pitch to Axar Patel, was the signal for England to lose six wickets for 68 runs. "I was disappointed to get out when I did," said Kent's Crawley. "I wouldn't have played a different shot, I'd just play it better next time. "At times I felt like we batted well as a group and at times they bowled really well. I didn't see a lot of bad batting on our part. It's just the way it goes. "They played really well and they are allowed to do that, but so are we tomorrow and over the next couple of days. We still massively believe we can win the game - we proved that last week. It's their day, but we're still in it." England were ripped apart by a devastating spell of reverse-swing bowling from Jasprit Bumrah. The pace bowler claimed 6-45, including an astonishing yorker that took out the middle and leg stumps of Ollie Pope. "He's an unbelievable bowler, especially in these conditions," said Crawley. "When the ball is reversing like that, he's fantastic. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say 'well played'. He bowled brilliantly. "We have to find a way to counteract him. It's about coming up with a gameplan and sticking to it. We'll come up with some gameplans to counteract it and hopefully we'll be sweet." For Bumrah, a destruction of the England batting left the 30-year-old with his best figures in a home Test. "I am very happy but I try not to look at numbers. I don't want to put more pressure on myself and think about milestones," he told TNT Sports. "If you want to take wickets as a fast bowler in India you have got to learn to use reverse swing, because the new ball doesn't always do much for you. "I grew up watching legendary bowlers using it to bowl magical deliveries and it really inspired me. It is something that I practiced a lot, learning to set up the batters and making it a strength of mine."

Lunch - Ind 130-4 Lead by 273A very entertaining morning. England started brilliantly, India fought back through Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, but two wickets late in the session gives Ben Stokes' side a boost going into the break. India's lead is looking quite ominous already, despite the wickets, but they will still want quite a lot more because as we know, England will try and chase anything.

England's James Anderson talking to TNT Sports, about them not being out of the game: "Yeah, absolutely. We feel well in the game. We got sat down by the coach last night and he said if India get 600 ahead we're going to try and chase it down, that is exactly what we're going to do. I thought we stuck to our task really well today. They put on a partnership at one point but I thought the way the spinners kept going and kept toiling was brilliant. We're in a great position and we're going to give it a good crack tomorrow." On being a senior player and delivering this morning: "For me, you know out here that as a seamer you've got a limited chance to bowl, it is going to be a lot of load for the spinners, so I just focus on being in the right spot every ball and trying to bowl my best ball every ball. Sometimes it comes off and sometimes it doesn't. Fortunately today I managed to get a couple early on, set us off well and that allowed the spinners to do their thing from the other end." More from James Anderson on TNT Sports, on the key to his longevity: "I'm not sure there's a key to it. I'm lucky that my body can cope with the stresses of Test cricket. I've not had any operations in my career which is huge and I look after myself pretty well. All of those things together have allowed me to play for this long and I still love playing the game so I think that hunger helps. That comes from various places. I've always loved playing cricket from a young age and I am loving playing in this dressing room at the moment. That keeps me going a little bit more. I love this group of blokes, the captain and coach have got a great thing going at the moment and it's fun to be a part of. For me it is just something I want to try and do for as long as possible." On whether the break after this Test mean more hunger to chase tomorrow: "It's nice that we've got a little bit of a break because out here with conditions, heat and the work for the bowlers it does take its toll so to have a little break and a rest is good and rest the mind. Either way we'd be coming out here tomorrow and swinging and trying to get the runs as quickly as possible. We've seen Rehan Ahmed tonight - on the tannoy it said 'nightwatchman' and we were like 'no he's not'. We saw that in the last over. He's walking off after bowling 20 overs and saying 'I want to put my pads on skipper' and that's just amazing confidence."

Report By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Visakhapatnam.England's series with India is level at 1-1 after a target of 399 to win the second Test proved to be well beyond the tourists in Visakhapatnam. Looking to complete a chase that would have broken a host of records, England were bowled out for 292 to lose by 106 runs on an anti-climactic fourth day. England made a strong start and reached 95-1, but the promoted Rehan Ahmed was trapped leg before by Axar Patel to signal a regular fall of wickets. Opener Zak Crawley looked to be England's main hope, batting with grace for his 73. When he was given lbw to Kuldeep Yadav on review, the game slipped away. Slim hope remained in the shape of Ben Stokes, only for the captain to be run out in wasteful fashion by a direct hit from Shreyas Iyer. At that point, with 179 required and only three wickets remaining, India could breathe easily. Ben Foakes and Tom Hartley delayed India with a stand of 56, Hartley surviving two reviews that would have given Ravichandran Ashwin his 500th Test wicket. Jasprit Bumrah was summoned and pouched a return catch off Foakes and when Shoaib Bashir was caught behind off Mukesh Kumar, Ashwin was given another shot at the milestone. But Bumrah uprooted Hartley's off stump to end with three in the innings and nine in the match, leaving Ashwin on 499 wickets going into the third Test in Rajkot on 15th February.

Virat Kohli: India batter to miss rest of England Test series..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3DC3/production/_132611851_gettyimages-1472909629.jpg Kohli has played 113 Tests for India, scoring almost 9,000 runsIndia batter Virat Kohli will miss the rest of the Test series against England for personal reasons. The 35-year-old ex-captain previously withdrew from the first two Tests. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Saturday that Kohli also will be absent from the remaining three Tests. "Virat Kohli will remain unavailable for selection for the remainder of the series due to personal reasons," the BCCI announced in a statement. "The board fully respects and supports Mr Kohli's decision." When missing the the first two Tests, the board had said "certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention". Kohli, who has played 113 Tests for India, is fourth on their list of all-time leading run-scorers with 8,848. The series is level at 1-1 with three games to play, starting with the third Test in Rajkot on Thursday 15th February. Kohli, who led the side in 68 Tests between 2014 and 2022, had not missed a Test for India for more than two years, last doing so when he was ruled out of a match against South Africa in Johannesburg with a back spasm in January 2022. India won the second Test by 106 runs in Visakhapatnam on Monday to level the series. Batter Shreyas Iyer, who played in the first two Tests, also did not feature in the 17-man squad named for the remainder of the series. Spinner Ravindra Jadeja and batter KL Rahul, who both played in the first Test, have returned to the squad but will only play "subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI medical team", the board added. There is also a call-up for uncapped seamer Akash Deep. India squad for remaining Tests:
Rohit Sharma (capt), Jasprit Bumrah, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul (wk), Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (wk), KS Bharat (wk). Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

Jack Leach: England spinner ruled out of remainder of Test series with India through injury..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CCED/production/_132616425_gettyimages-1977259489.jpg Jack Leach (left) injured his knee while fielding during the first Test in IndiaEngland spinner Jack Leach has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test tour of India with a knee problem. Leach suffered an injury to his left knee while fielding in England's win in the first Test in Hyderabad. The 32-year-old, who has taken 126 wickets in 36 Tests, subsequently missed the second Test in Vizag. He will now fly home and England currently have no plans to call up a replacement for Leach with the third Test in Rajkot starting on Thursday. England will instead keep faith with inexperienced spin trio Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir, plus Joe Root as a fourth spin option, for the remainder of the five-match series. Left-arm spinner Leach had only just returned to the side having missed last summer's Ashes series against Australia with a stress fracture in his back. The Somerset player has endured a series of health and injury issues which have hampered his England career since he made his debut in April 2018. The series is level at 1-1 with three games to play.

Rahul also missed the second Test in Visakhapatnam with a thigh issue, which India won to level the series 1-1. It is yet to be confirmed whether all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will return to the XI after a hamstring injury. Devdutt Padikkal replaces Rahul in an already depleted India squad, with star batter Virat Kohli confirmed to miss the remainder of the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added that Rahul "has reached 90% match fitness" and is expected to return for the fourth and fifth Tests. The third Test starts in Rajkot on Thursday 15th February. Middle order batter Shreyas Iyer was also not named in the squad for the remaining three Tests, leaving a relatively inexperienced batting line-up if Jadeja is ruled unfit. India squad for third Test: Rohit Sharma (capt), Jasprit Bumrah, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel (wk).. KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep.

India v England: Michael Vaughan says tourists will rue missed chances..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Rajkot.England will rue the chances missed on day one of the third Test in India, says former captain Michael Vaughan. Joe Root dropped Rohit Sharma on 27, with the home captain going on to make a century in Rajkot. Both Rohit and Ravindra Jadeja, who reached 110 not out, could have been lbw, but England opted not to review as India moved to 326-5. "England will be happy with the effort but will also be thinking they could have bowled India out," said Vaughan. England reduced India to 33-3, which could have been 47-4 when slip fielder Root was slow to move to his left and missed Rohit's edge off Tom Hartley. When Rohit was on 87 he was hit on the pad attempting a sweep at leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed and captain Ben Stokes decided not to review. Replays showed the ball would have hit the stumps, though there was a question over whether Rohit hit the ball. Jadeja would have been in trouble on 93 when he defended Hartley with his bat and pad together, with England again opting against the referral. "England will know it was a day of missed chances," Vaughan, who led England in 51 of his 82 Tests, told the Test Match Special podcast. "India are on top." It is not the first time England have had trouble with reviews in this series. In the first Test in Hyderabad, which the tourists won by 28 runs, England burned through all three reviews in the first 14 overs of India's first innings. Some teams employ a system for reviews in the field, for example having a requirement for bowler, captain and wicketkeeper to all agree. However, England do not use such a structure. "We don't generally have too much structure, this team," said assistant coach Paul Collingwood. "We have some very experienced cricketers out on the park. It can be frustrating at times, but you have to crack on and try to create more chances." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/0767/production/_132659810_joerootdropsrohitsharma.jpgFormer all-rounder Paul Collingwood said England's day was "good, but not exceptional"."On another day we could have had six or seven wickets," he told BBC Sport. "It was quite a lot cooler in the first session this morning, there was some dampness around. Hopefully tomorrow we can exploit that and get some movement to finish the tail off. It will be hard work. "We know how our batters will go about it. We'll look to put their bowlers under pressure."

The opener crashed his third Test hundred from only 88 balls in a swashbuckling assault on the India bowling in the evening sun. Duckett added 84 from 80 balls with Zak Crawley for the first wicket then another 93 off 102 with Ollie Pope. He was unbeaten on 133 from 118 balls at the close, with 21 fours and two sixes. Duckett had taken England to 207-2 from only 35 overs, 238 behind India's 445. India spinner Ravinchandran Ashwin: "I would like to dedicate my 500th wicket to my father. He has been there through thick and thin. "The game is neck and neck. They are putting us under pressure but it is important not to react to that pressure." Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "One of the incredible days of Test cricket. Ben Duckett's was a special innings and up there with Ollie Pope's in the first Test. "If England bat the full day tomorrow they have a great chance." BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew: "A remarkable innings from Ben Duckett, he has wrestled every bit of initiative India had. "What a day but England still have more batting to do."

Ravichandran Ashwin: India spinner out of third Test against England because of family emergency..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer in Rajkot. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0273/production/_132672600_gettyimages-2015164114.jpg Ashwin took his landmark 500th Test wicket on Friday, with England's Crawley caught after top-edging a sweep
India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has pulled out of the third Test against England in Rajkot because of a family emergency. On Friday's second day, the 37-year-old became only the ninth man to reach 500 Test wickets. "The health and wellbeing of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance," said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). "The BCCI extends heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family." Rajiv Shukla, vice-president of the BCCI, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that Ashwin had to "rush and leave Rajkot Test to Chennai to be with his mother". After two days, England are 207-2 in their first innings, 238 behind India's 445. On Friday, Ashwin made 37 with the bat, then had England opener Zak Crawley caught off a top-edged sweep to reach the milestone of 500 wickets. He is the second Indian to achieve the landmark and fifth spin bowler. Ashwin was also the batter in question when India were penalised five penalty runs for running on the pitch. If he does not return to the Test, India will not be allowed to replace his batting or bowling, but will be permitted a substitute fielder. "In these challenging times, the BCCI and the team fully supports Ashwin," said the BCCI statement. "The board and the team will continue to provide any necessary assistance to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to offer support as needed. Team India appreciates the understanding and empathy of the fans and media during this sensitive period." The five-match series is currently level at 1-1. India are already without star batter Virat Kohli, after he withdrew from the series for personal reasons.
