United had a really good start in the game, we didn't. We used the time and adapted well. We were outstanding, but we had to finish the game off and we didn't. "If you are only one goal up, it's clear your opponent is there. We lose it in the end. I cannot ask for more. The boys gave everything. "Our decision-making was not great. You have to accept the result. They deserve to go to the next round. It was a period in the second half when we should have finished it, but we didn't and we know they could come back. "I think my boys showed incredible character again. Super effort again. Everybody showed it. You cannot compare our season to United's, with the amount of games. It's fine, we deal with it. "Now the boys go on international duty. We hope they come back healthy. Lucho [Luis Diaz] felt his groin, Darwin [Nunez] a hamstring. Cody [Gakpo] twisted his ankle. They play again in four or five days, it's crazy. "Hopefully we will finish the season in style. I really feel for our people. In a few weeks, we come again and we give it another try. "How could I doubt the character of my boys? I don't. We use the situation and it's game over. We didn't use it and they ran through. I'm still proud of what I saw today. The boys have to recover and we will go for everything after the international break." Jurgen Klopp's substitute complaint
With time ticking down yesterday and his side flagging as the number of games they have played and the number of injuries they have had to cope with started to catch up with them, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp went to use another substitute. He had already used five but he wanted to use the extra time period to freshen up even more, as he had in the EFL Cup final against Chelsea last month. Except he couldn't. He was reminded that, unlike the EFL Cup and European club competitions, clubs are not given a sixth substitute in extra-time in the FA Cup. “I have no clue why the FA make it so you cannot change a sixth player in extra-time,” Klopp told my BBC colleague John Murray “I was told before the game but I forgot. “All other competitions have six but the FA thought ‘we must make it a little bit harder’.”

David James: Former England goalkeeper scores winner in Sunday League game..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/05/26/11/71442119-12127751-image-a-60_1685097957670.jpgEx-England goalkeeper David James came out of retirement at the age of 53 to score the winning goal for a title-chasing Sunday League side. James, who made over 1000 career appearances, played a one-off game for AFC Hutwood and scored a 25-yard free-kick to give them a 2-1 victory. He pulled on his shorts as a gesture of goodwill after the Sunday league side filled a donation box with boots. "I kept asking the manager to take me off," James told BBC Radio Solent. "Fortunately he didn't as we got a free-kick which I smashed goal bound. It hit the post, then hit the goalkeeper and went in." The former Liverpool, Manchester City and Portsmouth stopper played the first half in goal and then in the outfield after the break in the City of Southampton Sunday FL Division One game against Madeinheath United. He never scored in his professional career which spanned more than 25 years. James is an ambassador for energy company Utilita's Football Rebooted initiative and was only too happy to help when Hutwood asked on social media if he was interested in getting some game time. The campaign aims to provide football boots for those who cannot afford them. "The idea of the campaign is to keep boots in the community," James added. "We want people to have them that want to take part in football but maybe can't afford them. The aim is for anyone to be able to play, not matter who you are."

Liverpool and Bayern Munich trying to appoint Xabi Alonso, says Uli Hoeness..

Spaniard Alonso, a former player of both clubs, is on the brink of guiding Bayer Leverkusen to their first German Bundesliga title. Bayern and Liverpool are both looking to appoint new managers this summer. "Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it," Hoeness told Ran Sport. "He's proven that he can be a coach for the big time. There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don't have a job or who are on sabbatical. "It's not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things." Thomas Tuchel will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, while Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to step down at Liverpool in January. The Reds are second in the Premier League, level on points with leaders Arsenal. Carlo Ancelotti, the Real Madrid manager, extended his deal with the club until 2026 in December. Alonso spent five years as a player at Real in between his stints at Liverpool and Bayern. Alonso's deal at Leverkusen runs until 2026.

Liverpool appoint new sporting director..Richard Hughes.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5658/live/8a5eb0e0-e6b3-11ee-860f-4b0b053e4cd0.jpgLiverpool's newly appointed sporting director Richard Hughes says it is the "present and future which really excites" him about the club. Hughes will officially take up the role when he leaves his post as Bournemouth’s first-team technical director at the end of the season. Hughes has been headhunted by former Reds sporting director Michael Edwards, who was recently appointed as chief executive of football at FSG, who own Liverpool. Speaking to the club website, he said: "People rightly talk about the rich history this organisation can boast, but it is the present and future which really excites me. Jurgen Klopp is leading an outstanding team and squad and alongside that the commitment to young players and their pathway to the first team is also outstanding. "I am fully aware of the expectations and responsibilities that come with taking this position. It will be my job, working with Michael [Edwards] and leading the football operations team already in place, plus the wider staff at the AXA Training Centre, to make good decisions. "That's really what the job entails: you have to make the kind of good decisions which enhance the prospects of having a team that wins and excites the supporters. It is what Liverpool have done well for a very long time and the benefits are there for everyone to see." Edwards added: "Both Richard and I are aware of the weight of responsibility that comes with working in this capacity for a club such as this. The fact he is excited and energised by the challenge ahead is important. "It is clear to everyone that Jurgen will leave a legacy to build upon and in Richard we have the right person to make the key decisions and offer the leadership to take us forward into a bright future."

The 43-year-old will line up alongside the likes of 2005 Champions League final hero Jerzy Dudek, former talisman Fernando Torres and defensive wall Daniel Agger to take on a team of Ajax legends featuring former Reds Ryan Babel and Jari Litmanen on Saturday, March 23rd. Gerrard will play under his former England national team manager Sven Goran-Eriksson, who will be in the home dugout after being granted his wish following a campaign from Liverpool fans, with the lifelong supporter fulfilling his dream after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article28866160.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-468202068.jpgIn January, the demand for Eriksson to be in the dugout gathered momentum after the former England boss expressed regret at having never coached Liverpool across a decorated career that spanned over 40 years. "My father is still alive and is still a Liverpool supporter, and I'm a Liverpool supporter as well, I've always been," he told Sky News. "So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool, and that will not happen for sure, but I'm still a Liverpool fan." The Dutch giants are the visitors to Merseyside for the latest instalment of the charity match for the LFC Foundation. Recent charity matches with Manchester United and Scottish Premiership giants Celtic helped raise £1.45million for the LFC Foundation. Tickets for the match are no longer available to buy with a sell-out crowd of 61,276 expected inside Anfield tomorrow. John Aldridge, Ian Rush and John Barnes will also be in the dugout while treble-winning goalkeeper Sander Westerveld will also return to L4. The fixture will help raise funds for the LFC Foundation who continue to help change lives daily with various programmes. Sami Hyypia, Maxi Rodriguez, Dirk Kuyt and many more. Ronald de Boer, Siem de Jong and former Arsenal striker Kanu have also been confirmed to line up at Anfield. i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article28870648.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200/0_GettyImages-1248856616.jpg

Real Madrid 'monitoring' Trent Alexander-Arnold transfer chances as contract wait goes on..By Mark Wakefield, Trends Writer.
Latest Liverpool transfer news and gossip as Real Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Trent Alexander-Arnold as they monitor his contract situation at Anfieldi2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article28866986.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-2040211407.jpgTrent Alexander-Arnold is being linked with a shock move away from Liverpool this summer, with Real Madrid reportedly interested. Alexander-Arnold was named Reds vice-captain last summer after the exits of Jordan Henderson and James Milner. Virgil van Dijk was awarded the armband for this season, with Alexander-Arnold being the centre-back's deputy. Alexander-Arnold has struggled with a knee injury that has restricted his game time since the turn of the year. The right-back has missed 12 matches and he has not played since being withdrawn at half-time against Burnley in the Premier League clash back on February 10. Alexander-Arnold has now entered the final 18 months of his contract, which is due to expire in 2025. As a result, there is speculation about the future of the Liverpool academy graduate. According to Spanish news outlet Relevo, Real Madrid are showing an interest in signing Alexander-Arnold. It has been claimed that the La Liga giants are monitoring the 25-year-old's contract situation at Anfield, with a view to making a potential move if a resolution is not found in the coming months. The report claims that Real Madrid are often scouting the market for players who are about to enter the final 12 months of their contract, as will be the case for Alexander-Arnold this summer. It has been stated that the Spanish giants could look to target the versatile defender to strengthen their right-back department which currently has Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez, who are both 32 years old. New sporting director Richard Hughes will likely have Alexander-Arnold's future as one of his priorities when he officially joins Liverpool in the summer following his exit from Bournemouth.

Who is Omar Marmoush? The £42m striker subject of Liverpool 'interest'..By Stephen Killen, Senior Football Writer.
Liverpool and Arsenal are both reportedly interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush in the summer transfer window
i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/article28829842.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/1_omar-marmoush.jpg Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush.Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt attacker Omar Marmoush but face competition from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds have faced competition to keep some of their star players in recent years. Mohamed Salah was subject of a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia as Saudi Pro League holders Al Ittihad registered an interest in the Egyptian. Liverpool rebuffed the interest but Salah has just over 12 months remaining on his deal at Anfield - meaning he could leave on a free in 16 months. In recent weeks, attacker Luis Diaz has become the topic of speculation over his future on Merseyside with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona rumoured to have interest. German news outlet BILD has claimed that Liverpool are among the clubs to have listed the Egyptian. However, the report suggests that they're not alone in having interest as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur - who are said to have had a long-standing interest. It has been claimed that Marmoush has dreams of playing in England and the Premer League. Eintracht sporting director Markus Krosche is said to know of the 25-year-old's intentions of moving to the English top-flight but with his performances this season, his pricetag has increased to €50million (£42m). Marmoush is the top goalscorer for the German club this season with 15 goals and despite intentions from Dino Toppmoller's side to keep the attacker, they will consider selling him if he continues his development.

Liverpool: Reds fans awarded damages by Uefa over Champions League final chaos..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/03/07/10/68416519-11829813-image-a-19_1678183404180.jpgA group of Liverpool fans have been awarded compensation by Uefa after claiming they were injured or left with psychological trauma in chaotic scenes at the 2022 Champions League final. Uefa were found to bear "primary responsibility" for what almost led to a "mass fatality catastrophe" in Paris. Fans were penned in and sprayed with tear gas outside the Stade de France as kick-off was delayed by 36 minutes. On Friday, Uefa said it had agreed "a full and final settlement" with fans. The agreement relates to Liverpool supporters - previous reported as a total of 1,450 claimants - who were represented in a lawsuit by global law company Pogust Goodhead and Liverpool law firm Bingham Long. Both Uefa and the legal teams said the amount of compensation received by the fans would remain confidential. The supporters had "accepted" and "welcomed" the offer, said their legal firms. Liverpool played Real Madrid in May 2022 for the prize of being crowned European champions. Many Reds fans spoke of long queues in the hours leading up to the game, which Liverpool went on to lose 1-0, and a heavy-handed police response to the build-up of supporters unable to enter the Stade de France. Fans were tear-gassed by police, while also being attacked and robbed by local people allowed to congregate nearby. Uefa and French authorities initially blamed ticketless fans for the events. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/03/07/10/68417105-11829813-image-a-24_1678184760623.jpgIn February 2023, the independent report announced it had found Uefa responsible for "chaotic scenes" which "almost led to disaster". The report drew parallels with the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, when 97 Liverpool supporters died at their side's FA Cup semi-final tie with Nottingham Forest after being crushed because of overcrowding. "The parties have agreed the terms of this statement, but that the terms of the settlement will otherwise remain confidential," said Uefa, which organises Champions League matches as the governing body of European football. "The settlement agreement has been made without any admission of liability. "Uefa is pleased to have reached a common position which it is hoped provides closure for the fans." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/03/07/10/68417109-11829813-image-a-25_1678184765845.jpg

Dramatic new Merseyside Derby date resolved with Everton and Liverpool fixtures confirmed..i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article28874224.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Derbyduo230324.jpgThe 244th Merseyside Derby has been rescheduled for Wednesday April 24 (8pm kick-off), avoiding the prospect of Everton facing Liverpool in the final week of the Premier League season. The game at Goodison Park was originally set to be played last Sunday but was postponed because of Liverpool’s FA Cup quarter-final commitments against Manchester United. As the ECHO highlighted last month, the potential for a late showdown between the two rivals from across Stanley Park was a realistic proposition. Joe Thomas wrote: “Premier League planners are now assessing the fixture list for a new date and, with the season entering its final third, spare days are at a premium. Availability is largely dependent on Liverpool’s record in the Europa League. “Should they reach the semi-finals of that competition then just two midweek slots are available. The most likely to be selected is in late April, but until that is confirmed the only other clear possibility is the final week of the campaign.”

Here are some of your replies:
Nathan: Injuries are the only thing that have tainted an almost perfect farewell season for Klopp. With a fully fit squad we would have walked, or maybe relaxed jogged, to a quadruple. Fraser: Drawing several games that Liverpool really should have won. The ones that come to mind are the games against Luton away and Manchester United at home. If we had won either or both of those games, Liverpool would have been well ahead in the title race. I hope those results don't come back to bite us. Colin: VAR. With the title race being so tight, we could end up losing the title because of the mistake made against Tottenham. This wasn't a subjective call - it was a basic error which could decide who wins the title. Robel: With out a shadow of doubt, it's the inconsistency of referee decisions or how VAR was applied. Liverpool should have been at least six points clear at the top. Instead, the league winner is being decided by clear and obvious referee mistakes. Not a good look for the league. I don't think Howard Webb's show is making it any better. Matt: Luis Diaz's finishing. So many games should have been dead and buried long before they were but haven't been because he's so inconsistent in his finishing. Not criticising his effort or endeavour but his goalscoring has got to improve. Toby: Simple. Klopp leaving.

In a statement on the club website, Liverpool say they are "deeply saddened" by his passing who spent 5 years at Anfield and won the league championship & Uefa Cup with the club.
Here are some of your responses:Neil: My first memory of watching football is the 1971 Cup final which we lost to Arsenal 2-1 after extra-time. Larry Lloyd played centre-back and enjoyed a fine game. By the time we returned to Wembley to win the cup in 1974 Larry had fallen down the pecking order and left the club that season. He ended up in a Forest team that proved our nemesis. A fine player indeed! Sue: A fantastic defender and a brilliant character. The game will miss him. Jamie: A true footballing legend who gave his all for the Reds. He'll always be remembered for his fierce dedication on the field, inspiring both team-mates and fans alike. He'll be missed! Jim: What a nice man. Lived a few doors away in Maghull. Good solid centre-half. RIP. Eug: I have no memories of Larry Lloyd in a Liverpool shirt but he was a good player for Forest. Must be good if Brian Clough played him. Unsung hero. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13167/production/_133038187_gettyimages-75873096.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4370/production/_133046271_satgoss.pngLiverpool's favoured target to replace Jurgen Klopp as their next manager is Sporting Lisbon's Portuguese boss Ruben Amorim, after Xabi Alonso announced he was staying at Bayer Leverkusen. Amorim, 39, has a release clause of £12.8m (15m euros) which kicks in at the end of the season. Real Madrid are monitoring Liverpool and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold's situation as the 25-year-old approaches the final 12 months of his contract. Liverpool are interested in Eintracht Frankfurt and Egypt winger Omar Marmoush, 25, should his international team-mate Mohamed Salah, 31, leave Anfield this summer.

FULL-TIME - Liverpool 2-1 Brighton - All over..
Report By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.Liverpool will finish the weekend top of the Premier League after Mohamed Salah fired the winner against Brighton at Anfield before Manchester City and Arsenal drew. The Reds knew a victory against Brighton could prove significant with their title rivals playing each other in Sunday's late kick-off. Liverpool fell behind early on but fought back to win 2-1 and climb above Arsenal - and their stay at the summit was extended when City and the Gunners played out a goalless draw. Liverpool are on 67 points with nine rounds of matches remaining, while Arsenal - who have a superior goal difference - are second on 65 points, with City one point further back in third. Earlier, Brighton striker Danny Welbeck stunned Jurgen Klopp's side by thumping a strike into the top corner with only 87 seconds on the clock. Liverpool responded strongly and began to dominate possession, with Luis Diaz poking home the equaliser from close range before the half-hour mark. Salah, making his first league start since New Year's Day, had missed a host of chances but eventually made one count when he coolly slotted in from Alexis Mac Allister's pass in the 65th minute. The hosts thought they had all but sealed the win when Diaz fired in after 73 minutes but his effort was ruled out by the video assistant referee for a tight offside. Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk came closest to snatching a draw for the visitors, but saw two headers saved by home keeper Caoimhin Kelleher in quick succession. Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana also fired wide just moments after coming on as a substitute late on. Ultimately Salah's strike proved the difference as relieved Reds fans greeted the final whistle with an exuberant celebration. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/fce4/live/4394e710-ef78-11ee-9352-119b8db3e0cd.jpgLiverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC MOTD: "I would have loved to not be 1-0 down, I would love to have been four or five nil up but that's the best we played against De Zerbi's Brighton. "Playing wise it was really good, defending wise, yes always a struggle but there's been games against Brighton we were never close but this time we were calm. That is the first of the last 10, let's keep going." On move for the winner: "That is an unbelievable ball [from Dominik Szoboszlai]. It is the creativity and the quality, seeing that. He sees Macca, his first touch is incredible and then he sees Mo. How wasteful we were at all the other moments it was good we had this genius football moment to finish the game off. "Brighton have incredible quality. That is the measure I have for how good we were today because I really respect them. They had chances, they took more risks all of a sudden and we got slightly tired. "We deserved to win the game. That is what you want and then on top of that it is really cool." Will you watch Manchester City v Arsenal? "We have a booth room and I will watch a bit of it because the traffic is now heavy to get out of the stadium. "We just have to win our games and see where we end up."

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim would consider joining Liverpool, if he was offered the job, but will only make a decision about his future at the end of the season. Tottenham have joined the race to sign 18-year-old Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray, with Liverpool also interested in the England Under-21 international.
