"The national anthem might be sung a little bit louder than it is normally, and rightly so. "It's great knowing that we're going to be playing this game, not just for us but in memory of the Queen, so it's a very special occasion for us." The Oval sits on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, responsibility of which is passed on to the new Duke of Cornwall, the Prince of Wales. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3222/production/_126643821_theoval.jpgPlayers and officials entered the field of play through a military guard of honour

Well that only took 25 minutes to knock off the few runs needed to clinch the match and series 2-1.
Lees 39, Crawley 69no, Pope 11no, Rabada 1-69.
England win by 9 wickets
Robinson named player of the match for figures of 7-89.
Player of the Match Ollie Robinson to BBC Test Match Special: "It is really pleasing to put in this performance and get the series win. It is my first series win in an England shirt and it has been a great week and a great few weeks to be back around the lads.
"It is a very enjoyable, free-flowing environment. I think Baz [McCullum] and Stokesy just oozed that confidence in the players and they give you that sort of extra lift when you need it. It is just really enjoyable to a part of and you can see from when we're on the field, we've all got massive smiles on our faces and are laughing and it is a really enjoyable place to play cricket, and I think that is why the performances and results are coming."
England Player of the Series and captain Ben Stokes: "I'm delighted, it's been a great series for us as a team. It has been one of those series where we haven't had many individual standout performances, but different people have put their hand up for us throughout and that's what you want in team sport.
"You want to be able to turn to people at key times and break the game open with either bat or ball and that's what we've had throughout.
"The conditions that we've found ourselves in on day one, the toss has always been a good one to win. But when you do win it, you've still got to go out and execute your plans and when you lose the toss, you've got to counteract that. That's what Test cricket is about, who can do that best.
"When you've got the bowlers that we have, it's about trying to manage them at the start of an innings when the ball is doing its most, and not taking too much out of them, and then bringing myself into the game at an appropriate time when they've had a few good spells. It's about understanding when I need to get the most out of them and they have been phenomenal all summer."

England v South Africa ODI squad: Jofra Archer picked for one-day international series..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3C28/production/_128100451_gettyimages-1385156419.jpgJofra Archer is in line for his first England appearance in almost two years after being named in the one-day squad to play South Africa early next year. The fast bowler, 27, has not played for England since March 2021 because of back and elbow injuries. Test batters Ben Duckett and Harry Brook are in, while bowler Reece Topley has recovered from the ankle injury he suffered at October's T20 World Cup. The sides will play in three one-day internationals, starting on 27 January. Mark Wood has been rested after the 3-0 Test series whitewash of Pakistan, while Joe Root has not been named in the squad. Former Test captain Root has signed for the Dubai Capitals in the International League T20, which takes place in the UAE from 13 January to 12 February. All-rounder Liam Livingstone, who injured his knee during the second day of the first Test in Rawalpindi, misses out. The series will act as the start of preparations for England's defence of their 50-over world title in India in the autumn, although a two-Test tour of New Zealand follows two weeks after the final ODI. South Africa v England: Jofra Archer return headlines one-day series..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1578C/production/_128384978_jofraarcher.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/43D2/production/_128426371_jofraarcher.jpgJofra Archer's return headlines an otherwise low-key one-day series in South Africa that begins a crucial year for the England men's team. Fast bowler Archer, 27, is set to play for England for the first time in almost two years on Friday (11:00am). The three-match series begins a 2023 in which England will look to defend the 50-over World Cup and regain the Ashes. The opener is in Bloemfontein, as is Sunday's second game, before a finale in Kimberley on Wednesday. The series is rescheduled from 2020, when England left South Africa after a number of positive coronavirus tests. In order for it to be played, the inaugural season of the South Africa T20 league has taken an eight-day break and will recommence on 2nd February. This tour and England's limited-overs trip to Bangladesh in March - also rescheduled from 2021 - come either side of a two-Test series in New Zealand in February, and only a handful of players are involved in both red and white-ball squads. England, world champions in both limited-overs formats, will defend the 50-over title they won in 2019 in India in October and November.

Katherine Brunt: England bowler retires from county cricket..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/415C/production/_128423761_gettyimages-1413419310-1.jpgVeteran England bowler Katherine Brunt has announced her retirement from regional and county cricket. Brunt will play The Hundred for Trent Rockets this summer but will not play for Northern Diamonds or Yorkshire. "I don't want to be opening the bowling for Yorkshire or the Diamonds when someone like Lizzie Scott is absolutely capable of doing it," she said. Brunt, 37, last played county cricket in 2019, when she made her 100th appearance for Yorkshire. Brunt won the County Championship with Yorkshire in 2015 and will play for England in the T20 World Cup next month in South Africa. She has only played eight times for Northern Diamonds across the first three years of regional cricket, sometimes as a batter rather than a bowler. "I've played some games over the last few seasons, but it's been two or three max per year," she said. "That's all the schedule has allowed. That goes for most of the players who play all three formats for England. "I don't want to take up someone's place in the team. I wouldn't think that's fair when there's so much good young talent in that Diamonds set-up." Brunt, who is England's leading wicket-taker in ODIs and T20I internationals, retired from Test cricket last summer.

South Africa v England - 1st ODI - Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein - South Africa won the toss and decided to bat..South Africa 298-7 (50 overs) van der Dussen 111, Miller 53, de Kock 37, S.Curran 3-35, Archer 1-81 England 271 all out (44.2 overs) Roy 113, Malan 59, Buttler 36, Nortje 4-62, Magala 3-46 South Africa win by 27 runs, what a total cock-up that was, threw away a win. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/31AA/production/_128441721_gettyimages-1460029520.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/6179/production/_128435942_gettyimages-1459964274.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/9D20/production/_128442204_gettyimages-1246593571.jpgEngland carelessly fell to a 27-run defeat in the first one-day international against South Africa despite Jason Roy's belligerent century in Bloemfontein. On the day Jofra Archer made his comeback from injury, opener Roy crashed a 79-ball century to seemingly put his side on course for a comfortable victory in pursuit of 299. He powered England to 146-0 inside 20 overs and 196-3 in the 30th over before he was caught on the boundary for 113 from 91 balls. But the wicket of Moeen Ali four overs later began a collapse of six wickets for 49 runs in the face of fiery fast bowling. Anrich Nortje took 3-13 in a four-over spell and England were bowled out for 271 in with 5.4 overs to go to complete a remarkable turnaround. Rassie van der Dussen had earlier hit a measured 111 from 117 balls in South Africa's 298-7. It had looked as though the hosts had failed to capitalise on being 75-1 after 10 overs and 167-3 after 30, Sam Curran leading an England fightback with 3-35. On his first England appearance for almost two years, Archer struggled at times, finishing with figures of 1-81 from 10 overs - his most expensive figures in ODIs. The win puts South Africa 1-0 up in the three-match series before Sunday's second ODI and is a boost for the hosts' bid to qualify automatically for this year's 50-over World Cup.

Jos Buttler's unbeaten 94 off 82 balls had been the backbone of England's total, while Harry Brook made an impressive 80. But England's attack struggled to make inroads at key moments as South Africa skipper Bavuma's 109 off 102 balls laid the foundation for the chase. David Miller's unbeaten 58 got the hosts over the line with five balls and five wickets to spare as they completed their third-highest ODI chase. It could prove to be a crucial victory in the Proteas' bid to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup later this year via the ICC Super League. Asked to bat first, England recovered from a spell of hostile bowling, which left them 33-2, thanks to crucial knocks by Brook and Buttler. Moeen Ali played a useful hand with a 45-ball 51 as he shared a 106-run stand with Buttler for the fifth wicket before South Africa's bowlers rallied. England were pegged back at the business end of the innings, although Buttler and Sam Curran (28) provided an explosive finish, striking 30 off the last two overs. Bavuma played with freedom en route to his 90-ball century but, having struggled with cramp in the latter part of his innings, was bowled by Curran. Rassie van der Dussen (38) and Aiden Markram (49) played useful supporting roles, backed up by a composed knock by Miller off 37 balls as he sealed victory with a thumping six off the first ball of final over.

South Africa 287 all out (43.1 overs) Klaasen 80, Hendricks 52, Bavuma 35, Archer 6-40, Rashid 3-68 England win by 59 runs ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16075/production/_128492209_gettyimages-1461396030.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DA79/production/_128492955_gettyimages-1461413853.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/2BDD/production/_128492211_gettyimages-1461410046.jpgA resurgent Jofra Archer took six wickets to inspire England to a 59-run consolation victory against South Africa in the third one-day international. Defending 347 after superb centuries from Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler, Archer took a match-changing 6-40 in his second match back after 17 months out injured. He bowled at high pace and unsettled batters in a performance reminiscent of his debut international season in 2019. The 27-year-old had Rassie van der Dussen caught in his first spell and, with the Proteas well placed at 158-3, he returned to dismiss Aiden Markram and David Miller in consecutive overs. Heinrich Klaasen then threatened to take South Africa to a stunning victory with 80 from 62 balls but Archer ended his onslaught to all but decide the contest. He then bowled Wayne Parnell to clinch his first five-wicket haul and wrapped up the match by dismissing Tabraiz Shamsi - the Proteas all out for 287 in 43.1 overs. The win ends England's five-match losing run in the format but the return to form of Archer could prove of far more significance in a year when his side host Australia in the Ashes, and defend the 50-over World Cup the paceman did so much to help win four years ago.

That turned out to be a good weeks cricket to watch. Both teams did well. South Africa win the series yet still may not qualify for the actual 50 overs World Cup. Blimey whatever the ICC rules are that’s a bit silly, makes the ECB look good. (And to think that is even sillier!) Watching Malan and Buttler destroy the SA bowling was a very entertaining watch esp doing it from a position of 14-3 when the pressure was on. Englands batting was good with one player hitting a very good score in each of the matches. The batting is good with perhaps the biggest ? over Ben Duckett but the bowling is less certain. England have lost lots of their recent games but the depth looks very strong so I don’t think many will be too concerned. Apparently before England won the T20 World Cup recently they had lost 3 successive 3-match series. So losing the series was more important for SA than England and I don’t think England will be concerned. Biggest thing is their players remaining in good form.
