Already 5-1 ahead after a dominant first-leg showing in the Czech Republic, Darwin Nunez's opener was the first of four goals in seven first-half minutes as the Reds overwhelmed their opponents. And by full-time the hosts had run up their biggest aggregate win in a European competition since the 11-2 success over Finnish side Oulun Palloseura in the first round of the European Cup 1980-81. West Ham United 5 Freiburg 0 (agg: 5-1)ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B592/production/_132928464_gettyimages-2084343664.jpgWest Ham recorded the biggest European win in their history as they swept aside Freiburg to overturn a first-leg deficit and march into a third successive quarter-final. Before the match David Moyes evoked the memories of their comeback win against Sevilla at the same stage of the competition two seasons ago - and this time the Hammers boss got a similar outcome. Yet unlike that night against the Spaniards, when the home fans were tortured by tension and did not seal victory until extra-time, West Ham had the job wrapped up within an hour against a poor Freiburg side. Brighton & Hove Albion 1 Roma 0 (agg: 1-4)ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/005C/production/_132929000_gettyimages-2076707106-1.jpgBrighton's Europa League adventure ended at the last-16 stage despite their victory over Roma at the Amex. Roberto de Zerbi's side fought hard throughout and had their chances, but a 4-0 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico in the first leg meant this task was beyond them. In a feisty encounter, Danny Welbeck's superb curling strike eight minutes before the break lifted Brighton's hopes. And although they exerted pressure throughout, the hosts were unable to get near to pulling off what would have been a stunning comeback. Roma's Sardar Azmoun had a superb first-half overhead kick controversially disallowed for a high foot to keep Brighton in the contest, but they were unable to convert opportunities that came their way in the second half. Rangers 0 Benfica 1 (agg: 2-3)ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2CDA/production/_132928411_21013637_-2.jpgRangers' Europa League campaign crashed to an end as Rafa Silva's breakaway goal sent Benfica into the quarter-finals after another thrilling encounter at Ibrox. Silva raced on to Angel di Maria's second-half knockdown to cut across Mohamed Diomande and fire past Jack Butland, with Rangers badly exposed from their own corner. The strike was initially ruled offside before a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review determined the Portuguese had just stayed inside his own half before showing exquisite execution to silence a raucous stadium. Rangers failed to muster a real fightback as Roger Schmidt's side managed the game well to secure progression.

Europa League: Fans' group criticises Uefa ticket allocation for Aviva Stadium final..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/083F/production/_133111120_gettyimages-1794644328.jpg Aviva Stadium in Dublin will host this season's Europa League finalFans' group Football Supporters Europe has criticised Uefa's allocation of 12,000 tickets per club for the Europa League final at Aviva Stadium. The allocation accounts for 50% of the Dublin venue's 48,000 capacity. English clubs Liverpool and West Ham have reached the Europa League quarter-finals and could meet in the final on 22 May. "A paltry 50% of capacity for Europa League finalist clubs is, simply, not good enough," said FSE. "[It] falls well short of FSE's demand to provide at least 66% of tickets for all European finals to supporters of the teams involved. "Fans of competing teams need to be given clear priority over public sale options. "Based on previous experiences, a higher allocation of tickets for general sale will significantly fuel black market ticket activity, exploiting fans' loyalty in the process." European football's governing body Uefa said it made its decision "after extensive discussions with the local authorities regarding logistical operations as well as the designated access routes to the ends of the stadium occupied by supporters of each of the finalists". Uefa will be selling a further 12,000 tickets for the Europa League final via its ticketing portal. In March, Uefa general secretary Theodore Theodoridis said it "would be extremely challenging" to accommodate supporters if clubs with bigger fanbases reached the Europa League final. This season's Champions League finalists will receive a combined 58% allocation of 25,000 tickets each for the match at Wembley on 1st June. In 2022, Uefa apologised after Liverpool fans were teargassed before the Champions League final in Paris. Uefa and French authorities initially blamed ticketless fans for the events. However, an independent report found Uefa bore "primary responsibility" for the scenes that led to kick-off being delayed by 36 minutes. There was also criticism of the 2023 Champions League final in Istanbul, with fans reportedly having to walk extended distances along busy roads, queue for hours for transport to and from the stadium and being left without water before Manchester City beat Inter Milan.

Why do UEFA continue to book relatively small venues? I guess it comes down to the size of the brown envelope they receive before allocating the final. 2. Does this imply 12,000 tickets are going to "friends of UEFA"? More brown envelopes. More favours for favours. 3. Why are all the games kicking off at 8pm? Surely this halves TNT advertising revenue? Also annoying for supporters who might want to catch a couple of games in the same evening. Solution. TNT need to buy some brown envelopes. UEFA. It's all about the envelopes.

Thursday 18th April 2024 - Europa League Quarter-Final - 2nd Leg - Result
West Ham United 1 (Antonio 13) Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1 (Frimpong 89) - Agg: 1-3
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12262/production/_133183347_gettyimages-2149157194.jpg Michail Antonio scored his first Europa League goal of the season against Bayer LeverkusenWest Ham were knocked out of the Europa League as Jeremie Frimpong's late leveller denied them the consolation of becoming the first team to beat new German champions Bayer Leverkusen this season. Michail Antonio's 13th-minute header at London Stadium gave David Moyes' side the perfect start in their attempts to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg. But despite dominating the opening period they were unable to prize open the Leverkusen defence a second time. Jarrod Bowen came closest when his far-post effort was saved by Matej Kovar but Xabi Alonso's side improved significantly after the break. Frimpong blazed over after running clear of the defence, but made amends in the 89th minute with a shot that took a significant deflection off Aaron Cresswell and flew past Lukasz Fabianski. The goal preserved Leverkusen's incredible unbeaten record since a 3-0 reverse at Bochum on 27th May last year, 328 days ago, and booked a last-four meeting with Brighton's conquerors Roma, who knocked out AC Milan. In truth, a tiring West Ham had run out of ideas before Frimpong's equaliser. They were offered a warm ovation from their fans though, a mark of appreciation for a memorable three-year chapter of European adventures which brought them their first trophy in 43 years last season when they won the Europa Conference League. They do have an outside chance of qualifying for a fourth consecutive European season but they would need to improve significantly on their recent Premier League form, while the future of manager David Moyes, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is uncertain.

Thursday 18th April 2024 - Europa League Quarter-Final - 2nd Leg - Result
Atalanta 0 Liverpool 1 (Salah 7 pen) - Agg: 3-1
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/142CE/production/_133183628_gettyimages-2149156822.jpg Mohamed Salah's penalty was his 24th goal of the season in all competitions
Report By Callum Matthews, BBC Sport.Liverpool's hopes of ending Jurgen Klopp's reign with a European trophy are over after they failed to overturn a first-leg deficit against Atalanta. The Reds travelled to Italy on the back of a 3-0 defeat at Anfield last Thursday and, despite controlling the game for the large periods, could not find the required goals and lost 3-1 on aggregate. Mohamed Salah's seventh-minute penalty, after a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross was handled, gave them hope. As the first half drew to a close, the Egypt forward lofted well wide when put through one-on-one, but Klopp's side struggled to create meaningful openings in the second period. It marks the end of a difficult 12 days for the Reds, who drew at Manchester United and lost at home to Crystal Palace to surrender their lead at the top of the Premier League. Attention will now turn back to the title race with Liverpool sitting third behind second-placed Arsenal and two points off leaders Manchester City. The league now represents their final chance to give Klopp a fairytale ending to his eight and a half years on Merseyside and add to their success in the Carabao Cup in February.

Thursday 18th April 2024 - Europa League Quarter-Final - 2nd Leg - Result
Roma 2 (Mancini 12, Dybala 22, Celik 31 sent off) AC Milan 1 (Gabbia 85) - Agg: 3-1
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8622/production/_133183343_gettyimages-2147907410.jpg Paulo Dybala scored in Roma's Europa League final loss to Sevilla last season
Report By Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport.Roma progressed to the Europa League semi-finals by beating Serie A rivals AC Milan at Stadio Olimpico. Gianluca Mancini opened the scoring for the hosts after 12 minutes before Paulo Dybala doubled Roma's lead 10 minutes later to cement a 3-1 aggregate victory. Daniele de Rossi's side went down to 10 men after Mehmet Zeki Celik's lunging challenge on Rafael Leao. Matteo Gabbia scored a late consolation for Milan. Defender Mancini was quickest to react to tap home Lorenzo Pellegrini's shot after it struck the woodwork. World Cup winner Dybala then gave the home side breathing space after he looped a brilliant effort over Mike Maignan in the Milan goal. England international Tammy Abraham, who recently returned from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, came off the bench in the 28th minute in place of the injured Romelu Lukaku. Roma will take on Bayer Leverkusen for a place in the Europa League final after the Bundesliga champions overcame West Ham.

Marseille win 4-2 on penaltiesichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6FDE/production/_133183682_gettyimages-2147909203.jpgMarseille are through to the Europa League semi-finals after beating Benfica 4-2 on penalties at the Stade Velodrome. Substitute Faris Moumbagna scored the only goal of the second leg after 79 minutes to take the tie to extra time with the aggregate score level at 2-2. Marseille scored all of their penalties while Angel di Maria and Antonio Silva missed for Benfica. The French side will take on Atalanta - who beat Liverpool - in the last four. Having come into Thursday's second leg trailing 2-1, Jean Louis Gasset's side started on the front foot. With the clock ticking down, Benfica looked to hold on to their slender lead but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang created an opportunity for Moumbagna to convert. And in the shootout, the Stade Velodrome erupted as Luis Henrique slotted his penalty to send Marseille through. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/18/c40a496a-0af3-4a62-9428-ba216dac0253.jpg

Thursday 9th May 2024 - Europa League Semi-Finals - 2nd Leg Result
Atalanta 3 (Lookman 30, Ruggeri 52, Toure 90+4) Marseille 0 - (agg: 4-1)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/8173/production/_133293133_e8f982238a18fd6a1d5423ed815d4aa80b2b7e6a.jpg Ademola Lookman made 11 appearances for England Under-21s
Report By Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport.Ademola Lookman scored as Atalanta sealed their place in the Europa League final with a 4-1 aggregate win over Marseille at the Gewiss Stadium. The former Everton and Fulham winger scored on the half-hour mark when his deflected strike drifted beyond visiting keeper Pau Lopez into the bottom corner. Matteo Ruggeri gave Atalanta a two-goal cushion at the start of the second half as he powered a right-foot drive into the top corner. Substitute El Bilal Toure added gloss to the success, scoring with the last kick of the game in injury time. After reaching their first final in European competition, Gian Piero Gasperini's side will take on Xabi Alonso's unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on 22 May. Atalanta, who knocked out Liverpool in the previous round, spurned numerous chances to put the tie beyond Jean-Louis Gasset's men in the first half. Marseille were also given a chance to level the tie early in the second half, but former Sheffield United forward Iliman Ndiaye failed to hit the target with his lobbed effort over Juan Musso. Atalanta, though, continued with their attacking approach and Ruggeri's brilliant strike in the 52nd minute settled home nerves in Bergamo. Jordan Veretout struck the bar with a free-kick from 40 yards as Marseille tried to get back into the game, which had finished 1-1 in the first leg in France. But Atalanta claimed a third goal in the fourth minute of added time when Mali striker Toure fired a fine finish across Lopez.

Thursday 9th May 2024 - Europa League Semi-Finals - 2nd Leg Result
Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2 (Mancini 82 og, Stanisic 90+7) Roma 2 (Paredes 43 pen, 66 pen) - (agg: 4-2)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/1319F/production/_133293287_gettyimages-2151637617.jpg Leverkusen went back ahead on aggregate when Roma's Gianluca Mancini inadvertently scored an own goal
Report By Emma Smith, BBC Sport.Bayer Leverkusen set a new European unbeaten record of 49 successive games in securing a late draw with Roma to reach the Europa League final. Josip Stanisic scored with the last kick of the game in the 97th minute to earn Xabi Alonso's side a 2-2 draw on the night and a 4-2 aggregate victory. Roma, who had lost the first leg in Italy but were much improved in Germany, drew level in the tie through two Leandro Paredes penalties. But a disastrous own goal from Gianluca Mancini handed Leverkusen the crucial advantage in the two-legged semi-final - before Croatia defender Stanisic ensured history with the latest in a long line of Leverkusen late goals. They have now gone 49 successive games without defeat in all competitions, including 40 victories. It means Leverkusen, who were knocked out by Roma at this stage last season, better the unbeaten run the Eusebio-led Benfica side managed between December 1963 and February 1965. That feat by the Portuguese giants was the longest unbeaten run since the advent of European competition, according to Uefa - until this remarkable Leverkusen campaign. Alonso's men, who are seeking a treble this season having won the Bundesliga title and also reached the German Cup final, will face Italian side Atalanta in the Europa League showpiece in Dublin on 22nd May.

Amazing performance from the team, we did it, we did it, we did it! Not got much else to say but yeah fantastic. "They do always say third time lucky, so yeah it is for us today [winning a final at the third attempt this season]. I'm just happy we won. We won today so yes very pleased. On the party tonight: "100%! We've got to celebrate, we made history tonight." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/22/42c845a9-4975-436e-afac-0597392ad4e2.jpgBayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso speaking to TNT Sports: "Absolutely. We did not plan on having a bad day today, but it was not meant to be. We could not cope with many difficult situations that we were preparing because Atalanta demand so much of you. One v one situations, duels, but we were not getting the ball in the right situations to take advantage. They do that so well. "We were not able to come back and get that back. It was not meant to be. The unbeaten run has come to an end but congratulations to Atalanta, they deserve it, so nothing more to say. On Atalanta's approach: "Yes I would say so [they were better in every aspect]. When they scored the first goal they got a lot of energy. We probably tried to play too many passes in the first phase when we should have tried to attract the first player then go long a bit more. "It was not about tactics. Individually they were better and as a team as well. We have to learn from that. It hurts that it comes in a big day like today but we have another final on Saturday and we will try to learn from today." More from Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso speaking to TNT Sports: "Atalanta are very brave. They don't mind being in one v one situations. We had some chances to put them under pressure with lots of numbers but they defended very well so we were not able to create chances. It is not something they have just done this year, they have been doing it for many years. They are a special team. Normally we get in better positions ourselves but today we could not. On his pride for the season: "For me the result today does not change one bit how I feel about my players or what we have been doing. It hurts because we wanted to lift the trophy but you can't have everything. We lifted the Bundesliga and we have the chance to lift the DFB Pokal on Saturday. "It does not change the effort from the guys. Ok after 51 games we arrive at the 52nd and we have lost but this is football. The other team deserves it and we have another chance on Saturday." More from Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso speaking to TNT Sports: "Yes for sure this season and achievements have surpassed all expectations. I was hoping and getting ready to maybe do something great but this has been so much more. "To achieved what we have for a club like Leverkusen is great. To be in the last week of the season having lifted the Bundesliga and playing today we couldn't make it and then going for the Pokal too means a lot. First year as a coach, it is going quite well.

What a strange game. Lervekusen were miles off the pace. Fair play to Atalanta, very few people saw that result coming. Lookman - 1 goal from 36 games at Everton. Looks like he's kicked on a bit from there then...

Looks like he's kicked on a bit from there then... I have just posted this on GG about this...Just a one off about the hat-trick scored last night by Ademola Lookman in the Europa League final - Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/4981ed2e-d530-4ca5-9895-2cb779e05f7c.jpgHe played and scored on our hallowed turf for Charlton's 1-5 victory on 22nd November 2016, in front of a 8,089 crowd. He went on to play for Everton in a £11m transfer, ending up at Atalanta where he has played 75 games, scoring 30 goals.
