Awful news. But I sense Nick is a fighter from what I saw and I wish him every bit of luck and well-being as he fights this awful news. Good luck Nick and here’s to seeing you back at the Mem asap. UTG!

How cruel can life be, with the news of Steve Slade and now this.
I have done some research on this type of cancer and the skill of the surgery will be critical in determining his prospects as an athlete. Because he is a sports person, I hope that the tumour was detected early enough.

Horrible situation for Nick to have to face, hope so much that his career can be saved, and that he can be restored to full health. We will all be thinking of you Nick.

Early enough is the key to this, but sarcomas both soft and hard tissue are easily mistaken for other injuries and not diagnosed. Mutilative limb salvage is something my son experienced dealing with a soft tissue rhabdomyosarcoma in his right thigh seeing the entire muscle removed. The efforts being made are to protect life nothing else keeping this from spreading into Nicks lungs let alone taking enough bone to provide a clear cancer free margin. If we see Nick playing again that would be a miracle, but one I sincerely hope for.

Get fit Nick, you have thousands of us thinking of you.

Thankfully my son has survived 10 years now he was also 26 at his diagnosis. One phrase that I got from livestrong comes to mind that I would say to Nick is this ‘ fight like hell’.

I have talked with two of my specialists and as soon as i said what it is, they both had fearful looks on them and said it needs aggressive treatment. I will be praying for him at midday mass. My sister in law had an awful and prolonged end and she was clear but after amputation of her left leg, 18 months later it was all over her. I am no expert, far from it but i have become pretty good at self diagnosing and reluctantly as no one would listen. I wish him all the strength and good will that i can and hope that medicine has come on from that awful period

Surely you must have noticed how we have all clinicised dying and no one uses that word but instead uses passed or left us and other words, to avoid using the word. Anyway, not going to go deeper than that as i am hoping he has had this caught very early and treatment can save him EDIT When i had my chemo sessions and not for cancer but the worst of the diseases i have, a positive attitude is a must. I saw the fearful and weaker people just fade away and quickly, the more positive and even jovial did well. I was put in my place by a young lad of 7 who had AML and he tore me off a strip by telling me only girls cry and that i had to get myself together, wash my tears away and fight with all i had, i shall never forget that young boy, all i knew was his name was George but he provided me with real positivity and spoke way beyond his tender years

I meant cancer is a word beginning with c and containing 4 letters in total. You're right though mate, it does trigger emotions in us all. Absolutely everyone has either known someone with cancer, or will do. Vile. Nick is fit, a fighter and plainly has a heart of a lion. He WILL be strong!

Devastating for him and his young family.

The one advantage sports people have is that they have access to checks far earlier than the rest of us. My thoughts are with Nick and his family at this very difficult time.
