Despite an improved last 15 minutes, there is no escaping the fact this was a second consecutive shocking performance by Rovers.
More poor tactical choices by Barton was also a contributing factor.
The ref also had a shocker with some truly poor decisions, although it is fair to say he was not the primary reason we lost.
While it's still early days, a LOT of work to be done if we're to challenge even for a top ten finish.

Our non scoring strikers are a big concern. Two wins at home in 2023 is so disappointing.

Bartons current strategy isnt really working. But early days and guess you do learn more from a loss.

Thought were some positives today, Hunt, Crama, Brown & Vale all playing well I thought, Negatives, we are one dimensional, we hardly ever switch up plays, we knock the ball along the back four, into the middle, back to the back four, back to keeper for a massive punt up field, so predictable,70% possession with only 20% of that attacking, the opposition must love playing us, what’s that now? 1 win out of last 12 home matches, well done Barton.

Stats: BRFC 1 Wycombe 2 - 70% - 30% - Shots 12-12 - On Target 1-5 - Corners 7-3 - Referee: Lee Swaby
Bristol Rovers player ratings v Wycombe as Gas handed second consecutive defeat..by Daniel Hargraves
Matt Cox - 6 Will be disappointed that his wait for a clean sheet goes on. Made one great save early in the second half and once again showed composure on the ball.
Jack Hunt - 6 (Harvey Vale 78') The right-back looked to contribute on his Rovers debut and got forward on plenty of occasions. There were some good touches but, from a team perspective, not a debut to remember given the defeat. Did enough to keep his shirt.
James Wilson - 5 Rovers would've wanted an added calmness from the experienced defender upon his return and they got that in spells. His experience does help the side but the big question mark will come regarding the marking for the first Wycombe goal as Joe Low was allowed a free run on goal to plant his header. Not the return to action he would've wanted.
Tristan Crama - 6 An assist coming from a square-ball across goal? You don't see that often from a centre-back but Rovers were chasing the game as the Frenchman set up Harvey Vale and was also unlucky not to score in added time.
Like with Wilson, there will be question marks regarding marking for Low's goal but the defender showed similar composure to his previous performances and looked determined to secure Rovers a point.
George Friend - 6 (Josh Grant 65') A lively first appearance in blue-and-white quarters for the veteran defender. Was happy to get himself forward and looked to put crosses into the area whilst also making some vital interceptions and touches. His fitness will have to be managed but the left-back tried to make an impact in a difficult game.
Sam Finley - 5 (Antony Evans 78') Some cute touches and passes but will be disappointed with some of his giveaways.
Grant Ward - 6 (Lamare Bogarde 65') Again, some solid work in the middle with good interceptions and passes but couldn't take the game by the scruff of the neck as he has done on occasion this season.
Luke Thomas - 6 As he always has this season, the winger showed tenacity but really struggled to make an impact in the final third, as was the case for his fellow attackers.
Scott Sinclair - 5 (John Marquis 65') The winger tried his best and beat his defender on numerous occasions with his pace but, like with his fellow forwards, struggled to break down a resolute Wycombe.
Aaron Collins - 5 Not the afternoon the forward would have wanted as he still looks for his first goal of the season. It doesn't appear as though Collins is playing with much confidence as there were few occasion where he either took his man on or played a forward ball. The quality is there and once that first goal comes, there's little doubt he'll be flying.
Jevani Brown - 6 The forward got Rovers man of the match upon his return to the side and that's justified, he looked the most dangerous and most likely to architect a big moment. Hit the woodwork in the first half and was involved in every move forward. Has to keep his place now.
Substitutes: Josh Grant (65') - 5 Came on with Rovers chasing the game. Tried to offer support when needed, minimal impact.
Lamare Bogarde (65') - 5 Gave the ball away for the goal but it did look to be a foul which allows him the benefit of the doubt. Need to watch back.
John Marquis (65') - 5 Came on to make a difference. Didn't get a goal but used his physicality and fresh legs well.
Antony Evans (78') - N/A Came on too late.
Harvey Vale (78') - N/A Scored a consolation goal but no rating for same reason above.

BRFC 1 Wycombe 2
Former Bristol City defender Joe Low played the role of local villain to perfection to put Wycombe on course for a 2-1 victory over lacklustre Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.
The 21-year-old centre-back put the Chairboys ahead after 19 minutes when he rose unchallenged to powerfully nod in Luke Leahy's free-kick, only to be booked for goading the home fans who greeted his celebrations with disdain.
Low, whose father Josh started his career at Rovers, then excelled on the defensive front to frustrate Joey Barton's side who lacked direction but almost equalised after 43 minutes when striker Jevani Brown struck a post from close range.
In contrast, Wanderers attacked with purpose and Leahy twice went close to doubling the lead from long range against his old club but Rovers keeper Matt Cox pulled off excellent saves to deny the midfield playmaker.
The away side suffered a setback when Dale Taylor was carried off on a stretcher following a heavy challenge.
But Matt Bloomfield's visitors stood firm and went further ahead thanks to substitute Garath McCleary's clever finish after 74 minutes.
Chelsea loanee Harvey Vale, 19, gave Rovers hope with a deft finish in the 84th minute shortly after appearing as a substitute.
But Low led the Wycombe resistance and his desperate stoppage-time block to divert Tristan Crama's shot wide ensured a victorious return to Bristol.

Shame about the old Tote End clock.
Great it got refurbished and repaired, and is looking good above the Thatchers End, but as a timepiece it only lasted one game. Stuck on five to eight.

The ironic thing about our goal was it came from one of their players taking a theatrical dive, trying to win a free-kick, which for once wasn't given, and we played on.

Just got back.. Another fab day seeing some of you on the road... It's amazing how many pubs aren't open early doors, or have fallen by the wayside only to be picked up by cafés serving the juice of the apple from North St or further afield !? Or any tipple you prefer... Bristol Lager still makes me chuckle! Great again bumping into some of you reprobates! Do the eye thingy again....! ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) Anyhoos, onto less important matters.. If JAB was a cat, he's used up 2 of his 9 lives this season... He farts about with the defence personnel (why no CT?) and the unit are culpable for our downfall, even though there were some good individual performances, they let themselves down for conceding two goals - it should have been more - but in truth we done no where near enough to win the match. JAB says they're the most talented he's ever managed (he would say that), and the best is yet to come from goalscorer Vale and the squad (he would say that), and maybe he is correct, but the Achilles heel of playing stalwart third division physical, non compromising, direct football clubs with minimal resources and much smaller attendances, corporate hospitality and pr profile he again is left wanting.....I say bring back Mangan (I would say that!). Jev Brown hit outside of post. He was awarded m o m ..... personally I thought Hunt had the best game. Aaron dithered again. Luke was being doubled up on with little support until Crama/Evans arrived on his side, because he switched a few times. Ok, Wilson looking good, he could ping a ball behind Wyscum defence, but it just wasn't quite accurate enough, very decent trys though. And Hunt was very decent in wing play. Friend I liked first half when we were playing well, a big physical unit that 'made' himself known too well with dishing out a dead leg too far by yellow. But I thought faded second half and rightly subbed. A couple of average crosses. Brings us on to Fins.... just not for me atm. Has he lost his mojo? Much like Ward? We were struggling with our mid in second half, the subs breathed a bit of fresh air and we scored with several players bearing down on goal, first time I'm saying it, well done Vale! (don't normally cheer on Port Vale) Could have scored v Charlton, but away you go.... first league goal v Wycombe. So we go back to the training ground to practice how to play on pitches that haven't been watered. Shame it wasn't evening kick off - it p!ssed down - and thundery lightning - perhaps after 2-0 down it would've been our turn to call the match off and chin a few of them in the car park? But you know what? I don't think it would matter. We just aren't slick enough ATM and got what we deserved....zilch. Still, nice cider though..... UptheGas!

Too many players on the books with the issue of how do you keep them all happy. Half the side hadn’t played together yesterday. After bemoaning the inability to re-sign Connor last season and after two dominant performances he’s sitting on the bench. I can understand what Barton is trying to do but frankly we move the ball too slowly with players in the second and final thirds too static forcing the ball being moved square and backwards all the time. 60% possession means absolutely nothing if you aren’t winning games on the back of it. On the JCH issue it would be a waste of time having here, it wouldn’t take long for him to get as pissed off as Collins currently is trying to polish the turd in terms of opportunities to score are at the moment.

Mustering a barn storming 1 shot on target.

You really think Barton will go 4 4 2. He has said before it's old school football.
One suspects he will be the tinkerman for next 10 games.

Damn decent post and observation. I'd only add, 9/10 times, our final ball/pass/cross/shot is lacking in quality. Yesterday our defenders couldn't defend the simple. Which was most of our problems last season. JAB is making the same mistakes !

Watched on ifollow and agree with your match report 100%. Listening to the commentators Brookman & Co, when Friend got stuck in and dished out the dead leg, they screamed he never touched him!, yet was as clear as day on ifollow, it was as cynical a foul as they come, if I was Brookman & Co I would be sat in the press box watching on an ipad or similar as clearly they cannot see what is actually going on, on the pitch.
