Stats: BRFC 1 Barrow 0 - 72% - 28% - Shots 19-13 - On Target 7-6 - Corners 10-4 - Fouls 10-12 - Yellows 3-0 - Reds 0-1 - Referee David Rock - Attendance 6,685 (88 Barrow)
Match Report: Ten-man Barrow were sunk by a stunning goal from Antony Evans as Bristol Rovers snatched all three points late on at The Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.
Mark Cooper’s men were forced to play an hour a man light after Niall Canavan was shown a straight red card for a professional foul – and it looked for so long as if the defiant Bluebirds would hang on for a point.
However, Evans produced a moment suitable to win any game when he rifled in a 25-yard blockbuster to give Rovers another win as they look to make a charge for the play-offs.
On a miserable night, it was Barrow who got on the front foot first when Anthony Glennon’s ball into the penalty area caused problems and it fell kindly for Ollie Banks who drilled a shot on goal which was well blocked by Rovers’ keeper James Belshaw.
The hosts responded with a slick move down the left as Elliot Anderson released Harry Anderson away down the left and he drove in on goal before sliding a low shot on target which Paul Farman did excellently to keep out.
Harry Anderson was looking a threat on the flank, and he came close again on 19 minutes when he moved inside from the left and curled an effort on goal but he just couldn’t generate the whip to bring it back inside Farman’s far post.
Farman was called into action again eight minutes later when Leon Clarke found the space to shot from just inside the box, but the Barrow keeper got down quickly to his left to hold the effort.
There was a key moment on 32 minutes when a long ball was sent over the top towards Clarke who looked to get through on goal before Niall Canavan appeared to tug him back. The referee conferred with his assistant before brandishing a red card for the Bluebirds centre-back.
Clarke spurned a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock just after the hour mark when Evans’ cross found the front man six yards out but he somehow managed to prod his shot over the bar.
The hosts finally found a way through eight minutes from time when Evans decided to hit one from 25 yards and his powerful strike flew into the top corner to give Rovers a 1-0 lead.
Barrow pushed on as injury time arrived and Banks was brilliantly denied by Belshaw when he met Patrick Brough’s low cross to the back post only for the keeper to be well positioned to save.
Platt then caused a problem inside the six-yard area but couldn’t quite force the ball home and then Banks was once again denied by Belshaw from the follow-up as Rovers hung on.
Bristol Rovers: Belshaw, Connolly, Clarke (Saunders 79), Nicholson, E Anderson (Loft 71), Anderton (Collins 59), Taylor, H Anderson, Evans, Whelan, Hoole. Subs: Jaakola, Finley, Collins, Coutts, Nolan.
Booked: Evans, Anderton, Collins.
Barrow: Farman, Taylor, J Jones, Canavan, Brough, Glennon (Platt 84), Banks, White (Gordon 63), Rooney, Gotts, Harris (Hutton 70). Subs not used: Ntlhe, Williams, Wakeling.

Not the most convincing of performances, but a goal fit to win any match. Just when I thought it was never going to happen. Time wasting Barrow got exactly what they deserved from the game. Nice to see a couple of Ukrainian flags being waved too.

Superb performances from Whelsn and Belshaw and fantastic strike by Evans. Their keeper played well and they defended strongly especially after going down to ten men.

I thought Rovers played the 11 v 10 very well tonight.Barrow played ten men at the back!
We passed, kept getting the ball wide and crossing.
Leon perhaps should of scored as we kept the pressure up.
A fantastic rocket shot from Anthony Evan's won the game and maybe it needed something that good to win it.The Barrow GK played very well.
After we scored Barrow decided to attack and if it was for James they would of scored
Great 3 points.
UTG!

What a cold, wet, frustrating evening that was! Very, very relieved to come away with a win and a critical three points, taking us to within two points of the playoffs and five points away from the last automatic promotion position. Crazy!
Barrow started the game strongly and kept us pushed back deep in our own half for the first ten minutes. They certainly did not look like a team at the bottom of the table initially.
Once we got a hold of the game, Barrow reverted to a defensive game plan and played for the next 70 minutes for a 0-0 draw. They defended resolutely throughout the game and gave us all a lesson in time wasting. It was like watching the Italian national team of old. Players fell over, kicked the ball away, carried the ball around like that spoilt kid at the park who brought the ball and refused to play when his side was losing....
Their game plan very nearly worked to perfection. It was only a wonder goal from Anthony Evans after 81 minutes that change the game and kicked Barrow to life. From that point on, Barrow played like a team possessed. I could hardly believe that this terrible time wasting negative outfit had the ability to attack at pace.
For the final ten minutes plus an eternity of added time, Barrow battered our goal. How on earth they failed to score is beyond me. Belshaw made a save whilst led on the ground, I think they hit the post. It was a crazy last 15 minutes..
Apart from the start and end of the game, we completely dominated the game and laid siege to the Barrow goal. We tried and tried to work down their right side and threw cross after cross into the box to very little effect. We also seemed to want to pass our way into the goal.
We fully deserved to win the game tonight, although I felt it was slipping away from us after so many missed chances.
Good to see Leon Clarke get some decent minutes tonight. He had a couple of golden chances, which I am sure he would have scored had he been match sharp. Him being in the right place at the right time is encouraging though. We need some goals from him before the season is done.
Fair play to the small number that travelled from Barrow. They were loud for their numbers, although their one song was getting a bit annoying by the end.
We are very much still on course for the playoffs, we just need to keep this run going.

UTG Good summary, Rich. Looking back, I`m glad we waited until the 81st minute to spark Barrow into life. If we`d scored five minutes after half time, we might well not have ended up with the three points. Should have been able to see the game out better than that against ten men. It was real heart in mouth time, and I needed a few pints of McEwan`s Export to calm down afterwards. UTG!!

Oldie, the trick is to see things before they happen, getting this right now and again is a good thing. To predict, rather than only offer bitter review. Anyway,I can see this is abit much for you at the moment,so I'll offer a more elementary lesson. The bendy bit half way up your arms, this is an elbow. The bit where your blow offs come out of,this is your bottom. Once you've mastered this - don't be intimidated, with practice you'll get it - we can talk football. 👍

Very glad of the win, but as per Sat opposition should have scored late on. Not sure about our game management towards the end. Saunders should have been left up top with his pace could have caused issues on break. Don't think we were quick enough with substitutes. Clarke was tiring, Saunders should have been on earlier as he was very quick to get in the box when on.

I thought it was a nervy performance. We struggled to create anything in the second half. The final ball into the box was very poor, especially the crossing. Plus, when we did put a good ball in there didn't seem to be anyone attacking it. It just looked like it needed a defensive mistake or something special to break the deadlock, and we got something special! However, sometimes you have to grind out result's, and at the moment it's result's that count not the performance.
Saturdays's game is now vital. Win that and we go above Newport with a game in hand. Looking at the table we are now in with a shout of automatic promotion. Momentum is vital, and at the moment we have it !

Always difficult when the bus is parked in front of goal backed up with a bloody good goalkeeper on the line, who I noticed applauded the Gas fans in the Thatchers End behind the goal at FT and got a well deserved round of applause.
Barrow were a tidy side who have found their level, and were unlucky not to come away with a point and easily could have based on that performance.
Rovers were all over them in the second half and unlike Exeter, on Saturday, who applied the same type of pressure but with guile and penetration.
With the fans getting increasingly frustrated with Constant shouts of ‘shoot’ - Evans duly obliged with a wonder goal and the points were ours.
I also thought I heard the Millwall anthem ‘ no one likes us we don’t care’ with Joey B***** substituted in the words, which might cause offence to some, but Hey Ho this is football and JB is no ‘Jimmy Saviile’who has been sung about now and again i on away days which is in bad taste.
Roll on Saturday when we play the ‘sheep sha**ers we know what we are’ Win there and we jump above them and closing in on automatic UTG

Some observations from last night.
72% possession for us must be a record for the season. Whelan completed so many passes, it was almost hypnotic.
Disappointed in our right side, especially second-half. I would have hooked Nicholson and put on Thomas. Hoole looked tentative going forwards.
Elliot Anderson flatters to deceive. I want him to drive at players, just like Collins and Harry Anderson do. This opens up what was a blanket defence. Taken off, when he should have been in his element.
Loft with Clarke did not work. Please play Saunders, no ifs, no buts, instead of Loft for rest of season. Even Spence instead of Loft.
Last 15 minutes, without Anderton, Coutts, Finley etc. and Whelan out on his feet, we were there for the taking.
Superb strike from Evans. Belshaw is quick and decisive. Harry Anderson has been our best player in last 2 home games.
IMHO great momentum, but not quite good enough to win play-offs. It will be an excellent achievement to get there, given start to season.

Why would any rovers supporter be disappointed with a win baselswh ? I think you are getting a bit paranoid mate, not liking the manager and wanting rovers to win are two, very separate things

I really enjoyed the match though it got a tad nervous at 0-0 and at the end.
Thank goodness for Belshaw, some great stops at the beginning and at the end. In between I could have gone in goal for all the work he had to do. But he did it when needed. What a signing he’s become. Nick Anderson was unlucky to be subbed because he is getting better and better. I think he knows what he can’t do and sticks to things he can and he’s very good on the ball and looks dependable.I thought Elliot A and Harry A had great first halfs but Harry kept it up but Elliot dropped off I think because Barrow played so deep he couldn’t make those runs, there was little space for him. I actually though Ryan Loft added something when he came on, he was lively and shook their defenders.
Luca H did ok but when advanced in attack him and Sam N overloaded that part of Barrows defence but seemed to lack the confidence to swing in crosses and passed back when he shouldn’t have done. Imo only! Aaron C certainly made a difference when he came on. Not Evans’ best match but his quality shone through when it was needed although I thought he was too deep for much of the time. Glen Whelan played well and stopped them on many occasions. I guess that we made so many changes yet still controlled the game is a good sign.
Barrow were ok. They played some neat football and when they had the player sent off they reorganised and set themselves up well. It was frustrating to see them time waste but all teams do it. I was in the East Stand and the fans around me were getting nervous esp as we were playing some lovely possession football but not having an end product until the goal. We do play some great stuff on the ground going forward. With the midfield options we’ve got I’m not sure we missed Finley except at the end when we missed a bit of his control to manage the game. So it became squeaky bum time.
Well done to those hardy Barrow fans who made a bit of noise on a horrible evening weather wise.
Well done the team and JB. Although frustrating at times it is an attractive team to watch atm. Now we move on to the Newport match in good form. COYB!
UTG!
