We've arranged a behind closed door game against an Aston Villa 11, to help keep sharp while our 3rd tier campaign is temporarily halted ,due to our international call ups.
Good to see we get along well with Villa, would'nt it be great if Bogarde signed for another Rovers loan next season.

Never got along with Villa, most memorable when we beat them 2-0 at Eastville in 1974,..when…. we were in the same league …ho ho……A time when Villa would have dreamed to have several of our players, not a time like now when we are hoping to have the use of a Villa youngster learning his trade for the remainder of this season and beyond. No disrespect to Bogarde as he is a fine player. But is not easy to reconcile where we are now and where we have been, people like Tom Gorringe and Wael willl never understand what it was like in the 70’s when we were truly a force to be reckoned with. I am glad I lived those times with Rovers as I doubt I will see them again, weekly, playing teams like, West Ham, Wolves, Man U, Notts Forest, Sunderland and Aldershot.

Totally agree with you but to see the full picture you have to look at the clubs that were in the same divisions as Rovers that have now disappeared ,Hereford,York,Stockport. I can remember a pre season friendl against Vill on a tuesday night ( 75 or 76 ?) and I am (almost) certain that there was a 5000 crowd,I also remember a mid season friendly V Stoke who were a top 1st division club and that had a good attendance too, I think Alan Hudson was sent off for a punch up with Frankie Prince....happy days.

Nice to hear some of the old ‘friendly’ chants from the Tote. Got to laugh, good old Roger Malone telling us the reason we are all here today is for the 'soccer' and not the parachutes landing on the centre spot. Also the way he kept on saying Bristol, surely it's easier to say Rovers or City depending who is playing... BRFC finished 1 place above the relegation zone and Aston Villa were promoted in 2nd place and qualified for the Uefa cup. Alan Warboys ended up top scorer with 11, Attendance was 14,035 and this was our only win v Villa in the 16 games we have played them.

Indeed I did laugh, Roger Malone was always ‘awkward’ towards Rovers.

Nice to hear some of the old ‘friendly’ chants from the Tote. I was enjoying the old half time TV ads too. Then Jimmy Savile came on.

What happened as Aston Villa played Bristol Rovers in secret friendly at Bodymoor Heath.. by Ashley PreeceDiego Carlos made his long-awaited return to match action for Aston Villa as Unai Emery’s men were beaten 3-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bristol Rovers at Bodymoor Heath. The Brazilian started alongside Tyrone Mings in defence for Villa with Lucas Digne, Calum Chambers, Ashley Young, Alex Moreno, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins all featuring. Leander Dendoncker also made his playing return after missing Villa’s recent fixtures with a serious hand injury. Villa’s squad was also made up of some under-21s, including goalkeeper James Wright. Villa, meanwhile, went behind on 16 minutes when Rovers’ striker Josh Coburn beat Wright in the Villa goal. Villa centre-back Konsa struck the crossbar with a header prior to that while, in the second half, Rovers extended their lead to make it 3-0 with Ryan Loft and John Marquis both scoring. Young prospect Omari Kellyman - a leading light for Villa’s academy sides this season - pulled a goal back late on. The 17-year-old placed his effort well from the edge of the 18-yard box as the game finished 3-1 in the League One side’s favour, with former Villans Scott Sinclair and Glenn Whelan turning out for Joey Barton's side. Villa also went close as Watkins had an effort saved while Young had his audacious chip cleared off the goal line. Here's the two starting XIs
ASTON VILLA: Wright; Konsa, Diego Carlos, Mings, Digne; A.Young, Dendoncker, Chambers, Alex Moreno; Raikhy, Watkins. BRISTOL ROVERS: Belshaw, Gordon, Gibbons, Connolly, Finley, Evans, McCormick, Sinclair, Macdonald, Loft, Coburn. REFEREE: Andre Marriner.

Calling Nottingham Forest 'NOTTS' is greeted by their fans in the same way as we dislike being called 'BRISTOL'. However, really great times.Recall winning at Stoke when Jason Roberts began with us and Cureton scored a hat trick.Ian Holloway gave away a pen but we won 4-1. Not that long afterwards, they were Prem and we were Conference. We won there the following year as well with Mark Walters( ex Stoke) scored our winner.

In the scenario we played Villa in a league game and our home held say 20,000,I reckon we could beat 14,035.Especially if we were challenging.

Maybe maybe 10 years ago, we have had a lot of tote enders pass and we have rarely had a real sell out, due to the space change and safety advisory stuff. I do think we could do 12-13 though but, with Rovers, it is keeping them coming. Unlike the 82, we do not have their numbers. Realistically we really are miles behind them. Would take, in my opinion, huge investment and clever marketing to have regular large crowds. The 82 average 20.8k even when crap. Bas, love your heart mate but we are nothing like what we were and, even then, we were the smaller club.

A 20,000 capacity Rovers stadium. 5000 Villa supporters. 9032 Gas to equal 74 season. 9033 to beat it. I reckon 15000 + very possible. Edit. Apparently our average this season is 8792.
