Particularly insane because he wasn't actually that good was he? From what I can gather, he showed promise but at the moment isn't anywhere near championship, let alone PL, level. I remember Matt Lockwood having a considerably larger impact, and he was a free transfer from QPR. What I find interesting is that if you look at a lot of these young players at top clubs is how few games they have actually played by the time they are in their mid-20s. Lingard played 149 games for United over a ten-year period, which works out at around 15 games a season. In his loan spells, he never played more than 20 games for a single team. Loftus-Cheek played 109 games for Chelsea in a 9-year period. An average of 12 games a season. Hudson Odoi played 72 games for Chelsea in a five-year period. An average of 14 games a season. Ross Barkley played 58 games for Chelsea in a four-year period. An average of 15 games a season. Presumably these stats also include substitute appearances, along with those in meaningless domestic and international cup games? It's now quite common in the PL and other top European leagues for players to reach their late 20s and to have fewer than 200 appearances for their club. If Vale has any ambition, he will be looking to leave ASAP. Lockwood was one of my favorite players back then,I will never forget that cross against Brentford in 98. I thought Vale did ok,but nothing more.Given that really his ability right now is of L1 level.I think he should jump at the chance of making £50k plus a week in a level probably of a lower standard then he played here last season. Saying that,he probably is not far off being a millionaire already given what his Chelsea wages must be currently. Never understood why we let Lockwood leave for a team in the division below? Struggle to believe this was a 'nearer to London' thing, as I believe he ended his career in Scotland? Allegedly came close to joining PL teams on several occasions. Quite liked Challis also. LB has tended to be a problem position for us. If Vale has any ambition and self-respect, he will turn this down and push for a move to a championship side. Unfortunately too few players have this mentality and will take the easy money. The game has gone utterly mad. Did you see that Bogarde, who couldn't get in our first team, was being linked with a 4m move to Southampton? Chelsea's Armando Borja, who has a grand total of 18 goals in almost 100 appearances, including in the Dutch farmer league, is apparently worth 30m of somebody's money.

Always seems to be the defenders... Jacobson for me has slightly over-achieved in his career. When with us, I had him down as a mid-table L2 player, and he has instead turned into a L1 mid-table player, even winning promotion from L1 with the rain cheats. Kev Austin also won promotion from L1 with Swansea, despite not pulling up trees with us. Didn't Barratt also do this with Southend?

Also a lesson in there about persevering with young players when they make mistakes, especially defenders. To take one example, Kilgour showed what he was capable of playing alongside an experienced Tony Craig and under the tutelage of a manager who was formerly a defender. I also think letting Hoole leave was a mistake. Put the player in the right context and framework and they will look a completely different player.

[ I really liked Austin in his spell here despite thinking he was an average to poor journeyman before he signed. An absolute tryer who gave it everything whilst wearing our shirt and I was really sorry when he moved on. My favourite memory is an away game at Whaddon Road where he was up against Martin Devaney who was a decent player. Devaney repeatedly tried to go round him, big Kev takes two steps to the left and it is as if Devaney has to run to Hereford to get past. A colossal performance from our colossus. Barratt was awful for us though despite being a shrimpers legend. Always seemed to have a German war helmet on when heading the ball, and spent large amounts of time drilling for oil with his arse any time he came up against anyone with pace. We have had some good no nonsense CHs in the 50+ years I’ve been watching us. Billy Clark, Mark McCrystal, Peter Aitken and Vaughan Jones are ones I’d pick out. Taylor Moore could be another in this mould

I remember that team as utter dross and as only staying in the football league because of Halifax - however, it had some decent players - Ijah Anderson, Astafjevs, Bryant, Foster. Foster incidentally is another one - later went on to get promotions from both L2 and L1 with S***thorpe and Doncaster.

Foster was an excellent player imho. Far more ability than the likes of Austin, McCrystal etc and incredibly consistent. His partnership with Tillson is as good as any I’ve seen in my 54 yrs of watching us
