Ajax 0 BRIGHTON 2 (Ansu Fati 14, Adingra 53)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1821E/production/_131664889_gettyimages-1772616315.jpg On-loan Barcelona forward Ansu Fati scored and created a goal for BrightonBrighton boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the Europa League with a comfortable win over a youthful Ajax side in Amsterdam. Ansu Fati opened the scoring for the visitors with a low effort into the bottom-left corner after collecting Simon Adingra's pass. Fati then turned provider, as Ivory Coast winger Adringa doubled Brighton's lead with a rising close-range effort. Brian Brobbey's volley, which hit both posts, was the closest Ajax came to scoring. Roberto de Zerbi's side move on to seven points and could clinch their place in next phase of the tournament if they win at AEK Athens in their penultimate in Group B fixture. Four-time European champions Ajax, whose starting line-up had an average age of 21.6 years, are bottom of the group with just two points from four matches. .................................................................................................................................................................. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1278/live/d6a040b0-7a46-11ee-b315-7d1db3f558c6.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/105F0/production/_131665076_gettyimages-1784420196.jpg Jarell Quansah appeared to have scored his first senior goal for Liverpool - but it was disallowedA controversial video assistant referee decision denied Liverpool a stoppage-time equaliser as they suffered a surprise Europa League loss to Toulouse. Jarell Quansah's goal to make it 3-3 in the seventh minute of added time was ruled out after Alexis Mac Allister was judged to have handled the ball. Quansah slammed in from close range to spark wild Liverpool celebrations and furious protestations from Toulouse before Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov was called to the VAR screen - having already appeared to point to the centre circle. The ball had bounced off Mac Allister's chest into his upper arm much earlier in the move, which was ruled enough to disallow the goal. Toulouse impressed for much of the match and went 2-0 up though strikes from Aron Donnum and Thijs Dallinga. Liverpool pulled one back through a bizarre own goal from Cristian Casseres Jr, but Frank Magri restored the French side's two-goal advantage. Substitute Diogo Jota then scored for Liverpool with two minutes of normal time left and they thought they had earned a point with virtually the final kick of the match, before VAR's intervention. ................................................................................................................................................................ THURSDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2023 - EUROPA LEAGUE - GROUP A
West Ham United 1 (Lucas Paquetá 73) Olympiakos 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11CC/production/_131665540_gettyimages-1772944492.jpg Lucas Paqueta scored his third goal in this season's Europa LeagueLucas Paqueta's excellent finish 17 minutes from time gave West Ham victory in their Europa League encounter with Greek side Olympiakos to send them to the brink of the knockout stages. Paqueta lit up what had been a largely drab contest at the London Stadium when he perfectly met James Ward-Prowse's chipped cross into the penalty area and sent his volley into the corner. Although the goal was initially ruled out for offside, the Brazilian put his hands together in prayer, which was rewarded when video assistant referee confirmed Paqueta had been onside as Ward-Prowse delivered the crucial pass. The win, avenged West Ham's loss to the same opponents in Athens a fortnight ago, which marked the end of an impressive 17-match unbeaten run for David Moyes' side in Europe. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/14664/production/_131665538_gettyimages-1784571362.jpg"It's good to get back on track. Olympiakos are a seasoned European team and they showed that tonight," said Hammers boss Moyes. "We're top of the group, we still have two matches to play but I think this is the hardest group we've had. Europe has been great for this football club, we've had some great nights and long may they continue. "He [Lucas Paqueta] took the goal brilliantly tonight but there were lots of things I wanted him to do better. We've got room for improvement." The result means West Ham remain above German rivals Freiburg at the head of Group A based on their head-to-head record, knowing two points from their final two games will be enough to ensure Europa League action after Christmas. Victory was not achieved without a late scare as Mady Camara hit the woodwork when he should have done better with a stooping header at the far post. But it was a disappointing night for watching Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis, who will hope for better fortune on Sunday when his other club Nottingham Forest come here in the Premier League. ....................................................................................................................................................................... RANGERS 2 (Pereira da Silva 11, Cantwell 20) Sparta Prague 1 (Haraslín 77)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1032A/production/_131664366_20912762.jpg Todd Cantwell's goal proved to be the winner for RangersRangers strengthened their hopes of progressing to the Europa League knockout stages as they survived a nervy finish to beat Sparta Prague at Ibrox. First-half strikes from Danilo at Todd Cantwell gave the hosts a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time, before Lukas Haraslin's goal after the break halved the deficit. Rangers missed several chances to kill the game off, but held on for a crucial three points despite a late rally by the Czech side. Philippe Clement's side now sit second in Group C, two points behind Real Betis and three clear of Sparta. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9ED0/production/_131665604_20912677.jpgA goal and an assist, Danilo, Rangers' big-money summer signing was a constant threat up top and could have scored more on another day.Rangers started the game on the front foot and should have led inside six minutes, but Cantwell's cross-shot evaded Danilo with Sparta's defence breached. However, Clement's side kept their foot to the floor and didn't have to wait much longer to hit the front. A horrible error from James Gomez put Danilo clean through on Peter Vindahl's goal, and the Brazilian slid a calm finish into the corner. With Ibrox at its raucous best, Rangers poured forward again and again, and doubled their lead in clinical fashion. Danilo fed Cantwell, who cut inside before rolling a clinical finish past Vindahl's despairing dive. Sparta were powerless to resist the hosts, and it was only the frame of the goal that denied Danilo his second of the night before the break. There was a drop-off in the second half, despite an impressive performance from young substitute Ross McCausland, and Sparta got themselves on the scoreboard when Haraslin finished off a slick team move. Rangers wasted several chances on the break, and were forced to endure a nervy finish to the game as an increasingly confident Sparta pushed for an equaliser that ultimately wouldn't come. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/63D4/production/_131665552_-80a180df-4deb-49ca-b2f5-78597bf6f068.png...................................................................................................................................................................
