Apparently in England (maybe whole of UK) ,there was a 5 year experimental phase,a time where we stopped hanging,but could bring it back.This in the 60s I guess. In this 5 year experimental phase,capital murders went up by 125%. So there's an argument for the return of hanging, that's been conveniently swept under the carpet. Can I ask again, which programme? Genuinely interested |

I think capital punishment did work as a deterrent against the most heinous of crimes Chesh. Your 'average' murder perhaps not,but the kind of murders that might leave you speechless because of its evil,I think the threat of hanging put some off. The US military executed 18 murderous rapacious scumbags at Shepton Mallett in WW2 and its a fact that after their execution none of the 18 committed any further offences, absolute deterrent. What logic, incredible. And what of those over the centuries that were hanged that were innocent. And what a shocker not all of the 'murderous rapacious scumbags' were actually murderers. And what an absolute surprise let's look at the make up of those men~ '...And during this time, 18 servicemen were executed at the prison - sixteen were hanged and two were shot by a firing squad. The Americans constructed their own execution wing, two storeys high that contained the gallows.
Hangman Thomas William Pierrepoint conducted most of these executions, assisted by his nephew, Albert Pierrepoint.
Of those executed, nine were convicted of murder, six of rape, .... 10 of those men were black, and three were Hispanic.' So are you going to hang rapists as well? And what will you do about innocent people who are state murdered? |

Since the death sentence was abolished stabbings (every one of which is a potential murder) have probably gone up by tens of thousands a year. Always makes me wonder about people who seem to worry more about criminals 'rights' than the victims, Lord Longford must have been a hero to these characters. |

So the 5 year experiment must of been 65 to 70. 125% increase in capital murder. |

The murder rate in the UK has remained around the 600 mark per annum since the 1980s and has has fallen significantly per capita.
It's just another dog whistle by people like Lee Anderson who want to distract from the poor failings of this Government.
It's a tactic used throughout the 20th and 21st Century to attract the angry voters.
