Birmingham opened its Commonwealth Games in spectacular style with a captivating, hopeful ceremony at Alexander Stadium.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai emphasised the importance of education in a surprise appearance while diver Tom Daley made a show of support for LGBTQ+ rights as the baton relay concluded.
But the biggest shock perhaps came when a 10m tall animatronic bull came steaming into the stadium as part of a ceremony that celebrated the multiculturalism of both Birmingham and the Commonwealth.
As the parade of athletes concluded, each of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales were warmly received before host nation England arrived in a cloud of confetti to send the volume skyrocketing with a crowd rendition of We Will Rock You.
The Games are officially open, with events beginning on Friday and more than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories across 19 sports and 280 medal events until 8 August.
In its opening ceremony partly masterminded by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, Birmingham lay down an early marker for what it wants to offer the sporting world over the next 12 days.
In the last games of 2018 Australia topped the medal table with 198, England were in 2nd place with 136 medals.

Cycling (track): Women's tandem B sprint, men's tandem B time trial, women's team pursuit, men's team pursuit, women's team sprint, men's team sprint
Gymnastics: Men's team
Swimming: Women's 400m medley, women's 200m free, men's 400m free, men's 100m back S9, women's 100m free S9, men's 200m breast, mixed 4x100m free relay
Triathlon: Women's sprint, men's sprint
There are 14 sports starting on day one so there's no shortage of action. England, Scotland and Wales' men's teams all begin their rugby sevens campaigns at 09:00, as do the England and Scotland women's teams. Sevens goes by in a blur, with all the medals awarded on Sunday, so watch it while you can.
By contrast, netball begins on Friday and lasts for most of the Games. Commonwealth champions England play Trinidad and Tobago in their opening game at 12:00, while at 18:00 Jamaica face Wales and New Zealand play Northern Ireland.
Women's cricket makes its Commonwealth Games debut on Friday. It's also the first time cricket has been included since a men's tournament was held at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur (won by South Africa, with England deciding not to send a team). This time, England are the only home nation represented in a tournament that also features Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, India, New Zealand, Barbados - representing the West Indies region - and Sri Lanka. It's a Twenty20 format, with Friday's action including Australia v India at 11:00 and Pakistan v Barbados at 18:00.

England were denied a dramatic 4x400m Commonwealth relay gold after officials ruled they committed a lane infringement before anchor Jessie Knight edged the tightest of finishes.
Knight initially seemed to have secured victory by a thousandth of a second ahead of Canada's Kyra Constantine.
But the hosts were denied a fairy tale end to the athletics programme as judges spotted Jodie Williams' foot straying on the first changeover.
Scotland were promoted to bronze.
