Since unable to support Rovers at the present time, I meant to take a greater interest in the cricket club, especially after their County Campionship relegation, assuming that meant a push for promotion could be anticipated. Outside of Bristol, coverage of how quite the opposite fortune followed has escaped me. Just what on earth is going on at GCCC? In the championship's second division, we've won none, lost six, and drawn eight?!

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/133A6/production/_132585787_shutterstock_editorial_14063735z.jpg Beau Webster starred with bat and ball for Essex in the One Day Cup last seasonGloucestershire have signed Australian all-rounder Beau Webster as an overseas player for the 2024 season. A right-handed batter who bowls both right-arm medium pace and off-spin, Webster is eligible for the T20 Blast. The 30-year-old will also be available for Gloucestershire's County Championship fixtures against Yorkshire and Glamorgan in June. Webster, from Hobart, Tasmania, played eight matches for Essex in the One-Day Cup last season. He was among the top 10 best-performing bowlers in the competition with 14 wickets at an economy rate of 5.47. With the bat, he scored 280 runs at an average of 37.14. "I am really excited and very grateful for the opportunity to join Gloucestershire for the 2024 Vitality Blast campaign," Webster said. "I'm looking forward to not only developing my game further in the UK but also to playing a part in helping the team win matches during my time here. I can't wait to meet my teammates and get started." Webster started his career in 2014 at Tasmania, where he stills plays. This season he has scored 554 runs at an average of 61.55 in the Sheffield Shield, second only to Cameron Bancroft in the run-scoring charts. The 6ft 6in all-rounder also has 13 wickets from seven appearances in Australia's first-class competition. In the Marsh Cup 50-over competition, Webster has 247 runs from five matches at an average of 49.40 and also five wickets to his name. Alongside his exploits for Tasmania, Webster also impressed in the recent Big Bash League with Melbourne Stars, scoring 262 runs at an average of 43.66. Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne said: "Beau is an incredibly well-rounded player who is experienced across all formats and offers a great option with both the bat and the ball. "Beau is a tall, powerful player who can have a terrific impact on a game, and I'm really excited to have Beau join us for the Vitality Blast and to see him help win cricket matches for Gloucestershire."

Cameron Bancroft: Australia international batter rejoins Gloucestershire..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FA7B/production/_132532146_bancroft_v2_020224_rex.jpg Cameron Bancroft played for Somerset last yearAustralia top-order batter Cameron Bancroft has re-signed for Gloucestershire for the 2024 season. The 31-year-old has scored 446 runs in 10 Tests for his country and has played in two Ashes series. Bancroft is the top scorer in the Sheffield Shield, Australia's domestic competition, this winter with 512 runs in six matches. He will be available to play across all formats for Gloucestershire, following previous spells in 2016 and 2017. The deal was announced 24 hours after former captain Mark Alleyne was named as the club's new head coach. "I'm absolutely delighted to sign with Gloucestershire and to have the chance to return to the club where I started my county career," said Bancroft, who has alos played for Durham and had a short spell with Somerset last year. "I love playing county cricket and the opportunity to play all formats with the club is something I'm really excited about. "With a new coach and a really talented playing group I'm looking forward to the season ahead." Bancroft has scored 9,449 runs in 146 first-class matches, including 25 centuries, but served a nine-month ban from international and domestic cricket in 2018 for his part in ball tampering against South Africa before returning to play in the following year's Ashes series.

Mark Alleyne: Gloucestershire appoint former all-rounder as head coach for second spell..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F638/production/_132523036_gettyimages-1367399700.jpg Mark Alleyne's most recent spell at Gloucestershire was as assistant coach in 2021Club legend Mark Alleyne has returned to Gloucestershire as head coach on a three-year-deal. The 55-year-old featured in nearly 800 matches for the club during a 19-year playing career and previously coached Shire from 2005 to 2007. Alleyne was Glamorgan's white-ball coach last season and also coached the England Twenty20 side on their 2022 tour of the West Indies. "I'm feeling truly blessed to be given the opportunity," he said. Alleyne is Gloucestershire's most decorated player with nine trophies and a County Championship promotion to his name and he also won 10 one-day international caps for England. "Gloucestershire is a county I have many happy memories of from my playing days," Alleyne added. "I have gained lots of experience, and I'm hoping the skills I've picked up along the way will allow me to have a positive impact on the team. "I know a lot of the players already. There is a really exciting blend of youth and experience at Gloucestershire and that's why when the opportunity came up, I didn't give it a second thought." The all-rounder scored 14,214 runs and took 407 wickets across 314 first-class matches for Gloucestershire as well as hitting 7,825 runs and claiming 393 wickets in 413 List A [limited-overs] appearances. Both remain club records in List-A cricket and there is even a mural of Alleyne at Gloucestershire's Seat Unique Stadium. "It is absolutely fantastic to welcome Mark back to the club," said Shire chief executive officer Will Brown. "He has a long and glittering history of winning trophies here at Gloucestershire and is just as hungry for success now as a coach as he was during his playing days." Captain Graeme van Buuren added: "Mark's knowledge of the game is amazing and he's achieved great things here as a player, so all of us are really excited to begin working with him. "One thing Mark knows how to do is win and I'm sure the lessons he has learned over the years will be invaluable to us."

David Payne: Bowler signs new three-year contract with Gloucestershire..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/177A8/production/_131286169_shutterstock_editorial_13938359cz.jpg Payne has spent the last 14 years at Gloucestershire having started in their academyPace bowler David Payne has signed a new three-year contract to stay with Gloucestershire until the end of 2026. The 32-year-old's deal will see him play only white-ball cricket from 2024. Payne, who came through the club's academy, is to focus on the limited-overs format to "manage his load in the interest of career longevity". "I've found red-ball loads and the impact the format has on my body very challenging over the past two seasons," Payne said. "I am still leaving myself available to play red-ball cricket at some point in the future in the hope I can get my body to a place that can cope with the strain red-ball cricket has on the body." Payne signed his first professional deal with Gloucestershire in 2009 and is the club's longest-serving player. In his 14-year career has made 307 appearances across all formats of the game, taking 601 wickets. In T20 cricket he is the club's leading wicket taker with 160.

Gloucestershire explore move from County Ground to new site on edge of Bristol..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/63A9/production/_131931552_shutterstock_editorial_13959786b.jpg Gloucestershire have been based at the site on Nevil Road, Bristol, since 1889Gloucestershire are exploring options to relocate from their historic Bristol County Ground to a new site on the edge of the city. The club have played at the ground in Ashley Down, Bristol, for more than a century with the first match held on Nevil Road in 1889. Gloucestershire said the move would "ensure the competitiveness and long-term sustainability" of the club. The preferred site is in South Gloucestershire, close to the M4. "This is a significant turning point for cricket in Gloucestershire and Bristol as we look to secure the club's long-term future in an ever-changing sporting world," club chairman David Jones said. "As well as delivering for our members the modern and low-carbon facilities they deserve in order to showcase an ever-wider range of world class events here in the South West, we are keen to continue our active role in the community to widen participation and inspire the next generation of sports women and men." Gloucestershire have cited the lack of growth potential and "strain on infrastructure and facilities" as the reason to move away from the Seat Unique Stadium - as it is known for sponsorship reasons. A new purpose-built ground would allow the club to host bigger international cricket fixtures and also afford the opportunity to be part of white-ball franchise tournaments, their statement continued, such as the Hundred. Restrictions around the current site limit Gloucestershire's ability to host events outside the regular summer cricket season. Gloucestershire were relegated to County Championship Division Two in 2022 and finished bottom of the table this season. In the club's most recent accounts to the year ending January 2023, Gloucestershire recorded £570,000 losses compared with £92,000 profit the previous year. Gloucestershire's founder is legendary amateur WG Grace, who helped acquire the Nevil Road site in 1879. The first ever County Championship match was played at the ground in 1890, between Gloucestershire and Yorkshire. Richard Gould, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) added: "It's fantastic to see Gloucestershire displaying the ambition to provide cricket fans in the West Country with a state-of-the-art sports and leisure arena."

Jack Taylor: Gloucestershire all-rounder signs new deal until 2026..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12A16/production/_132101367_13c57e76-2728-445f-a931-72a8657058e2.jpg Jack Taylor has scored 7,539 career runsVeteran Gloucestershire all-rounder Jack Taylor has signed a contract extension at the club. The 32-year-old - brother of seamer and team-mate Matt Taylor - made his debut for the Shire in 2010 and has made 294 appearances across all formats. His new deal runs until the end of the 2026 season. Taylor told the club website: "My deep-rooted connection to this club fuels my ambition for success and I'm committed to help bring silverware back home." The leg-spinner and middle-order batter was man of the match in Gloucestershire's 2015 One-Day Cup final win over Surrey at Lord's, cracking 35 off 26 balls and taking 4-43 with the ball. Taylor said: "I am thrilled to stay with the club for the next three seasons. While our victory in 2015 was an unforgettable moment for me, it has been far too long since then." The Gloucestershire academy product smashed a 52-ball century in August as his side beat Sussex in the 50-over competition, setting a club record for the fastest List A hundred. Taylor has scored seven centuries across 91 first-class games, with 126 T20 appearances and 77 more in List A cricket. Will Brown, Gloucestershire's chief executive, said: "Jack is a model professional and is someone a lot of the younger members of the squad really look up to, so I'm delighted to see him commit his future to Gloucestershire."

Zaman Akhter: Gloucestershire agree one-year extension..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/116DF/production/_131719317_gettyimages-1491249056.jpg Zaman Akhter was scouted by Gloucestershire while playing for the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA)Gloucestershire have handed a one-year extension to seamer Zaman Akhter. The right arm fast bowler signed his first professional contract in March ahead of the 2023 season. Zaman made his debut against Durham in the County Championship in May and went on to claim 19 first-class wickets. "Zaman was an important player for us last season and gave us a much-needed extra pace option across all formats," Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, Dale Benkenstein, said. The 24-year-old joined Gloucestershire after he was spotted by a scout while playing for the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA). "It's been great to see Zaman develop as the season progressed and I've no doubt in his ability to continue to improve as we move into the 2024 season and beyond," Benkenstein told the club website. In September, the seamer claimed his best bowling in an innings as he returned 4/33 at Leicestershire. He also recorded his top score of 41* in that match. "I'm really excited to sign an extension with the club," Zaman told the club website. "My first year gave me a proper taste of professional cricket and I loved every minute. "I've got some things I want to work on over the winter for next season which will hopefully help to bring about success for the team on the field."

Graeme van Buuren: Gloucestershire's red-ball captain signs contract extension to 2026..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AC1D/production/_133116044_shutterstock_editorial_12929287br.jpg Graeme van Buuren has scored more than 4,000 runs for Gloucestershire across all formatsGloucestershire skipper Graeme van Buuren has signed a contract extension with the club until 2026. The 33-year-old has just entered his ninth season with the county and his third captaining the red-ball team. Van Buuren has scored 4,117 runs in 140 matches across all formats for the club, hitting seven centuries, and has taken 91 wickets. "It's an amazing feeling to be extending my time with Gloucestershire," he told the club's website. "My family and I love being in Bristol and are really happy that Gloucestershire will continue to be our home." Van Buuren began his career playing for Northerns and Titans in South Africa before moving to Bristol in 2016 and has also represented Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred. He was named captain of the red-ball side in 2022 and could pass 3,000 first-class runs for the club when Yorkshire visit the Seat Unique Stadium on Friday. Their County Championship Division Two season opener against Derbyshire was abandoned due to bad weather, with no play possible across the scheduled four days.

But you have now. Thumping Northamptonshire. Playing well with several players in form. And the second division isn’t that good so get a few more wins before the mid season break and they could be in a good position leading into August and September.

Yes, things seem to be improving at long last. Gloucestershire have invested a lot of time in a young batting unit, and it is paying off. I have always felt that the batters have not been consistently putting up big scores, especially in the first innings. A typical Gloucestershire first innings score has seldom passed 300 in recent years, and too often, individual players have got to 30/40, but never converted these scores into centuries, and given it away. In previous seasons, Dent has always seemed to me to be the most likely to convert to a big score, but has picked up injuries in the last few seasons, and has lost his form. Four batters have scored centuries this season so far, with everybody contributing at some stage.Hammond particularly impressing, and Charlesworth progressing very well. Hopefully, a century for him, is just around the corner. Bancroft has started the season very well, and has been a very good replacement for Marcus Harris, who I was sorry to see leave the club at the end of last season. Ollie Price must be one of the most impressive young batters in the country, and Bracey has recovered his form after a couple of disappointing seasons in the four day game. We also have a useful pace attack these days, with options, providing injuries don’t cause problems. In addition, Zafar Gohar is a very handy spinner, and has scored plenty of valuable runs down the order. If the weather stays dry, and we can pick up wins in the next two matches against Leicestershire and Derbyshire, pushing for the top spot could be a realistic aim by September. Yorkshire will be favoured to go up, but will lose Root and Brook to England for most of the season, which won’t help them Watching the stream at the moment from Leicester,Gloucestershire 169-0, so another big score looking likely!

'We've worked so hard' to get win - Van Buuren..i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/other-sport/article7271854.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1388198592-1.jpgCaptain Graeme van Buuren said Gloucestershire have "worked so hard" after winning their first County Championship match since September 2022. Gloucestershire beat Northamptonshire by 256 runs on the final day at Wantage Road, to claim their first red-ball victory in 593 days and 20 matches. The win moved the club up to fifth in Division Two, after drawing three and losing one of their other four matches of 2024 so far. "We've worked so hard to get to this point, the efforts from everybody was fantastic," Van Buuren told BBC Radio Bristol. "It was a great team performance and I think we've played some great cricket leading up to this point. To have lady luck on our side for once was amazing." Miles Hammond scored a century on the first day of play, before Marchant de Lange took his 13th five-wicket haul on day two to lay the groundwork. Cameron Bancroft's century on day three - his first since returning to the club - then led Gloucestershire to the verge of the win. "He [Bancroft] did it with so much composure, so much skill, and so much calmness and that's what we've been missing over the last couple of years," Van Buuren said. "It's so important for us to learn from that and to take it forward." Pace bowler De Lange then took 3-58 on the final day to help inflict Northamptonshire's first defeat of 2024. "I can't fault the efforts, the boys ran in for ball after ball and we just knew if we stuck to our plans, stuck to our guns, our rewards would come and they did come in clusters," Van Buuren added. "I'm not looking too far ahead, all I'm looking for is to play good cricket. "What we did in this game, we played some fantastic cricket, and looking forward that's all I'm going to ask for the boys - to take it ball by ball, game by game." i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/other-sport/article6914471.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1312660338.jpg

WOW - Gloucestershire registered the highest score in their 154-year first-class history - 706-6dec.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/19/11/82632717-0-image-a-38_1710847787730.jpg Cameron Bancroft made 160Gloucestershire registered the highest score in their 154-year first-class history before making substantial inroads into the Leicestershire reply on the second day of the County Championship Division Two match at Leicester. Captain Graeme Van Buuren hit a century at better than a run a ball, becoming the third batsman in his team to reach three figures after Cameron Bancroft and Ben Charlesworth had reached the landmark on day one, before declaring on 706-6 at tea. It was the first time Gloucestershire had passed 700, surpassing the 695-9 made against Middlesex in 2004, and the fifth highest first-class score made against Leicestershire. Young leg-spinner Ed Middleton then won decisions off consecutive deliveries as Leicestershire were reduced to 133-5 at the close. Gloucestershire started the day on 385-2 but failed to pick up a fifth batting bonus point, losing Miles Hammond off the inside edge trying to drive a Scott Currie delivery. Ollie Price passed 50 for the third time this season before missing an attempted reverse sweep at Rehan Ahmed but Van Buuren and James Bracey took Leicestershire’s tiring young attack apart during a partnership of 147 for the fifth wicket. Bracey edged a drive at a wide delivery from Currie to Ben Cox behind the stumps on 92 but Van Buuren went to his century, made from 90 balls, with a six off Louis Kimber. Needing 557 simply to avoid the follow on, Leicestershire made a poor start when Marcus Harris was given out leg before to Matt Taylor. Kimber went for 46 when he went back to a delivery from Middleton that skidded on and looked to be missing leg stump and the next ball saw Lewis Hill given out caught off bat-pad when replays suggested the bat may not have been involved. Josh Shaw’s full delivery then trapped Peter Handscomb on the back foot before Ahmed’s airy waft resulted in the young England all-rounder edging Beau Webster’s delivery to Bracey.

All good points tenniscourt. And now Charlesworth has his century, which will do him the world of good. Really pleased for James Bracey after some wretched years to be actually showing his class again. Good luck to him. I actually think Yorkshire are rapidly becoming a bit of a basket case and of course they should go up but they’ve had 6 games and are yet to win. I don’t think Root or Brook will play again until September so they’ve not taken advantage of having them. But I agree pushing for promotion could be a prospect for Gloucestershire. The Derbyshire match will be very important as it’s more or less the last match before a long gap. To be up around the top would be good though Sussex and Middlesex look to be going well. And of course Cameron Bancroft is having a good season and I’m pleased for him. He was really affected by the scandal with the sandpaper and whilst the two main cheats Warner and Smith were also punished I think the impact on Bancroft was greater. Smith and Warner are I hope ashamed of themselves for bullying the junior member of their side to do what he did. I hope he continues to find redemption at Gloucestershire and does well. The other two can…. There are plenty of runs around this season which I think is quite surprising. Like Somerset in the last match Gloucestershire found it hard to get the win and bowl Leicestershire out the second time. We just about bowled Kent out in time to chase the runs but I think our bowlers are better than Gloucestershire’s at the moment. But to get the record first class score after over 150 years is something special.

Leics bat out final day to draw with Gloucs..What a great effort by them in reply to the massive 706-6 dec.
images.football.co.uk/750x417/cricket.jpg
Vitality County Championship Division Two, Uptonsteel County Ground, Leicester (day 4)
Gloucestershire 706-6 dec: Bancroft 160, Charlesworth 126, van Buuren 103
Leicestershire 371: Patel 117 & 377-7 (f/o): Handscomb 81
Leicestershire (11 pts) drew with Gloucestershire (14 pts)Half-centuries from Rishi Patel, Lewis Hill, Peter Handscomb and Rehan Ahmed saw Leicestershire secure a hard-fought draw after being asked to follow on in their County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Grace Road. Just four overs remained when the captains shook hands on the draw after an outstanding two-day effort on the part of the visitors’ weakened and largely inexperienced bowling attack. Beginning the final day on 24-0 and needing another 311 runs to make Gloucestershire bat again, the Foxes lost three wickets in the morning session. Opener Marcus Harris (17), his feet planted, reached for a wide delivery from Josh Shaw and bottom-edged a catch through to wicketkeeper James Bracey, young batter Louis Kimber (13) was bowled driving at a straight delivery from Beau Webster and first-innings centurion Patel (51) was well caught by Bracey pushing forward at an Ollie Price delivery. Only one wicket fell in the afternoon, Hill and Handscomb first digging in and then beginning to play more expansively before captain Hill (54) was bowled behind his legs by Ben Middleton. But with the hitherto largely unresponsive pitch beginning to offer turn, young spinners Middleton and Price, along with seamer Shaw, picked up a wicket apiece after tea to give Graeme van Buuren’s side hope of pulling off the victory. Ahmed (55) charged to a half-century at almost a run a ball, but was then stumped by Bracey after being beaten going forward to Price, and when Ben Cox (18) and then Handscomb (81) departed in quick succession, Gloucestershire still had hope. It was extinguished, however, by Ben Mike (37 not out) and Tom Scriven (25 not out), who compiled a chanceless unbeaten partnership of 61 for the eighth wicket. Report by ECB Reporters' Network.

I'm enjoying following GCCC online more than England (football) on TV at the moment. And while Southgate's not the most exciting manager, it's the underperformamce of England's top class club players that's to blame for that. Thank goodness for the shire.
