England squads for Sri Lanka
i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30212624.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_GettyImages-1469215060.jpg Heather Knight T20: Heather Knight (captain), Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Lauren Filer, Mahika Gaur, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Freya Kemp, Issy Wong, Danielle Wyatt. ODI: Heather Knight (captain) Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Lauren Filer, Mahika Gaur, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Emma Lamb, Nat Sciver-Brunt. Gaur, who played international cricket for United Arab Emirates aged 12, played two T20s against Australia A in June and has impressed in domestic cricket with her swing and bounce. She took five wickets in the Charlotte Edwards Cup as Thunder reached finals day, before claiming six victims in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. The 6ft bowler has also taken two wickets for Manchester Originals in The Hundred and has the second-best economy rate for a pace bowler in the women's competition this year. Heath, who may play as a specialist batter in the middle order, played in all seven games for England A this summer, scoring 88 in the red-ball warm-up against Australia's full side and 150 across the six white-ball A matches. The right-hander was part of the Northern Diamonds side that won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2022 and currently has the best strike-rate of any player to face more than 30 balls in the Women's Hundred this summer at 184.85. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article28530439.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_GettyImages-1203551931.jpgJon LewisHead coach Jon Lewis said: "Mahika is a very exciting talent. Left-arm swing bowlers of over six-foot tall are unique in women's cricket. Mahika has shown consistently this summer that she is a threat with the new ball and we are excited to see how she performs at international level. "Bess is an all-action cricketer who impacts games and is a great fit for us and how we want to play. She impressed in the A team games against Australia and she also provides cover for Amy Jones with the gloves." Ecclestone, who is the number-one ranked bowler in T20s and ODIs, and opening batter Dunkley, who has struggled for form this summer, will miss all six matches as England control workloads. Sciver-Brunt, who is managing a knee injury, will miss the T20 series, with Wyatt missing the ODI games. There is a recall to the T20 squad for all-rounder Freya Kemp, despite her struggles in The Hundred, and opening batter Emma Lamb also returns to the ODI fold having been left out of the Ashes squad. Pace bowler Lauren Filer is in both squads after impressing during the Ashes, while Danielle Gibson may make her ODI debut. Issy Wong, who was left out of Birmingham Phoenix's squad for their game against Southern Brave on Wednesday to work on her "bowling mechanics", is in the T20 squad. Lewis added: "We have named a squad with a good blend of youth and experience and see this as an important series to test the depth of our playing pool. "With a [T20] World Cup coming up next year [in Bangladesh in September], it's imperative we develop the squad and players can gain international caps and experience." England have never hosted Sri Lanka in a bilateral series before, only playing them in England in an ODI during the 2017 World Cup and in T20s during the 2009 World Cup and 2022 Commonwealth Games. The six matches bring to an end England's home summer and follow a dramatic drawn Ashes series against Australia. Jon Lewis' side were 6-0 down after the Test and opening T20 but levelled at 6-6 before Australia retained the Ashes with a win in the second ODI. England won the T20 and ODI legs to inflict first bilateral series defeats on Australia in each format since 2017 and 2013 respectively. Schedule

England v Sri Lanka: Heather Knight challenges hosts to refine skills in T20 and one-day series'..By Callum Matthews, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/746C/production/_130940892_gettyimages-1553992167.jpgEngland captain Heather Knight has challenged her side to use the T20 and one-day series' against Sri Lanka as an opportunity to refine their skillsets. England won both white-ball series' against Australia in July and will be expected to beat Sri Lanka, who are eighth in the world in the two formats. "In terms of skill execution we can be a lot better," Knight told BBC Sport. The three-match T20 series starts in Hove on Thursday, before three one-day internationals from 9th September. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/16B56/production/_130941039_gettyimages-1538088813.jpgKnight added: "We weren't perfect in the Ashes, which is completely fine - you don't expect perfection. "But we can continue to shift things forward, particularly in terms of the bowling and the skill execution at the end of the innings when batters are going. We've got a chance to improve that. "With the bat, T20 has been our strongest format and the length of 50 overs and a few younger players, who haven't played a huge amount of 50-over cricket, makes things harder. But those guys get an opportunity to develop their game and how they find a tempo with that. "There are certainly skill improvements we can make to keep improving as a side and hopefully we can keep doing that on the pitch and in the work that goes on in the nets as well."

England all-rounder Alice Capsey on Sky Sports: "It's really nice to be back with the group, a bit of a different group but always good to pull on the shirt. "Bess [Heath] knows a lot of the girls and Mahika [Gaur] is really exciting. Hopefully she goes out and gets a few poles early. "It was skidding on out there. I had to take time to assess what the pitch was doing and the pace of it but once you got in, it was a lot easier. "I was just trying to keep it simple and keep to my strengths. "It's under lights, we'll have to bowl well but hopefully we can get over the line." Sri Lanka - 55-3 (6 overs) Gunaratne 17 not out, Athapaththu 15, De Silva 18, Gaur 1-16, Dean 1-6
England win by 12 runs DLS method...
Player of the match, England all-rounder Capsey: "It took a couple of balls to get used to the pace of the pitch then we realised it was skidding on and just tried to hit the pockets as hard as possible. "The messaging from [coach] Jon Lewis and Heather Knight has been pretty clear about how I go about my game. "They've given me the freedom to do it my way and put pressure on the bowlers form ball one, really."
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "I'm not worried about the team performance, there were positives in the batting and we look forward to playing good cricket in the next two games. "We tried our best, our bowling line-up struggled to grip the ball in wet conditions and the cold weather, Sri Lanka is not normally like this."
Former England spinner Alex Hartley on Test Match Special: "Alice Capsey could be as good as Nat Sciver-Brunt. She hits it as well as her. For 19, she is an incredible cricketer."
Next Match is: Saturday September 2nd - 2nd T20, Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford - 2.30pm

Saturday 2nd September 2023 - Women's International Twenty20Match - at The Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford - Sri Lanka Women won the toss and decided to field.
England - 104 all out (18 overs) Dean 34, Knight 14, Priyadharshani 2-16
Sri Lanka - 110-2 (13.2 overs) Athapaththu 55, Hars**tha 30 not out
Sri Lanka Women win by 8 wickets
England slumped to their first defeat by Sri Lanka in T20 internationals as the visitors levelled the series with an eight-wicket win at Chelmsford.
England collapsed to 104 all out off 18 overs with Sri Lanka's superb spinners taking eight of the 10 wickets.
Charlie Dean's 34 was the only score of more than 20 in England's innings.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu then hit an entertaining 55 from 31 balls as her side reached their target with 40 balls to spare.
Athapaththu was dismissed by Alice Capsey with 26 runs still required but Hars**tha Madavi and Vishmi Gunaratne calmly completed the chase.
Sri Lanka were understandably jubilant in celebration, Hars**tha raising her arms aloft as she sealed the winning runs with a six off Kate Cross.
England opener Danni Wyatt was bowled in the first over to spark a dismal collapse that saw England stutter to 51-6 at the halfway mark, a stark contrast to the 186-4 that they posted in the first T20 at Hove on Thursday.
The series decider takes place at Derby on Wednesday.
What the two captains said:
England captain Heather Knight: "Sri Lanka were outstanding. They came out and bowled much better than they did the other night, so credit to them. And then Chamari came out and does what she can do, which is be aggressive and take the game on.
"We had an inexperienced side and at times it showed. And it showed when you are off in international cricket you can get humbled.
"Issy has been struggling a little bit for rhythm but she had a few good sessions. Finding where she is at is important and in international cricket that is in the middle, not just bowling in the nets.
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "I'm really happy about my team's performance.
"We learned a lot of things from the last game and we executed all the right plans here.
"As a captain, as a team, this is huge for us. This is huge for women's cricket in Sri Lanka."

Sophie Ecclestone: England spinner has surgery on dislocated shoulder..

The 24-year-old was hurt in the warm-up for Manchester Originals' final match of The Hundred last month and taken to hospital. She was subsequently ruled out of the Big Bash League in Australia. Ecclestone had already been rested for the ongoing series against Sri Lanka, but England hope she will be fit for a planned tour to India in December. England play their third and final T20 international against Sri Lanka in Derby on Wednesday, before three one-day matches in a series concluding on 14th September. Ecclestone, the number-one ranked bowler in one-day and T20 internationals, took 10 wickets in the Test against Australia in June, followed by 10 wickets across both white-ball formats as the Ashes series was drawn. She captained the Originals in The Hundred and also took seven wickets in their campaign as they missed out on qualifying for the knockouts. Meanwhile, Lauren Bell has been ruled out of the remainder of the Sri Lanka series as she continues her recovery from illness. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/18446/production/_130989399_gettyimages-1540461459.jpg

The TeamsEngland: Danni Wyatt, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Heather Knight (C), Amy Jones (WK), Freya Kemp, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Charlie Dean, Kate Cross, Mahika Gaur. Sri Lanka: Chamari Athapaththu (C), Anushka Sanjeewani (WK), Hars**tha Madavi, Vishmi Gunaratne, Hasini Perera, Nilakshi de Silva, Kavisha Dilhari, Inoka Ranaweera, Sugandika Kumari, Udeshika Prabodhani, Inoshi Priyadharshani. England captain Heather Knight: "We'd have done the same but we're batting and it's a chance to put things right from the other day. "We've made one change. Mahika Gaur comes back in to take the new ball. It gives us that different angle and a bit o bounce as well so we're excited to see how she goes in her second game. "The girls have trained brilliantly. Obviously we're disappointed in the other day but it's important that we don't dwell on it too much. "We're a young side, we've got a lot of scope to improve." Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "I'm really confident about my bowling unit so we decided to bowl first. "I'm really pleased with how my team performed [in the second T20], we bounced back at the right time so that's really good for us. "We have to play proper cricket today."

WEDNESDAY 6th SEPTEMBER 2023 - WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL TWENTY20 MATCH - At The Incora County Ground, Derby - Sri Lanka Women won the toss and decided to field.
England 116 all out

Sri Lanka Women win by 7 wicketsichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/17B92/production/_131007179_sl.jpgEngland captain Heather Knight: "They came out with a clear plan to bowl a lot of spin. "I think it's identified a few areas where we need to be better. We learn from them and improve. "We played a young-ish team but that's no excuse. We felt like we had enough on the park to be successful but we've been a little bit off, it's fair to admit that. "We haven't quite been at our best and we've been punished by Sri Lanka. "A few batters, including myself, got starts today and didn't go on. It's having that mentality to go on and go big. In a T20 that can win you the game. "We can certainly get better playing spin, we have to adapt and get better at that. "Resting players gives us the chance to give others opportunities and sometimes we want to do that in series rather than World Cups. It's a risk we took." Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "I'm really happy about my performance and the team's performance. "The last couple of months, I've worked hard in the nets and in the last two series in India and Bangladesh, we've performed well so we wanted to continue that in this series as well. "Finally, we've won, that's really good for us so I hope we can continue this form in the ODIs as well. "The bowling have done a really good job today and in the whole tournament. "We always talk about positive things in our dressing room, never negatives and we executed our plans - that's why we won. "I think we can be a good team in the future."

Sri Lanka - 106 all out (30.2 overs) Hars**tha 35, Gaur 3-26, Glenn 3-20, Filer 3-27

England Women win by 7 wicketsichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/7304/production/_131044492_998f042f807283818588e704de8e9b39d9ea60af.jpgEngland bounced back from their shock T20 series defeat by hammering Sri Lanka in the first one-day international at Chester-le-Street. Pace bowlers Mahika Gaur and Lauren Filer, both making their ODI debuts, were impressive in picking up three wickets apiece as Sri Lanka were knocked over for only 106. Leg-spinner Sarah Glenn also claimed 3-20, while wicketkeeper Amy Jones pouched five catches - an England women's record. England struggled with the bat during the T20 series, but made no mistake when faced with such a modest target. Tammy Beaumont made 32 and Emma Lamb 27, while Maia Bouchier, England's third debutant, hit the winning runs in her 17 not out. England completed their seven-wicket win in only 18 overs and can wrap up the series with victory in the second ODI at Northampton on Tuesday. England captain Heather Knight: "I am really pleased. It was a good toss to win because it wobbled about a bit early on. The way the bowlers bowled and made the most of it was outstanding. "Mahika bowled some pretty magic balls and is a really exciting talent. Lauren Filer in the middle too, she is always a crowd favourite and gets everyone up and about. It was nice to get back to winning ways. "We will see some rotation, we've got a big squad and Mahika is only 17 too. She's exciting but we want to look after her as well." Player of the match Mahika Gaur: "It was a great day, I really enjoyed myself out there and it was good to get a win as well. "It's about bowling your best ball for longer. I've not played much 50-over cricket but I think it's good for the bowlers as the batters don't go as hard at you. "I've had the conversation with Heather and the coaches - they've told me to do what I do best, swinging it in." Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "A tough day at the office. T20 is a different format, Mahika and Kate Cross bowled well in the first hour. We didn't handle that pressure, we needed 250 or 260 on this pitch. "We have to talk about positive things - but we have to improve our batting. Patience is important, but I think we can bounce back and play really good cricket."

England v Sri Lanka: Rain denies home side chance of ODI series win in Northampton..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/15438/production/_131069078_gettyimages-1676082508.jpgEngland were thwarted by rain in their attempt to clinch the one-day international series against Sri Lanka. Leading the three-match series 1-0, the hosts had reduced Sri Lanka to 106-9 when the heavens opened in Northampton and the match was abandoned. Captain Chamari Athapaththu hit a run-a-ball 34 for the tourists, but after she was trapped lbw by Charlie Dean the innings unravelled. Dean took 2-12 as Sri Lanka, from 53-2, lost seven wickets for 53 runs. The start was delayed by half an hour because of rain and wet weather returned after 30.5 overs of the tourists' innings, with the match officially abandoned at 5.10pm. Prior to that, England's bowlers performed well, withstanding the early onslaught from Athapaththu before squeezing the Sri Lanka middle order once the skipper was dismissed. Off-spinner Dean was the pick of the bowlers but seamer Lauren Filer and all-rounder Alice Davidson-Richards also took two wickets apiece, while Kate Cross and Sarah Glenn chipped in as well. "It's frustrating that we got ourselves into a really great position and for it to then rain," said Davidson-Richards. The teams will now head to Leicester for the third and final ODI of the series on Thursday.

At a much brighter-looking Leicester, Chamari Athapaththu wins the toss and chooses to have a bowl - unsurprising, given the conditions and the delays. We will have 31 overs a side, with one bowler able to bowl seven overs and the rest able to bowl six. Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu on Sky Sports: "I have been very proud of my bowling unit and I think it will be a good day for them today. "I think a shorter game helps us because we played such good cricket in the T20 series." England stand-in skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt on Sky Sports: "I was planning to bowl! Bess Heath comes in to make her debut and she is an exciting player so we are excited to see her. "100 caps for myself is really special, and now I have to captain as well. Lauren Winfield-Hill gave me a special cap and I made my debut alongside her so that was a nice moment. "I think the young bowlers are excited. Mahika Gaur and Lauren Filer are exciting bowlers and we have some young batters with a lot of talent. After the hosts slipped to 18-2, Sciver-Brunt and Bouchier led an emphatic recovery by adding 193 together from just 121 balls - England's highest ODI partnership against Sri Lanka. Sciver-Brunt, standing in as captain in the absence of the unwell Heather Knight, smashed her third ODI century in her last four innings before falling for 120 off just 73 deliveries. Sri Lanka buckled under the pressure of attempting to pull off their highest ODI chase, with England bouncing back strongly from their shock T20 series defeat. England's player of the match, and player of the summer, Nat Sciver-Brunt: "I'm really happy to have batted the way I did and continue that form I had against Australia. "When we play so much cricket, it's just about making sure the body and mind are right and that's what I did during my break [from the T20 series]. I was definitely fully switched on by the time it came to these games. "The plan is to be back bowling by the India series in December. The decision not to bowl post-Ashes was just about giving the body a rest more than anything but I'm looking forward to getting back into it. I want to influence games in all departments. "It's been brilliant to see the young players come in and make such an impact in their first outings. Lauren Filer's pace is so exciting and we want to harness that as much as possible." Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "Tough conditions and tough day the office against the number two team in the world. We won in the T20s but not in the ODIs. We need to impove our batting, shot selection and be patient in this format. We can't blame the conditions and have to be fearless every time. "We have a few youngsters and our setup is really good. I hope we can be a good team in the future. The youngsters improve a lot and hope they become good cricketers in the future. Personally, I love the pressure and handle that in a fearless way. I enjoy my time in the middle every time." England's player of the series Lauren Filer, who finished with eight wickets in the three matches, said: "It's been a whirlwind of summer and nice to finish it off here today. I think using the hardness of the new ball, bowling attacking lines and getting the batters driving is something I've added to my armoury. "Mahika Gaur is a great bowler and offers left arm and skill. It's nice to have someone at the other end tying the runs up. Just bowling quick for me is not enough so I'm working on variations and keep improving."
