With more and more cup games going straight to penalty shootouts, I was pondering the process. I am aware that both sides take 5 penalties each and then if it is all square, teams take alternative penalties until there is a winner after each team has had an equal number of penalties. If, after having gone through all players having a penalty, the process is repeated with players taking a second penalty until there is a winner.
In shootouts I have seen, goalkeepers seem to take the 11th attempt, however this is not always the case.
If a player has been sent off, does the team miss a turn, thereby giving the team with a full 11 players an advantage, or does the team missing a player get the advantage, as maybe their best penalty taker gets to compete against the worst of the other team. Haarland v de Gea as the takers if you wish. If it is the latter, should teams consider having poor penalty takers sent off during the shootout?
