Pity they are no longer a football league club but have a Bristol born player as current manager Danny Rose.

‘Victoria Hall Disaster’……how utterly sad was that The Victoria Hall disaster occurred on 16th June 1883 at the Victoria Hall in Sunderland, England, when the distribution of free toys caused a crowd crush resulting in 183 children (aged between 3 and 14 years old) to be crushed to death due to compressive asphyxia. Embossed with a centipede character (Centy), in BB uniform, with a BB flag. A series of beacons were lit up across the country. We went to one somewhere on Lansdown, Bath. Met at Weston Free Church and walked up Lansdown Lane. I can remember looking down on the city, thinking it was going to be a big year for Rovers too.

In 1883, Treasure Island was first published. Written in Bristol by a gashead in the llandoger trow pub apparently? Pirates developed from their press ganging prevalent better to go to sea than risk watching the upcoming Bristol Southend!

I believe Robert L Stevenson is a Scot.
Edit: also, he was unlikely to have been a 'Gashead' the year of or before 'Black Arabs' (as in 1883 we were called) we were called. What were you drinking?

Ragbag Rovers manage to survive with sensible planning and occasional sale of players. The East Bristol school teachers William Somerton started a club because there was too much rugby in the area. The Black Arabs were the first in Bristol. The Rovers History Group are compiling a brochure covering the clubs formative years 1883 to 1897. A second brochure will be produced 1898 to 1920 during 2025. If anyone wants a copy get in touch
