ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/5A17/production/_130936032_gettyimages-1648988538.jpgEngland comprehensively thrashed New Zealand by seven wickets with a professional performance in the first T20 of their four-match series at Chester-le-Street. Switching formats for their first action since the Ashes a month ago, the hosts romped to victory, reaching 140 with six overs to spare. Jonny Bairstow nicked the second ball of the chase to slip but Dawid Malan made a composed 54 from 42 balls. The left-hander fell with 24 needed from 48 but Harry Brook struck an unbeaten 27-ball 43 to take England home - two towering sixes reinforcing the surprise at his omission from England's provisional squad for their 50-over World Cup defence in India this autumn. A professional bowling performance from England set up the win by restricting New Zealand to 139-9. Luke Wood was hit for three sixes in the first over but recovered to take 3-37, while pace bowler Brydon Carse claimed an impressive 3-23 on his T20 debut at his home ground - the tourists never able to get going after their fast start. The series continues on Friday in Manchester.

1st SEPTEMBER 2023 - MEN'S INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20 MATCH - At Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester - England won the toss and decided to bat.
England - 198-4 (20 overs) Bairstow 86 not out, Brook 67, Sodhi 2-44
New Zealand - 103 all out (13.5 overs) Seifert 39, Atkinson 4-20
England win by 95 runsichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/12602/production/_130966257_gettyimages-1637909725-1.jpgA sublime batting display led England to a crushing 95-run win over New Zealand in the second T20 at Old Trafford. Opener Jonny Bairstow hit an unbeaten 86 from 60 balls and Harry Brook struck a magnificent 67 from 36 as England posted 198-4. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson then took 4-20 on his international debut as New Zealand crumbled to 103 all out. The win gives England a 2-0 lead in the four-match series. Brook and Bairstow added 131 for the third wicket after England lost Will Jacks for 19 and Dawid Malan for a duck. New Zealand's batters immediately felt the pressure of the run-rate as Atkinson dismissed opener Devon Conway in his first over. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid finished with 2-18 as he became England's leading T20 wicket taker. Tim Seifert top-scored with 39 but Glenn Phillips' 22 was the only other contribution of more than 20 as England backed up their comprehensive victory at Chester-le-Street with another dominant performance. England fast bowler Gus Atkinson on BBC Two: "I didn't know those were the best figures by an England bowler on T20 debut - that's lovely to hear. "They just told me to do what I've been doing - and it went great!" New Zealand captain Tim Southee on BBC Two: "England played brilliantly, the way Brook came out really took it to us. "We were probably a bit off with the ball, which makes it hard for our batters to chase down on that wicket. It's tough, chasing that score. You need something special." England captain Jos Buttler on BBC Two: "Having so many players to pick from is a good headache to have. You're always leaving out good players, which is tough. "Harry Brook is playing brilliantly. There's a lot of noise around the World Cup and him not being in that squad at the moment, but for him to just go and play the way he does - all credit must go to him. "There's a long time between now and when we get on the plane - you never know what can happen." England batter Harry Brook on BBC Two: "I try to play on instinct as much as possible and thankfully I hit a few out of the middle. "A couple of years ago I was getting too far head of myself, thinking about playing for England and not concentrating on playing for Yorkshire. I just knuckled down and thankfully it's worked out."

3rd SEPTEMBER 2023 - MEN'S INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20 MATCH - At Edgbaston, Birmingham - New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat.
New Zealand - 202-5 (20 overs) Allen 83, Phillips 69, Seifert 19, Atkinson 2-31
England - 128 all out (18.3 overs) Buttler 40, Ali 26, Jamieson 3-23, Sodhi 3-33
New Zealand win by 74 runs ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/394B/production/_130976641_gettyimages-1642790366.jpgEngland were outplayed by a resurgent New Zealand who won the third T20 international by 74 runs at Edgbaston. After opener Finn Allen struck 83 in New Zealand's 202-5, the tourists tied down England's vaunted top order as the hosts chased an unassailable 3-0 series lead. Jonny Bairstow was caught for 12 from 16 balls, Dawid Malan struggled for 11 balls for only two, while the in-form Harry Brook holed out for eight. Jos Buttler gave England fans hope with 40 from 21 balls but his dismissal, caught and bowled off Mitchell Santner, effectively ended his side's hopes. They were bowled out for 128 in the 19th over with leg-spinner Ish Sodhi taking 3-33 and seamer Kyle Jamieson an excellent 3-23 on his return from a back injury. Earlier, Allen hit six sixes and four fours in a stunning knock, while New Zealand's innings was given further impetuous by Glenn Phillips' 69 from 34 balls. The result means the four-match series heads to the finale on Tuesday at Trent Bridge with the outcome to be decided. What the two captains said:
England captain Jos Buttler, speaking on BBC One: "Credit to New Zealand, they outplayed us. It was a good toss to win and they put up a really challenging score, maybe a little bit over par. The partnership of Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips was one we just couldn't break and that was the main part of the game. "It's good exposure for us to play on those sorts of wickets. It's been a long summer, lots of cricket, I expect those types of pitches and it's been a good challenge with the bat." New Zealand captain Tim Southee, speaking on BBC One: "We asked for a better performance in all three areas and that was the kind of performance you expect to see when we play. "Finn showed his class and Glenn has been outstanding for us for a long time, especially on tricky surfaces. He made it look like a completely different surface to everyone else."

"It is nice to lead england. It is a massive honour and I love it. Jos [Buttler] is just having a rest today." On Rehan Ahmed: "He has a really good attitude and it looks like he is improving all the time, even in practice. It is great that he's getting an opportunity alongside [Adil] Rashid tonight, who he models himself on. It is nice to have five spinners today, it doesn't mean you're going to use them all but good to have those options." New Zealand captain Tim Southee: "More of the same tonight. What we saw on Sunday was the kind of performance that we've come to expect from our side and we're always looking to improve. "Our spinners have been quality for us for a long time. They work brilliantly together and it's very nice to have. "It's massive to have Kane Williamson back around the group, not only as a player but as a leader and a person, and any side with him in it is a better side." And we are all set to go...

New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "It looks a pretty decent surface but bowling first is the way we're looking to go today. "It is challenging when you're faced with a series leading up to the announcement. The focus is on these games and staying where our feet are and getting too far ahead. "This is about guys being in situations as best as they are and against a top-quality side." England captain Jos Buttler: "We would have looked to bat so both teams get to do what they want to do." On having Ben Stokes back: "It is fantastic to have a player like Ben back, for what he gives both on and off the field. I'm delighted to welcome him back." On getting balance of side back before the World Cup: "These four games give us an opportunity to try some different combinations. We have a couple of niggles so don't want to take any risks, so Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow miss out. "But it is about getting back to the ODI format, reconnecting with the things we do really well and playing for the team. "The injuries mean Dawid Malan and Harry Brook will come in to open." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/8/406a0b66-b518-4641-9076-2ab941465891.jpgBen Stokesichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/8/0bd3b8b7-f36e-48d6-92ab-75acc03ca2ad.jpgGus Atkinsonichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/8/b40c9fff-3a6e-4068-a74e-31e2395e183f.jpgGus Atkinson has just been presented his ODI cap by Stuart Broad in the team huddle.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/8/7e0ad7d0-96b6-4ec2-b7f8-df6c7b6ff97d.jpgHarry BrookThe teams

It's all over - New Zealand win by eight wickets
England captain Jos Buttler on Sky Sports: "It's disappointing. At halfway I thought we actually had a pretty good score. "Credit to them, it was a fantastic partnership. We couldn't find a way to break that and it opened the game up. "The way the schedule is, we've got to look after a few guys. It's a quick turnaround so we'll give opportunities and look after guys as well." Player of the match, New Zealand's Devon Conway on Sky Sports: "I'm pretty happy with the way the innings went. It was nice to get some time in the middle and get the win. "We thought England's score was just above par, but the bowlers did well to restrict them on that surface. We just knew that if we built those partnerships it would get us over the line." England bowler James Anderson on BBC Test Match Special: "When Bairstow and Roy are back, they come straight back in, that probably takes out Brook and Livingstone, meaning Moeen to come back in. "It's not a major worry for England, they've got so much experience in that team. Ben Stokes, Joe Root, these guys love this competition and the big moments."

Andrew Flintoff: Former England captain pictured at the game for first time since Top Gear accident..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7DAD/production/_131037123_gettyimages-1668187373.jpg Andrew Flintoff helped fielding drills with the England players before joining the coaching staff on the balcony during New Zealand's inningsFormer England captain Andrew Flintoff has been pictured for the first time since he was injured in an accident while filming Top Gear last year. Flintoff, 45, was injured in December at the motoring TV show's test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. He was seen with the England team during their one-day international with New Zealand at Cardiff on Friday. Filming of the 34th series of the BBC show was suspended pending a health and safety review into the incident. Flintoff was not working with England in a formal capacity but was invited to be around the team. The former all-rounder, who had visible scars on his face and tape on his nose, wore a bucket hat and dark glasses as he led fielding drills with the England players at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens. He was then seen sat on the England balcony during the New Zealand innings, with the visitors going on to complete a dominant eight-wicket victory. England captain Jos Buttler said it was "great" to have Flintoff around the squad. "He's obviously an England legend and it's just nice to have him around the group," Buttler said. "He's not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe. "A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he's settled in really well. It's great to have him with us. Just for this series." Following the accident on 13 December, Flintoff received medical care at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment. In March, the BBC apologised to Flintoff for his injuries and said it would continue to support him during his recovery. Flintoff retired from cricket in 2009 having played 79 Tests, 141 one-day internationals and seven T20s for England. He played a key role in England's Ashes successes of 2005 and 2009, and was captain between 2006 and 2007. Flintoff moved into TV presenting after retiring and joined Top Gear as a host in 2019 alongside Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/141E4/production/_131040428_da7e354b61a13876b8c304236e8eb15725a29f90.jpgFlintoff joined England coach Matthew Mott, Jonny Bairstow, and coach Marcus Trescothick on the England balcony

Wednesday 13th September 2023 - 3rd ODI International Series - At The Kia Oval, London - New Zealand won the toss and decided to field.
England - 368 all out (48.1 overs) Stokes 182, Malan 96, Buttler 38, Boult 5-51, Lister 3-69
New Zealand - 187 all out (39 overs) Phillips 72, Ravindra 28, Woakes 3-31, Livingstone 3-16
England win by 181 runsBen Stokes clobbered the highest score by an England batter in a one-day international in a 181-run trouncing of New Zealand at The Kia Oval. Stokes' brutal 182 beat the previous England best of 180, made by Jason Roy against Australia in Melbourne in 2018. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/6804/production/_131082662_benstokes.jpgIn only his third ODI since coming out of retirement to play in this year's World Cup, Stokes hammered some wayward New Zealand bowling for nine sixes and 15 fours in his 124-ball stay. Arriving at 13-2, Stokes added 199 for the third wicket with Dawid Malan, an England record partnership in an ODI against the Black Caps. Malan's 96 did plenty to cement his place in the starting XI for the World Cup in India. Despite losing their last six wickets for 32 runs, England piled up 368. Given the carnage caused by Stokes, Trent Boult's figures of 5-51 were extraordinary. Faced with pulling off the highest successful chase in an ODI in England, New Zealand were soon in disarray at 37-4, thanks chiefly to a three-wicket burst from Chris Woakes, who expertly used the movement on offer in an eight-over opening spell. Glenn Phillips battled to 72 to prolong the match, but after he was lbw on review to Liam Livingstone, New Zealand were hustled out for 187. England take a 2-1 lead in the series, which they can win with victory in the fourth and final match at Lord's on Friday. England captain Jos Buttler to BBC's Test Match Special: "We were tested losing two early wickets but it's exactly what I wanted us to do, take more risks, be more on the front foot. "Stokes has played a few good ones, but that was amazing. To score the highest one-day score for England, it was amazing." "I haven't seen as good new ball bowling in white-ball cricket for a while. Woakes and Topley were brilliant, it was a fantastic opening spell." England batter Ben Stokes: "It's not as easy as coming back and playing. You definitely have much more time. It's just familiarising myself with the ebbs and flows of it and it's something I think I did well here. "The bloke on the tannoy announced it just before I got out. I had no idea I had the record. Jason said well done and I said sorry to him." New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "Stokes and Dawid were fantastic. We tried to change things up, but they countered everything. "We did pull it back at the end of the innings but then we were 40-4, and we couldn't get any partnerships together. "We were thoroughly outplayed - but we have a big opportunity to level the series at Lord's."

England captain Jos Buttler: "It's a great day. The sun is out here at Lord's so let's get first use of the wicket. "There's three changes to the team. Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson miss out. Harry Brook, Brydon Carse and David Willey come in. "Jason Roy is getting there but frustratingly he is not yet fit to play. The other guys we wanted to rest and rotate ahead of what's coming up. "We lived out what we wanted to be in the last game, really positive and aggressive. Different surface and different ground today, but the same message." New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "We would've had a bat. Hopefully we can go well up top like we have done and put pressure on. Concerned at recent low scores?: "I wouldn't say there's any concern, we need to be able to adapt going forward to different surfaces. Any changes up top?: "Matt Henry and Tim Southee come in for Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/15/ce8077b4-f5b3-4d1e-af51-539b25f74df1.jpgIt's a nice ball from Henry, Bairstow just plays a straight prod. To get two hands on it that close to his ankle is such a hard skill as a slip fielder.

Friday 15th September 2023 - 4th ODI International Series - At Lord's Cricket Ground, London - England won the toss and decided to bat.
England 311-9 (50 overs) Malan 127, Buttler 36, Root 29, Livingstone 28, Ravindra 4-60
New Zealand 211 all out (38.2 overs) Ravindra 61, Nicholls 41, Phillips 25, Ali 4-50
England win by 100 runs ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/8BF6/production/_131103853_gettyimages-1682942902.jpgDawid Malan's sublime century inspired England to a series-clinching hammering of New Zealand in the fourth and final one-day international at Lord's. Malan, in prolific form before the World Cup starting in India next month, stroked 127 from 114 balls. That led England to 311-9, a total the bedraggled Black Caps never threatened. Off-spinner Moeen Ali claimed 4-50 as New Zealand were bowled out for 211 to give England victory by 100 runs. England take the series 3-1 in what is their last meaningful action before their defence of the World Cup. Next week, an almost entirely different England squad meet Ireland in a three-match one-day series, beginning at Headingley on Wednesday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/671F/production/_131099362_dawidmalan.jpgEngland player of the match, and player of the series, Dawid Malan: "It was good fun, especially at the home of cricket. It's good to get some runs on the board before the World Cup as well. I got away with a few early on, and found it hard to score, but when Jos [Buttler] came in we got going and in the end managed to get a score on the board. "Trying to break into this England white ball team you have to either be a freak or consistent. I've tried to be as consistent as I can be with the bat. I was gutted in the last game to get out when I looked to get a big score. So it was fantastic to back it up and contribute to a win. "Now I'm extremely excited to go the World Cup. it's a dream come true - if selected. It's a dream to play for England, let alone to be potentially going to a World Cup." England captain Jos Buttler to BBC's Test Match Special: "Absolutely, we've moved on from the first game, it's been nice to get that progression and get that series win. Batting display: "It cements our style of play and gets that win. Malan was fantastic and to get that 100, we put that pressure on. Everyone who batted impacted the game and got us up to that score. David Malan: "I think he's played brilliantly, every time he's played he's been consistent batting No.3. We've asked it of everyone. Harry Brook's opportunity?: "Every game is a good opportunity. Good players like Harry, you expect them to score runs. Sometimes that doesn't happen but he's a good, good player. Delaying squad announcement a big help?: "It allows us time to gather information and know where people are at. Know the series is finished, we know how to use that Ireland series. Having Andrew Flintoff in the coaching staff?: "It's been absolutely amazing, I've loved having him around the dressing room. It's quite surreal to be honest, no ego, you wouldn't think it was Andrew Flintoff. He's just been great to have around. If he wants to be involved in cricket more, we'd love to have him around. New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "I can't remember getting four injuries in one game before, but when you face those challenges it is important guys step up and we did pretty well with that. "At the halfway point we knew it was a good surface, maybe a little slow, but we weren't able to build partnerships and got behind the game." On Tim Southee's fitness: "He is in good spirits. In the coming days he will be assessed further to see how bad it is, but fingers crossed." On Rachin Ravindra: "He bowled fantastically well. We also saw a little bit of power with the bat at the end which is great." On losing three matches leading up to World Cup: "When you get to a World Cup it is slightly different. It is who turns up on the day. It has shown us areas we need to improve and it is good to come up against a quality side." On Kane Williamson's return to fitness: "It's been great to have him here. He has been progressing with his rehab. Fingers crossed he can keep going and be ready for the first game."

Jason Roy: England opener should go to the World Cup, says James Anderson..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Lord's.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/102C0/production/_131104266_jasonroy.jpg Jason Roy has not played competitively since the final of The Hundred on 27th AugustOpener Jason Roy should remain in England's World Cup squad despite not taking part in the series against New Zealand, according to James Anderson. Roy missed the 3-1 one-day series win with back spasms and may face Ireland next week in order to show his fitness. Harry Brook did not push his claim in Roy's absence, with scores of 25, two and 10. "If Roy is not fit, I'm sure Brook will replace him but if Roy is fit, he definitely goes," said Anderson. Roy, who was in the England team who won the World Cup in 2019, was in August named in a squad of 15 that selector Luke Wright said would defend the trophy in India in October and November. However, since then, captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott have said there could be changes, with the squad set to be finalised next week. After missing the first three matches of the series against New Zealand, Roy was part of the England warm-up before the final game at Lord's on Friday. But when the team was named at the toss, Roy was again omitted, with Buttler saying he could play in the three-match series against Ireland, for which England have named a separate 13-man party. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/DA16/production/_131103855_gettyimages-1682578823.jpgAnderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, said on Test Match Special: "I saw Jason Roy on the field today, he was taking high catches and playing with a rugby ball and running around and he looked pretty much pain free. "For me, he goes into that World Cup squad because I feel like he's played a big enough part over the last couple of years. "He's been in decent nick when he has played. Brook wasn't in that initial squad and he's not done anything to make me think he has to go." England play in the opening match of the World Cup against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on 5 October; their final squad has to be named by 28 September. "It allows us time to gather information," Buttler told Test Match Special. "When games are going on, it's a bit hard to know exactly where people are. Now the series is finished, it allows us to work out where everyone is at, or how we need to use that Ireland series. It will take a little bit of time." Roy could be part of the first match against Ireland at Headingley on Wednesday.

England v Ireland: Zak Crawley looks to 'lead from the front'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/42C4/production/_131129071_zakcrawley.jpg Zak Crawley will captain England in only his fourth ODIZak Crawley says he wants to "lead from the front" when he captains England for the first time in the one-day series against Ireland. With almost the entire World Cup squad rested, Crawley takes charge of a group containing four uncapped players. Joe Root is set to play in the opener to the three-match series, on his home ground of Headingley on Wednesday. "If I can get runs and field well, that will help my captaincy a lot. That's definitely on my mind," said Crawley. Kent opening batter Crawley, 25, has played 39 Tests for England but has not broken into a very strong white-ball team who are world champions in both limited-overs formats. His only previous three one-day caps came against Pakistan in 2021 as part of an entirely new squad after the initial party was ruled out because of a Covid outbreak. Now he is charge of a party containing the uncapped quartet of Derbyshire pace bowler George Scrimshaw, Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, Warwickshire batter Sam Hain and Lancashire left-arm spinner Tom Hartley. Strong performances against the Irish could lead to the players involved being asked to be on standby for the World Cup in India, which begins on 5th October. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/624/cpsprodpb/4576/production/_131128771_zakcrawley.jpg"We all know how this England white-ball team has played over the past eight years," Crawley told BBC Sport. "We know how to get into the main team, it's by being aggressive, showing people what skill and quality you have. That's what we should all try to do this week." Crawley has previously led Kent in two County Championship matches and two games in the T20 Blast. He said he will lean on former Test captain Root, who is looking to find some form after managing only 39 runs in four innings during the 3-1 series win against New Zealand. "To have him in the side as a batsman and former captain is going to be tremendously useful for me and the team," said Crawley. "No-one works harder than Joe, that's why he's the best. We all try to emulate him as much as we can. He's a great person to learn from and a role model for us all." Ireland were beaten by 10 wickets when they met England in a one-off Test at Lord's in June. They have not played any ODI cricket since failing to reach the World Cup at the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in July. They did, however, win their last ODI against England, the final match of England's 2-1 series win played under Covid restrictions in 2020. "Everyone is really buzzing to get out there and show what they are capable of," said Ireland captain Paul Stirling. "England are such a strong team. There is a reason why they are one of the best teams in the world. It's a good opportunity for us."
