Switching formats for their first action since the Ashes a month ago, the hosts romped to victory, reaching 140 with six overs to spare. Jonny Bairstow nicked the second ball of the chase to slip but Dawid Malan made a composed 54 from 42 balls. The left-hander fell with 24 needed from 48 but Harry Brook struck an unbeaten 27-ball 43 to take England home - two towering sixes reinforcing the surprise at his omission from England's provisional squad for their 50-over World Cup defence in India this autumn. A professional bowling performance from England set up the win by restricting New Zealand to 139-9. Luke Wood was hit for three sixes in the first over but recovered to take 3-37, while pace bowler Brydon Carse claimed an impressive 3-23 on his T20 debut at his home ground - the tourists never able to get going after their fast start. The series continues on Friday in Manchester.

Opener Jonny Bairstow hit an unbeaten 86 from 60 balls and Harry Brook struck a magnificent 67 from 36 as England posted 198-4. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson then took 4-20 on his international debut as New Zealand crumbled to 103 all out. The win gives England a 2-0 lead in the four-match series. Brook and Bairstow added 131 for the third wicket after England lost Will Jacks for 19 and Dawid Malan for a duck. New Zealand's batters immediately felt the pressure of the run-rate as Atkinson dismissed opener Devon Conway in his first over. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid finished with 2-18 as he became England's leading T20 wicket taker. Tim Seifert top-scored with 39 but Glenn Phillips' 22 was the only other contribution of more than 20 as England backed up their comprehensive victory at Chester-le-Street with another dominant performance. After opener Finn Allen struck 83 in New Zealand's 202-5, the tourists tied down England's vaunted top order as the hosts chased an unassailable 3-0 series lead. Jonny Bairstow was caught for 12 from 16 balls, Dawid Malan struggled for 11 balls for only two, while the in-form Harry Brook holed out for eight. Jos Buttler gave England fans hope with 40 from 21 balls but his dismissal, caught and bowled off Mitchell Santner, effectively ended his side's hopes. They were bowled out for 128 in the 19th over with leg-spinner Ish Sodhi taking 3-33 and seamer Kyle Jamieson an excellent 3-23 on his return from a back injury. Earlier, Allen hit six sixes and four fours in a stunning knock, while New Zealand's innings was given further impetuous by Glenn Phillips' 69 from 34 balls. The result means the four-match series heads to the finale on Tuesday at Trent Bridge with the outcome to be decided. What the two captains said:

It's been a long summer, lots of cricket, I expect those types of pitches and it's been a good challenge with the bat." New Zealand captain Tim Southee, speaking on BBC One: "We asked for a better performance in all three areas and that was the kind of performance you expect to see when we play. Flintoff, 45, was injured in December at the motoring TV show's test track at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. He was seen with the England team during their one-day international with New Zealand at Cardiff on Friday. Filming of the 34th series of the BBC show was suspended pending a health and safety review into the incident. Flintoff was not working with England in a formal capacity but was invited to be around the team. The former all-rounder, who had visible scars on his face and tape on his nose, wore a bucket hat and dark glasses as he led fielding drills with the England players at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens. He was then seen sat on the England balcony during the New Zealand innings, with the visitors going on to complete a dominant eight-wicket victory. England captain Jos Buttler said it was "great" to have Flintoff around the squad. "He's obviously an England legend and it's just nice to have him around the group," Buttler said. "He's not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe. "A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he's settled in really well. It's great to have him with us. Just for this series." Following the accident on 13 December, Flintoff received medical care at the scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment. In March, the BBC apologised to Flintoff for his injuries and said it would continue to support him during his recovery. Flintoff retired from cricket in 2009 having played 79 Tests, 141 one-day internationals and seven T20s for England. He played a key role in England's Ashes successes of 2005 and 2009, and was captain between 2006 and 2007. England win by 181 runsBen Stokes clobbered the highest score by an England batter in a one-day international in a 181-run trouncing of New Zealand at The Kia Oval. Malan, in prolific form before the World Cup starting in India next month, stroked 127 from 114 balls. That led England to 311-9, a total the bedraggled Black Caps never threatened. Off-spinner Moeen Ali claimed 4-50 as New Zealand were bowled out for 211 to give England victory by 100 runs. England take the series 3-1 in what is their last meaningful action before their defence of the World Cup. "Trying to break into this England white ball team you have to either be a freak or consistent. I've tried to be as consistent as I can be with the bat. I was gutted in the last game to get out when I looked to get a big score. So it was fantastic to back it up and contribute to a win. "Now I'm extremely excited to go the World Cup. it's a dream come true - if selected. It's a dream to play for England, let alone to be potentially going to a World Cup." England captain Jos Buttler to BBC's Test Match Special: "Absolutely, we've moved on from the first game, it's been nice to get that progression and get that series win. Batting display: "It cements our style of play and gets that win. Malan was fantastic and to get that 100, we put that pressure on. Everyone who batted impacted the game and got us up to that score. Jason Roy has not played competitively since the final of The Hundred on 27th AugustOpener Jason Roy should remain in England's World Cup squad despite not taking part in the series against New Zealand, according to James Anderson. Roy missed the 3-1 one-day series win with back spasms and may face Ireland next week in order to show his fitness. Harry Brook did not push his claim in Roy's absence, with scores of 25, two and 10. "If Roy is not fit, I'm sure Brook will replace him but if Roy is fit, he definitely goes," said Anderson. Roy, who was in the England team who won the World Cup in 2019, was in August named in a squad of 15 that selector Luke Wright said would defend the trophy in India in October and November. However, since then, captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott have said there could be changes, with the squad set to be finalised next week. After missing the first three matches of the series against New Zealand, Roy was part of the England warm-up before the final game at Lord's on Friday. Brook wasn't in that initial squad and he's not done anything to make me think he has to go." England play in the opening match of the World Cup against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on 5 October; their final squad has to be named by 28 September. "It allows us time to gather information," Buttler told Test Match Special. "When games are going on, it's a bit hard to know exactly where people are. Now the series is finished, it allows us to work out where everyone is at, or how we need to use that Ireland series. It will take a little bit of time." Roy could be part of the first match against Ireland at Headingley on Wednesday.

Zak Crawley will captain England in only his fourth ODIZak Crawley says he wants to "lead from the front" when he captains England for the first time in the one-day series against Ireland. With almost the entire World Cup squad rested, Crawley takes charge of a group containing four uncapped players. Joe Root is set to play in the opener to the three-match series, on his home ground of Headingley on Wednesday. "If I can get runs and field well, that will help my captaincy a lot. That's definitely on my mind," said Crawley. Kent opening batter Crawley, 25, has played 39 Tests for England but has not broken into a very strong white-ball team who are world champions in both limited-overs formats. His only previous three one-day caps came against Pakistan in 2021 as part of an entirely new squad after the initial party was ruled out because of a Covid outbreak. Now he is charge of a party containing the uncapped quartet of Derbyshire pace bowler George Scrimshaw, Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, Warwickshire batter Sam Hain and Lancashire left-arm spinner Tom Hartley. "To have him in the side as a batsman and former captain is going to be tremendously useful for me and the team," said Crawley. "No-one works harder than Joe, that's why he's the best. We all try to emulate him as much as we can. He's a great person to learn from and a role model for us all." Ireland were beaten by 10 wickets when they met England in a one-off Test at Lord's in June. They have not played any ODI cricket since failing to reach the World Cup at the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in July. They did, however, win their last ODI against England, the final match of England's 2-1 series win played under Covid restrictions in 2020. "Everyone is really buzzing to get out there and show what they are capable of," said Ireland captain Paul Stirling. "England are such a strong team. There is a reason why they are one of the best teams in the world. It's a good opportunity for us."
