Roy Hodgson has named Wayne Rooney as the new England Captain.
Not sure who the alternatives to Rooney were, but I can't really see him as Captain material.

Fairly obvious choice really, if someone like Van Gaal sees him as captain material, then he must have something about him behind the scenes that we don't see in the media.

It's true that both Louis van Gaal and Roy Hodgson have made Wayne Rooney captain in the past few days, but for the life of me I fail to see why. Obviously Rooney has some sort of hidden talent, which the two managers are hoping to bring out. Then again perhaps he's the best of an average bunch? But as far as England are concerned, I'd be more than happy to be proved wrong. But one thing is undeniable, and that is he is most certainly following some very illustrious players that have held the England and MUFC captaincy over the years, and I hope that he performs his duties with some old fashioned charm and good manners off the pitch, and does nothing to bring the name of his team into disrepute whilst on it. With all due respect to the player, it's a big ask.

If it was just Hodgson that made him captain, then I'd be inclined to think he was just trying to appease a 'big name' but Van Gaal doesn't come across as someone who'd entertain that idea, especially when overlooking his captain from his national side. Good luck Hodgson, hope it's the right decision.

Can't be any worse than the previous captain.
A dude who didn't even see us past the 1/4's & failed miserably at most major comp's, yet gets placed in the 'legend' bracket alongside Moore, Hurst and the '66 heroes. Criminal.
Clearly Rooney is the stand out choice of the current crop. Will be interesting to see if this helps him raise his game & become a consistent international performer.
