Football should be a release. A sanctuary from the difficulty of life." I mean, really. Can anyone read that and not think "WTF" I can`t see that`s so ridiculous. This from J B Priestley: Going to the match, “..turned you into a member of a new community, all brothers together for an hour and half … having pushed your way through a turnstile into another and altogether more splendid life.”
Ok, I`m sure that all Rovers fans would agree that it`s not always a more splendid life watching the Gas, nonetheless, football does provide a 90 minute break from the pressures and cares of everyday life. You might think that`s ridiculous, but I wouldn`t agree.
But quote the words "Sanctuary from the difficulty of life" Sanctuary: "the protection from danger or a difficult situation that is provided by a safe place." Hyperbole, or the use of English by someone who does not know the meaning of the words he uses, whilst trying to impress upon the naive his leadership skills.... |

Before Southend United's recent game against Bromley Kevin Maher made the comments below which I think are interesting when compared to JB's programme notes today. What stands out for me is that there is no demand for Southend fans to be grateful to their owner, CEO, Community Trust, or groundsmen and there is no attempt to stifle legitimate criticism or any implication that "if you are not with us you are against us". Kevin says in a simple understated way that he is grateful for the fans support whereas JB seems determined to take the "gratefulness culture" at Rovers to new levels and to vilify anyone who disagrees with him. Kevin Maher's attitude is far more in keeping with the BRFC I once knew but I understand that these days fans are willing to forsake standards of dignity and sincerity so long as they think it will bring Rovers success. But will it ? SOUTHEND United’s match against Bromley will be watched by a bumper crowd at Roots Hall tonight. Blues have already sold 7,600 tickets for the National League clash as Kevin Maher’s side aim to make it eight league games without defeat. And Maher remains incredibly grateful for the support. “To see the number of tickets being sold is a real credit to the fans,” said the Blues boss. “They’re right behind us and they’ve been brilliant lately. “It makes a massive difference on the pitch and you can see that with the late goals we’ve got. “When the crowd stays with you like that it can make a big difference.” Blues last played in front of a crowd of more than 7,000 at Roots Hall back in February 2020 against Coventry City No doubt that is how it has become at Rovers now. Maher makes some salient points and I can certainly relate to them. |

Depends how you read it apparently, Bas. Are you one of those who have forsaken Rovers standards of decency, etc.? Haha!🙂👍 No football team in the world wants negativity any where near them! As Joe pointed out the lads love that Mem Gashead racket cheering them on. Negativity drags you down in all walks of life. Positive cheering lifts you. It's commonsense to want your team to be cheered on and perhaps especially so,after a disapointing defeat. Those moaning about this message from Joe are habitual moaners and anti JB-ers. Clearly mischief making. As usual. For all their experience of following Rovers,I think there's a naivety about their thinking.Quite surprising. Not to be taken too seriously. In the past we had the "get rid of Lennie" brigade.That was a rubbish idea. More recently we had "get rid of GC" brigade.That was another rubbish idea. Now up to date,we have the "get rid of JB" brigade.A rubbish idea. By the way,congratulations if you've achieved a hattrick of the "rubbish ideas" mentioned. Such foresight and deep understanding of football. I just wish they would wake up,stop buggering about and get up the Mem (if they are currently not attending) and cheer our Rovers on! You forget there is another a bigger option to positivity and negativity, it is goes by the name of reality. I doubt anyone would have even mentioned the message from JB until Swiss tried to create some deeper meaning behind it that gives a negative spin on all things BRFC, as he likes to do. It should be filed in Spam alongside his 'Rovers will be renting a home in 12 months time" and "Rovers will be owned by JB's cohorts this time next year" threads. People jump on it as it gives them an opportunity to say how terrible everything is, but in reality JB's message is just like what is echoed at every club from Man U to Scunthorpe. There is No deeper meaning to it. Things are getting better. 4 defeats in 18, new training ground, commercial transformed (Has anyone been to the on line shop?..probably not), Ticketing sorted, great comms starting to happen. Some people really dont seem to like it when things start getting better do they. Bitterness I assume. We have all been hoodwinked by a cult of positivity to blind us to the wickedness of B***** and incompetence of CEO and Owner. Maybe, some of the Forum members on here want to turn this Forum into a cult dedicated to total negativity? Joey sent me a follow-up to his email from yesterday. It showed that I matter as he spelt my name correctly on 2 consecutive days. He wrote Dear Vaughan Please get off Gasheads.org for your own sanity. You don't belong there. What in the name of Penelope Cruz is wrong with asking for positive support at the game? It's not as if the likes of Hillier are "playing" for us (thankfully). This lot are a good bunch and surely deserve support. Football is all about passion and opinions for sure, Just a heads up about some of the language, because akin with blasphemy, we don’t want to be taking the name of Penelope Cruz in vain, no matter how delectably poised the B***** Project is today. Though I concede, if the forum is to have a God, why not Penelope Cruz.  |

Whilst defeat on Tuesday night was difficult for us all to take, we also must not lose sight of where we have come from. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Day by day, week by week, we will incrementally strive to improve. Progress has been positive of late but we still believe, as a group, we have yet to consistently play our best football.
Not so long back the club was comfortable in the division above. When this man arrived, talking of a promotion challenge from *that* division this season, the club was not in a relegation zone, which reassuringly appeared to be 75% booked.
Am I doing this right?
Now he’s urging people to gird themselves for games against ‘in form’ teams in the 4th division, having finished adrift at the bottom of the league above and disappeared into the depths of that div 4 without touching the sides. This is like the King of the Visigoths lecturing about the building of Rome.
The longer and further I get from the club, the less frequent my interest in it, and the more ridiculous and delusional it looks from a distance. I think that delusion is probably its key problem. Losing that gobsh1te, who was recently slagging Jürgen Klopp off from the bottom end of div 4 (!), still seems an important step in that. Still, not really my issue now - just the musings of a long-term and well-meaning, friend.
I’m genuinely glad some folk are enjoying it. I hope that continues and all the best to you. My buy-in is disappearing over the horizon after however many decades, time spent, away days done etc. Surprisingly there's not a jot of negativity or bitterness in that. I don’t need to be told to stay away by him, or accept his conditions of attendance, and it’s a shame he chooses to define a ‘them and us’ culture war rather than something inclusive, but hey. It’s his club now, so I get to eff off, and actually I’ve found the grass is greener doing other stuff and leaving him to it.

If someone's in a bad place/difficult situation, the sanctuary of football is a release. Les, as often, you're trying to play smart with semantics, because you don't like the writer. In your opinion. But allow me to correct you on a nuance. It's not a question of liking or disliking. It's a matter of respect. I have no respect for him whatsoever. His managerial period with us has been disastrous, his public utterances utterly embarrassing. To your broader point. I agree the afternoon at a game can be a welcome break from the everyday. But "A sanctuary from the difficulty of life" (Even that makes no sense, I am sure he meant difficulties) Really? Nah, it's verbal diarrhea. |

Ha ha. Or Chairman Mao. It's this that made me laugh "There has to be no negativity. We only want positive people. There are enough negatives in the world. Everyone is always 'outraged' by something. Football should be a release. A sanctuary from the difficulty of life." I mean, really. Can anyone read that and not think "WTF" Going to Rovers after my marraige broke down got me through one of the most difficult periods of my life. It was an afternoon of escapism, surrounded by people who had no idea how s**t my life was, so they didn't ask awkward questions, and there was great camaraderie with fellow fans. |

That's all very well Joey, but at the start of the season you gave us the impression we would be in the promotion places by this stage of the season. We're actually 14th in a table that is being led by a team of farmers from south gloucestershire.
The best thing that you could do in the circumstances is to keep your head down and try to improve the results that you have produced to date. The fans have every reason to expect better than what you have produced. Perhaps give them something to be positive about?

So happy to be corrected that its actually two people rather than one whose initial reaction to the message was negative.  |

I watched the penalty incident this morning on the Full Match replay on iFollow, with the Away commentary switched on.
The BBC Notts team thought it was a stonewall penalty, both in real time and after seeing it back on their iPads.
I thought it was a penalty from my West Stand vantage point., yesterday, as well, obv.

You are right to bring up the question of whether JB's message yesterday was a standard rallying call or whether there is a deeper meaning to it. That's why I posted Kevin Maher's message to Southend fans to show what I consider a normal rallying call to be. Kevin Maher has not called his predecessors negligent or described directors of the club as clowns but has gone about his role as manager of a football club in a respectful and professional way. Yesterday I think JB conveyed a tacit message that Rovers won't get promoted and the deeper meaning within it was revealed with his phrase "we need you with us". Most fans think "us" means Rovers but I think "us" means JB and he is saying he wants Gasheads to stick with him even if we can now see the emptiness of his promotion promise and claim that any manager who can't get Rovers out of League 2 at the first attempt isn't a credible manager. He talks about not losing sight of where we have come from because he knows that nobody is going to say "but Joey we've come from League 1". And he talks about "excellence" and "building a football club to make you all proud" because he knows he won't be challenged about this or asked for evidence. He has realised that Rovers fans believe what they are told so if he can get loyalty to him to be perceived as loyalty to Rovers then he will be able to carry on with his experiment using Wael's money in the hope it eventually pays off for him. When you say things are getting better I don't doubt that the atmosphere at the Mem is good and the team are giving their best which are both welcome. But the list of positives you keep repeating is never scrutinised so we can'tbe sure whether they are real or imaginary. We take it at face value when we are told by Tom that the training ground is approaching Premier League Standard but fail to wonder why videos or photo's of it are so hard to find and forget about JB's criticism of it early in the season ? When we are told the commercial operation is highly successful we never think to ask about the year on year revenue increases this should be providing to the club but just assume it must be happening. Surely if things are going so well we shouldn't need to be constantly told about it because it would be so plain to see from the results achieved ? And if we were really heading in a forward direction the communication from the club and manager wouldn't always be about what has supposedly happened already (although we can't actually see it) it would be about what is going to take place in the near future like the play off push, stage 2 of the training ground starting and plans for the new stadium being revealed. |
