Sin-bin: Annabelle Codey (Australia) - England 14-0 Australia The Australia second row goes to the sin-bin for 10 minutes for a high tackle but, as the referee says, she was static in the tackle which gives her mitigation and lessens the degree of danger, so it's not a red. Converted try: England 21-0 Australia - Marlie Packer (con Holly Aitchison)

Red card: Annabelle Codey (Australia) - England 42-7 Australia - A second yellow means red. Codey was sin-binned in the first half and she's very upright in the tackle on Ella Wyrwas as she passed for the try. The referee says it is worthy of a second yellow and she will watch the remainder of the game from the sidelines. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/20/a420b0e2-6e50-4415-8ab0-9c1f8020949e.jpgThere's a little bit of pushing and shoving all of a sudden - Work for referee Lauren Jenner to do to calm things down.
77 mins - England 42-7 Australia
England knew they were going to win this a long time ago and Australia are battling gamely to score a second consolation try. They're close to the line again after and England knock-on. WXV1: England 42-7 Australia - Red Roses make winning start in Wellington..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6098/production/_131482742_scrum_getty.jpg England's remaining WXV fixtures are against Canada and world champions New ZealandEngland beat Australia 42-7 to make a winning start to WXV1, the new global tournament in women's rugby. The Red Roses, currently top of the world rankings, secured a bonus point before half-time in Wellington. Hannah Botterman, Ella Wyrwas, captain Marlie Packer and Jess Breach all crossed in the first 40 minutes. Packer and Megan Jones added further scores for England, while Ashley Marsters replied for Australia, who had Annabelle Codey sent off. Second row Codey, who had been sin-binned in the first half for making shoulder contact with Packer's head, was shown a red card for the same offence against Wyrwas in the build-up to Jones' try. Player of the match, England's Holly Aitchison, speaking to ITV: “It was the first game so we wanted to make a good start and we’re really pleased with that. "Ella (Wyrwas) is a great player and it was a natural progression from club to the international stage for us. "After the World Cup it’s good to be back out here on New Zealand soil. "We were really happy with the first half but our momentum stalled in the second so that’ll be something we can focus on next week.”

WXV2: Scotland lifting inaugural trophy 'just the beginning' - captain Rachel Malcolm
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1348A/production/_131568987_malcolm2.jpg Rachel Malcolm and head coach Bryan Easson are delighted to lift the WXV2 trophyCaptain Rachel Malcolm says winning the inaugural WXV2 has just "scratched the surface" of what Scotland's national women's rugby union team is capable. The Scots edged out Italy on points difference to top the new worldwide competition's second tier and have now won their past six games. "We believed this was coming, but we also believe that this is just the beginning," Malcolm told BBC Scotland. "There's so much more to come from this group." Having beaten Japan in their final game of three in South Africa, Bryan Easson's squad had a nervous wait before Italy fell just short of the required winning margin in Sunday's game against United States. "Incredibly happy - ecstatic," was Malcolm's reaction. "We had to watch it - it was a very long 80 minutes, a tough watch. "Italy are a class outfit and they performed incredibly well against USA and it was so, so tight and it obviously came down to very fine margins in the end. I guess luck was on our side big time and we had done just enough." Malcolm said that the Scots always felt "it's our time". "We came here with the goal of winning the tournament but also creating incredible memories both on and off the pitch and we've absolutely done that," the Loughborough Lightning flanker said. "Everything seemed to align. It's the first time we've won a trophy since 2001. It is also the first time we've beaten the USA since 2001 and it's also the first time we've won six games on the trot since 2001." The Scots' winning run - they also defeated the hosts in South Africa - is in stark contrast to their previous results. "Within those 12 defeats, there was so much potential," Malcolm said. "We don't always get the belief of others external to this group and we don't always get the support of others external to this group, but we stuck to it and really didn't listen to some of the people who might have doubted us along the way. "Particularly after the World Cup last year, we took a really tough look at ourselves, both as a management team and a player group, and I think the growth that you've seen has not just happened overnight." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/E66A/production/_131568985_malcolm.jpgMalcolm said the Scots are not dwelling on the fact there is no promotion available from WXV2 until 2026. "It hasn't crossed our minds at this minute," she said. "Getting our hands on the trophy was all we had our sights set on. We weren't thinking about what's next." However, Malcolm thinks it is "incredibly exciting" looking forward to next year's Six Nations. "This is not the pinnacle for us," she insisted. "It is the crest of the wave and we want to keep pushing on and this season's Six Nations has big implications in terms of World Cup qualification. "We couldn't be in a better place in terms of competing in this season's Six Nations."

WXV3: Ireland edge out Spain in tight encounter to claim inaugural title win in third-tier of new competition
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/20AD/production/_131556380_gettyimages-1761614157.jpg Ireland came out on top in what was a tight contest in DubaiIreland staged an impressive second-half fightback to edge out Spain in a fiercely-contested encounter and claim the inaugural WXV3 title. Tries from Grace Moore and Neve Jones, both from a rolling maul, meant the Irish came back from 13-3 down at the break to win 15-13 in Dubai. Claudia Pena scored an early try for Spain, who could have won the title themselves with a victory. Both sides went into the game having won their first two matches. Ireland's win means they can no longer be caught having taken 14 points from three WXV games, three more than second-placed Fiji and four more than Spain, who dropped to third. Having gone into the tournament without a win for a year and under the guidance of new head coach Scott Bemand, the Irish hammered Kazakhstan and then Colombia in their opening two games. Against a determined Spanish side on Saturday, they had to overcome being temporarily reduced to 14 players twice, with Edel McMahon yellow-carded at the start of the first half and Linda Djoug shown a yellow in first-half injury time. Indeed, they were never ahead in a tight contest until Jones crossed for their second try with eight minutes remaining to give them a two-point margin that Spain could not retrieve. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1332/production/_131541940_gettyimages-1761614155.jpgTheir second-half fightback began on the hour-mark when flanker Moore bundled her way over at the back of an excellent rolling maul for her third international try, with Dannah O'Brien adding the conversion to bring Ireland to within three points of Spain. A brave decision by Ireland to kick for touch rather than go for three points on 68 minutes, when a draw would have been enough to win them the title, proved to be crucial. It did not lead directly to a score but it did set up a four-minute period of possession that finished with Jones capitalising on another fine maul to score her team's second try which put them 15-13 up and sealed the title.

WXV1: Australia 25-19 Wales..By Ceri Coleman-Phillips..BBC Sport Wales at Go Media Mount Smart Stadium in AucklandWasteful Wales ended their debut WXV campaign winless after failing to beat 14-player Australia in Auckland. The Wallaroos played almost the entire second half without Siokapesi Palu who was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle, but they still managed to run in three tries. Kelsey Jones' late score ensured a dramatic finish, but Wales were once again left to rue missed chances. They finish a largely disappointing tournament bottom of the table. Australia meanwhile can celebrate two wins over Six Nations teams having beaten France last weekend. Wales went into this game have never beaten Australia in five previous meetings, while also seeking to avenge last year's Rugby World Cup defeat. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/170FC/production/_131606449_gettyimages-1772132886.jpgJasmine Joyce went for a head injury assessment after Siokapesi Palu's dangerous tackle

WXV: World Rugby director says competition's crowds 'need to and will grow'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BC34/production/_131608184_gettyimages-1759147742.jpg England sit top of the WXV1 standings with one game to go
WXV crowds "need to and will grow", says World Rugby's director of women's rugby Sally Horrox. The WXV is a new annual three-tier global tournament which launched in October. Sparse crowds have been highlighted with England captain Marlie Packer calling the supporter turnout "disappointing". "There is a degree of introducing the competition to the public," Horrox told BBC Sport. "I have every confidence there, I can see the appetite is there. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/17B9C/production/_131608179_gettyimages-1759241774.jpg"The fan base needs to grow - it will grow, it will evolve in time. This is is the first time this competition has come to town." The three tiers of competition are being held in three different locations with WVX1 in New Zealand, WXV2 in South Africa and WXV3 in Dubai. Horrox added WXV1 has seen 8,000-10,000 supporters over a weekend. Three games are played across a single weekend during the three-week competition. She added: "As we evolve the competition, [we will have] more certainty, more long term planning so people know more about it and [will have] more advanced notice." All three tiers of the inaugural WXV started while the men's Rugby World Cup was being played, with WXV2 and WXV3 both finishing on the same day as the men's final. Horrox said it "wasn't possible" this time to move the competition to avoid clashing with the men's game but in future they will not be played at the same time. "It will be in the global window but we will not put it up against a men's Rugby World Cup in the future," she said. WXV1 will conclude on Saturday with France taking on Canada at 3am and England facing New Zealand at 6pm.

World Rugby awards: England's Marlie Packer and Abby Dow nominated for women's player of the year..

France centre Gabrielle Vernier and New Zealand captain Ruahei Demant make up the four-player shortlist. Both Packer and Dow played influential roles in helping England secure a fifth Six Nations title in a row in April. Fly-half Demant won the award in 2022, after helping the Black Ferns win the World Cup, and is bidding to become the first woman to win the award twice. The winner will be announced on Saturday following the conclusion of the WXV1 final match between New Zealand and England in Auckland, which kicks off at 06:00 BST. Women's breakthrough player of the year and try of the year will also be announced on Saturday. Scotland's Francesca McGhie is among the nominees for the former after making her international debut against England in this year's Six Nations. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/02F7/production/_131595700_-27971c7a-2d46-40e5-80d5-be6c7b3cd062.pngPacker, 34, took over as England skipper from Sarah Hunter following her retirement after England's opening Six Nations match against Scotland. The 34-year-old went on to lead her team to the Grand Slam in April with a 38-33 victory over France in front of a record women's crowd of 58,498 at Twickenham. Dow, who scored the opener against France, has scored six tries in 2023, including four against Italy in the Six Nations. Both players will start against New Zealand in Auckland in England's final WXV1 match, where victory would secure the inaugural title. Vernier, 26, scored five tries in this year's Six Nations and was named player of the championship before helping France to an opening victory over the Black Ferns at WXV1. On Sunday, New Zealand number eight Ardie Savea was named the winner of the men's award.

WXV1: England 33-12 New Zealand - Red Roses avenge World Cup final loss to clinch inaugural title..By Phil Cartwright, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0A65/production/_131616620_englandtrophy_getty.jpg Wins over Australia, Canada and New Zealand confirmed England as the first winners of WXV1England became the inaugural WXV1 champions with a 33-12 win over world champions New Zealand in Auckland. The Red Roses capitalised on a fine start against the Black Ferns to end as the WXV top tier's only unbeaten team. Facing the side that beat them in last year's World Cup final, England started quickly with tries from Alex Matthews, Lark Atkin-Davies and Sarah Bern. Kennedy Simon and Katelyn Vahaakolo replied, before Morwenna Talling and Zoe Aldcroft put England beyond reach. As well as confirming them as the first winners of women's rugby's new global tournament, England's victory also ensured they will stay ahead of New Zealand at the top of the world rankings. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/14F01/production/_131616758_englandtrophy2_getty.jpgEngland captain Marlie Packer: "In every game this tournament we grew as a group and I'm super proud of that performance. "Beating New Zealand in their own back yard, there's no better feeling. They put on a fantastic game for us, they didn't stop right until the end so full credit to them." England interim head coach Louis Deacon: "I'm massively proud, they were absolutely outstanding, they executed our plan really well. They're a new group but they've grown as the competition's gone on and they were outstanding today. "There's still a long way to go, which is really exciting. We're only at the beginning of the journey, John Mitchell has got a few things that he wants to put in place and we're only going to improve from here."

Marlie Packer: England captain wins World Rugby Women's Player of Year award for 2023..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DDB9/production/_131616765_packer_getty.jpg Marlie Packer led England to victory in the inaugural WXV1 competition on SaturdayEngland's WXV-winning captain Marlie Packer has been named World Rugby Women's Player of the Year for 2023. Packer claimed the award ahead of team-mate Abby Dow, France centre Gabrielle Vernier and New Zealand fly-half Ruahei Demant, who won the prize in 2022. The Saracens back row, 34, led England to a Six Nations Grand Slam in April. That was followed by the inaugural WXV1 title, which was secured with a 33-12 victory over world champions New Zealand in Auckland on Saturday. Packer, who won her 99th England cap in that match, is one of seven England players named in World Rugby's Dream Team. She is joined by fellow forwards Lark Atkin-Davies, Sarah Bern, Zoe Aldcroft and Alex Matthews, with full-back Ellie Kildunne and winger Dow also included. New Zealand's Katelyn Vahaakolo was named Breakthrough Player of the Year, an award for which Scotland winger Francesca McGhie was also nominated. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/10/21/21/63728311-0-image-a-133_1666383103830.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/4179/production/_131616761_packer_wr.jpg
