Lautaro Martinez's shot was parried into the path of Arnautovic by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak and the Austrian forward finished with a powerful shot from a tight angle.
Arnautovic had missed several big chances earlier in the second half.
He headed over the bar as well as firing over with the goal gaping.

The Dutch striker equalised 10 minutes into the second half after Mats Hummels was adjudged to have fouled Malik Tillman in the box.
Donyell Malen had put Dortmund ahead in the first half when his deflected shot flew in off the crossbar.

Harry Kane scored two to help Bayern Munich overturn a first-leg deficit against Lazio and advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Rome, Bayern looked set for a frustrating night until Kane's header levelled the scores on aggregate.
Long-serving Thomas Muller doubled the lead on the night with another header.
Kane made it 3-1 on aggregate from close range after Leroy Sane's shot was parried into his path.
It was an impressive turnaround by Bayern, who have endured a bitterly disappointing domestic campaign.
Thomas Tuchel's side were facing a first season without a major trophy since 2011-12.
However, this win keeps alive Tuchel's hopes of delivering Bayern a seventh European title before the former Chelsea boss leaves at the end of the season.
The quarter-final draw takes place on the 15th March.

Real Madrid reached the Champions League quarter-finals as Vinicius Junior provided the quality finish which RB Leipzig lacked to secure a 2-1 aggregate win in the last 16.

Like the first leg, German side Leipzig were made to pay for wasting a host of chances when Vinicius clipped in Jude Bellingham's pass with 25 minutes left for a 2-0 lead.

Leipzig finally converted an opportunity three minutes later when skipper Willi Orban flicked in a header.

The goal provided renewed belief to the Bundesliga side and they continued to open up the Spanish league leaders as they searched for a leveller.

Former Barcelona youngster Dani Olmo came the closest to taking the tie into extra time - because away goals no longer count in Uefa competitions - when his looping header clipped the top of the crossbar in injury time.

But Real, aiming to become European champions for a record-extending 15th time, managed to hold out and reach the quarter-finals for the 12th time in the past 14 seasons.

Carlo Ancelotti's side will find out their quarter-finals opponents when the draw for the last eight is made on Friday 15th March at 11am.

Arsenal advanced into the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since 2010 after seeing off Porto on penalties on what was a dramatic night.

The Gunners knew they needed to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and Leandro Trossard ensured they'd completed half of their mission by half-time. Porto did anything but sit in as they sought to protect their lead, but couldn't stop the Belgian putting Arsenal ahead.

His neat finish owing to a sensational Martin Odegaard assist. Porto, for all their quality, had only scored once in their last nine visits to England and were unable to find the goal that would've potentially turned the tie as the game went to extra-time before the lottery of penalties was required.

David Raya endeared himself to the Arsenal faithful as he saved initially from Wendell - with the help of the post - in front of the home section before he then stopped Galeno - which sealed the shootout victory as the Gunners continue to dream in Europe.

Champions League quarter-final draw - So when will Arsenal learn their quarter-final opponent?

Atletico Madrid dramatically beat Inter Milan on penalties to reach the Champions League quarter-finals and eliminate last season's runners-up.

It finished 2-2 on aggregate at the end of extra time after Inter had thrown away a two-goal advantage.

Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak was then the hero, saving penalties from Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, before Inter's Lautaro Martinez blasted his spot-kick over as the Spanish side advanced in thrilling style.

Inter, who lost 1-0 to Manchester City in last season's final, went first in the shootout but Oblak saved two of the first three kicks he faced. Atletico's Saul Niguez also missed, with Yann Sommer blocking his effort.

However, Memphis Depay, Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa all converted their penalties to take Atletico into the last eight and complete a superb recovery.

Serie A leaders Inter won 1-0 in the first leg in Italy and looked to be cruising through when they doubled their overall advantage on Wednesday through Federico Dimarco's first-time finish following Nicolo Barella's pull-back on the left.

But Atletico pulled a goal back two minutes later, drawing level on the night.

Koke's pass was not cleared, Benjamin Pavard sliced his clearance and Antoine Griezmann reacted quickest to give his side hope of a memorable fightback.

Substitute Depay hit the inside of the post for Atletico as they looked to get the goal they needed.

It came soon after as Depay's low, angled shot in the 87th minute went in the bottom corner to the delight of the passionate home crowd.

Another Atletico substitute, Riquelme, had a glorious chance to win the tie but blazed over in the third minute of injury time as the match went into extra time, with neither side able to find the decisive goal before the drama of penalties.

Before this week, there had not been a penalty shootout in the Champions League since the 2016 final, when Real Madrid beat Atletico to lift the trophy.

Now there have been two in two days after Arsenal defeated Porto in similar fashion at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Diego Simeone's Atletico are fourth in La Liga, 14 points behind leaders Real, and were eliminated by Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

They have never won the European Cup or Champions League, losing in the final in 1974, 2014 and 2016, but kept their hopes alive this season as they became the first side to defeat Inter in 2024.

The Italians, led by coach Simone Inzaghi, have been in superb form and are 16 points clear at the top of Serie A as they look to become domestic champions for the 20th time.

On that basis, and with the lead they carved out, Inzaghi will know his side should have safely come through this contest.

Not only did they go out after holding a 2-0 advantage, but they twice had glorious opportunities to win the tie late on in 90 minutes.

Marcus Thuram and Barella failed to convert chances when faced with only Oblak to beat, and that proved costly as Atletico held their nerve in the shootout to book their place in Friday's draw.
