Scunthorpe United: National League side served with winding-up petition..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8378/production/_128265633_gettyimages-1298877394.jpgScunthorpe have been served a winding-up petition by HM Revenue and Customs over an alleged unpaid tax bill. Owner Peter Swann is trying to sell the National League club but a takeover, which seemed close to completion last month, is yet to go through. Swann has acknowledged the online publication of the winding-up petition but has added no further comment. The Iron were relegated out of the Football League after 72 years last season and are bottom of the division. Begbies Traynor, the company dealing with offers for the club, told BBC Radio Humberside that the winding-up petition "shows the urgency required by any potential purchaser". What an awful situation for that club. I feel real sympathy for them because although still a lower league club they have had some very good seasons in the 2010s. I went to Glanville Park for the opening match on our return to League 1 in August ‘16. Went in the main stand and their social bar and had several chats with the locals. They were confident of a win before the match and so it turned out, 3-1 in the end though Matt Taylor scored the opening goal and we played quite well. They had a decent manager, Graham Alexander, another ex-Fleetwood man. The people I was sat next to in the stand were confident of a promotion push to the Championship! Things didn’t turn out that way and the Conference North beckons with the serious financial problems they find themselves in.
Dare I say there for the grace of god we could have gone in 2014? Nick Higgs for all the grief he gets on here managed to stabilise us when we went out of the league in 2014 and DC and the team did the rest. But it could have gone badly wrong.
UTG!

If they can't pay the HMRC then it looks very bleak for them. At this rate they'll be lucky to be in Conference North next season...

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64406123Perhaps the first small step forwards for Scunthorpe. 8 points behind others so they look destined for NLN but they won tonight so perhaps a good day after so many bad ones. Good luck to them. UTG!

Not looking good for the Shrimpers. They've had severe money problems going back well over 10 years. They thought they'd sold Roots Hall to Sainsbury's and... you know how this one goes...

Southend United: Club's creditors agree to court hearing delay over potential winding-up petition..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6FD6/production/_133103682_gettyimages-1283331337.jpg Southend United are currently 10th in the National League table and seven points off the play-off placesSouthend United have agreed with their creditors to push back a court hearing by a month that would consider a winding-up petition against the club. It is hoped the National League side will have been sold to new owners ahead of the new proposed date of 15 May. The Insolvency and Companies Court in London were due to hear the winding-up petition on 17 April. But Southend chairman Ron Martin has said he is 99% sure the club will be sold by the middle of next month. Martin exchanged contracts for the sale of Southend with a consortium led by Australian IT millionaire Justin Rees in December but the deal is yet to be fully completed. Law firm Stewart's Law lodged the petition having not been paid for legal work for the Essex club. Two other creditors declared they would support the petition. "Following discussions with Ron Martin we have today agreed to an adjournment of the hearing on 17 April until 15 May (subject to the court's approval) by which time we are advised the sale will have completed," read a statement from Stewart's Law. The development is the latest in a season of turmoil for Southend, who are 10th the National League table, seven points outside the play-offs with three games remaining. The club's debts previously reached £2.5m and they were deducted 10 points in August for failing to meet a deadline to pay a £275,000 tax bill.
