Totally right. Iris M's Nuns and Soldiers is to be read for a brilliantly incisive incursion into the torments of the Polish nation in 1944-45 - just as The Red and the Green tells you about the driving forces behind the Easter Rising and the shameful story of partition. Thank you for the recommendations. I have a passion for reading about that time and in how the Polish never gave up, i know how it affected my family and even though it cost our family dearly, my parents sent whatever they could. I have a passion for history in any case so it’s nice of you to give the recommendations as i have never read those books

I won't copy your posts, KP, as they are long. I'm largely in agreement with you. The part Polish pilots took in the RAF during WW2 is incredible and we owe them a huge debt. Having watched many TV documentaries on WW2 I'm well aware of the terrible suffering of the Polish people then. It's heart rending. I would only dispute one point. Churchill was fully aware of Stalin's intentions and would have opposed them. Unfortunately it was Roosevelt who was entirely taken in by him and believed the two of them could lead a new World order of peace and justice. The rest is history. My only problem with Polish and other Eastern Europeans coming to the UK is that are we poaching skilled workers and leaving their home countries short.

Not so much poaching but offering them a better life, no different to the brain drain to the USA in the 70’s. I agree Churchill was a but part player but he had influence on the victory parade, that was taken very badly and still best left alone. My father turned down going to Buckingham place for an award as he said if we were not good enough for them then, i will not betray my own people now. I didn’t know just how badly he had taken it, taken very personally. I think they Polish got an apology in 97 so many years later. I will leave it at that as im veering off topic and this is obviously something i can get heated about.

This is what I fail to understand. These people have all come here to work. Even 0 hour contracts for rubbish money and having to work every waking hour God sends. This makes me think there can be no work in these EU countries. You know, the wonderful, wonderful EU Utopia where the streets are paved with gold and the rivers flow with milk and honey (Accordimg to the Remaniacs) As they are too proud to accept any form of state benefit, I wonder why they were all so desperate to come here. Beats me. Ok, a brief history, many of these countries were under communist rule for over 60 years, had to queue for things such as bread. My father could not go back after fighting with distinction in the last world war, he has his Polish passport taken and not recognised as a citizen as the eastern bloc was ceded to the soviets by Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt , at Yalta. The Polish knew of this whilst they were fighting at the Falaise gap or Hill 262 yet they fought and won that pivotal battle, alongside monte cassino, knowing they faced horrific times if they went home, it would never be home for the majority of them and they never saw their families again. Much more is coming out now. Britain did not pay any war pension to any of those who stayed. Many such people, like my parents, spent a huge amount of money sending parcels to their families. I talk of Poland but it was the same for any of the Eastern European countries that foughtwith us. Britain has many who now live abroad but nothing is said of that. Don’t you think that if you had any chance of bettering yourself and your families lives, that you wouldn’t take it. The Battle of Britain would not have been won , not without the fighters from Poland, the Czech pilots, many commonwealth too ? Falaise and Monte Cassino were all pivotal to victory yet they were not even allowed to march in the victory parade , to the eternal shame of those who sealed the fate of many hundreds of thousands All of us are born to circumstance and by accident of birth, we are born here. They come to better their lives and not to sit on theirs backsides, on benefits. You really should read more history so you get a better perspective Brexit , even many tories, now admit to be an awful mistake but in hushed tones but they are getting louder, thats been done to death anyway. Go to any hotel, airport or hospital where menial work is done and you will find many have a majority of workers from the EU zone and Philippines, now we need them as many of the indigenous population will not take the jobs, if they do then they dont last a week. My mrs works in an hotel and works around 70 hours a week, if she refuses then they get rid. This is how England is now and , due to the pandemic i am sure it will get worse. Ask the hospitals if they would like the EU workers back and you will get a resounding yes, luckily a fair few got settled status or we would be in an even worse place. Personally, i went to Germany to better myself as options were poor here and i took the chance, many British have emigrated to have better options and a better lifestyle. One thing though, please don’t tell me that if you had bugger all here, with no chance of that changing and had the chance to go abroad and better yourself, that you wouldn’t take it. It’s human nature to do so and how the USA was built and settled. In brief, your answers lay in history. Think yourself blessed that you were born here and not into abject poverty with zero chance of that changing. Maybe ask yourself why we are still allowing people in from Somalia, who are coached on our benefit system and much more, are still coming here but with no work ethic, do not have historical ties and have no thought of work, i shouldn’t generalise as i am sure some do but, by and large, the EU workers came here to work the government even felt the need to publish the figures on what just the Polish workers have brought to the country, in taxes and more. Bravo KP. So many issues there probably best in general. But 3 things: ... Anyone, you, me will move and migrate to other places to improve our lives. It’s what people do. ... the USA was built on migration but so was this country. Brits and Celts from Europe over 2000 years ago, Romans from the first century AD, the Anglo-Saxons (Germans), Viking’s and Danes from about the 7th century onwards, Norman’s (French) from 1066, various groups Huguenots, Jews who were all kicked out of their birth countries at various times since. And of course other national groups that have come at various times. This includes all those who came over after the war from the commonwealth. ... And, unfortunately, these minorities are always an easy target for other groups who feel threatened. This country is the union of all these groups. The country has benefitted from these groups but there will always be people who have a different opinion. UTG! ps. Blimey, moved a bit away from Steve Evans!

Not a comfortable read for Poles, a worrying story of anti-semitism that continues. It’s a good read KP, but may make you a bit uncomfortable. UTG!!

It won’t to be truthful as i know many hated the Jews and still do. It’s unfortunate but each country has their ignorant folks, Poland is not immune to this. My father could never accept , as he used to say, the way they walked into the chambers with flakes of their friends falling on them, he felt they should have risen up and at least had a go. He held strong views, we didn’t always agree but boy, i miss the old boy

Your brief history is very slanted, which I understand, but I would ask you to consider the following: Polish and other Eastern European people wouldn’t have had the opportunity to fight the Nazis without Britain declaring war on Germany after they invaded Poland. Your country and others would have been totally consumed without British intervention, and as a result this country was embroiled in a costly and ruinous war as we stood alone against Nazi domination. It’s debatable if the Russians would have been able to resist the German advance if they weren’t busy fighting on 2 fronts as Britain forced them to divide their forces as they tried to conquer us. The Polish and other nationalities played an important role in the eventual victory. Probably the only reason the Nazis were defeated was as a result of the Americans joining in in the latter years. As for your father not getting a war pension, my Father joined up Immediately war was declared and ended up serving for 7 years before he was demobbed, and was part of the DDay invasion force. He didn’t get a pension either, just half a dozen or so medals. Growing up in Avonmouth in the 1950’s and 60’ there were a number of families with Polish fathers, and I played with their kids and they were my friends. I don’t really know what else you expected this bankrupt country to do for Poland at the end of the war. We gave Polish people who wanted sanctuary a new home, you can hardly blame Britain or anyone else for the behaviour of the Soviets or for the fact people had to queue for bread. None of this has has anything to do with my original comments about the number of EU citizens coming here when the EU forced open the borders. You claim that these people were too proud to claim our benefits, yet David Cameron, when he realised he had to do something to try and assuage the anger British people felt about all this, he debased himself by touring European capitals begging for things like family allowance being claimed then sent straight abroad to Europe stopped. I can tell you, many people were unhappy about paying income tax then seeing their hard earned money being sent abroad. Cameron got short shrift by the arrogant EU who have no interest in national sovereignty and was sent home with his tail between his legs. The rest, as they say, is history. You are right, I do feel very fortunate to have been born an Englishman, but I fail to see why it is assumed we have to put right all the wrongs in this world. Finally, I would be very careful re your comments about Somalians and others, a bit of leakage there and you can’t afford to risk that with the eagle-eyed. mods on this forum.

PLEASE read just a little history as both Britain and France had a pact with Poland to protect each other, had Chamberlain not appeased Herr Hitler with his piece of paper speech and mobilised instead of , as Churchill put it, jaw jaw, and France too, then there would have been no war but they didn’t act. They should have been at Germany’s borders straight away If you are not prepared to read the history of how it began then there is little point is debating it and as for the Britain stood alone, well, i will leave that. I’m not going to get into something that heats me when you have not read the history behind the start of the war. Just to add the EU was meant to be for Europe to be united to avoid any such thing happening again.

Just to add the EU was meant to be for Europe to be united to avoid any such thing happening again. And I’ll thank you not to patronise me by suggesting I don’t know my history. I know very well the existence of the the Franco British Polish pact, it’s as well that we stood by that and subjected ourselves to 6 years of hell fighting Nazism. I don’t know about you, but after the horrors and loss of life from the 1914-18 war I’m not surprised every effort was made to avoid another bloodshed. Unfortunately we were up against a mentally deranged lunatic with whom it was impossible to reason. Oh, and for your information, it was Churchill who said “It’s better to Jaw Jaw than to War War” why should we have been at Germany’s borders straight away? History shows that we weren’t ready for conflict in 1939, yet we stood by Poland and France to our own detriment, with the result we had to retreat across the Channel via Dunkirk, losing many men and nearly all our material in the process. A little bit of gratitude from you really wouldn’t go amiss, my friend. The only reason the EU exists is to allow Germany and France to control Europe. If you believe anything else then you’re a gullible fool. The French are especially keen because they know they’ve never managed to defeat Germany and we’ve had to come to their rescue twice, and they’re eternally ungrateful about that. Look at their childish behaviour towards us ever since Brexit. You May also find your beloved Poland outside of the EU before too long. It seems the Polish state doesn’t take too kindly to the EU claiming precedence over Polish laws and constitution. What time will you then hum if they leave the wonderful EU?

As the dragons say, I’m out. I’m not going to get into this here as I come to try to get some information on the club but got sidetracked by a leading post

Oops. Evans is a twat. Surely we can all agree on that? I think most of the fans in the EFL would agree to that. 👍 UTG!

'Best point in their history': Rotherham manager offers verdict on Bristol Rovers stalemate..By Daniel Hargraves
Bristol Rovers drew 0-0 away at early promotion-contenders Rotherham United on Saturday having been under the cosh for large spells
i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9492963.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_JS342605978.jpg Rotherham United manager Steve Evans after the goalless draw against Bristol RoversRotherham United manager Steve Evans has claimed that Bristol Rovers' goalless draw away at Rotherham United on Saturday was the Gas' "best point in their history" after the Millers dominated for large spells of the contest. Rovers started the game the stronger of the two sides with a pleasing flow to their game but any early momentum started to evaporate as Rotherham begun to turn the screw as a home crowd with high expectations this season tried to spur their side on. Midfielder Christ Tiehi hit the base of the post while Josh Griffiths produced an outstanding double save to deny Sam Nombe from close range before the interval as the Gas managed to keep the score level. The Millers then squandered another handful of opportunities in the second half while Rovers struggled to get closer than 25-odd yards to the hosts' goal with the general feeling post-match being that Rotherham were unlucky not to take the three points. Speaking post-match, Evans declared: "I don't know how this game has finished 0-0. We missed chance after chance and that's the difference of winning today. I think we went to Exeter last week and I can take responsibility and say we got it completely wrong but we got it right today. "This is a good Bristol Rovers side. It's the best point that they'll ever get in their history because they hardly got out of their half but when you lay seige to the goal like that you have to punish teams and you have to take the chances. "We've tried every striker at the football club on the pitch today to try and get us the goal but it just wouldn't happen. They rode their luck as well. They had ricochets and things go hit the crossbar, hit the post, but we'll take a lot of positives from that and we'll go again Monday. "It's just about us taking our chances," the Rotherham manager added. "I think anyone who watches the highlights will see it. The Millers support were with us until the 97th minute yesterday because they felt the goal was coming. If they could have sucked it in, they would have sucked it in but it just wasn't meant to be." Having been relegated from the Championship last season, Rotherham are amongst the early favourites for promotion which made it a particularly satisfying point for Rovers who kept back-to-back clean sheets in the league, something they didn't manage during the entirety of last term. The Gas had five shots with one on target compared to the Millers' 20 with five on target with Isaac Hutchinson's first half effort the only time Rovers tested Rotherham goalkeeper Dillon Phillips. However, they arguably had the best opportunity of the second half when Grant Ward produced an excellent cross for Luke McCormick to latch onto, with the substitute firing wide. "We've limited a counterattacking team to the odd pop at goal, maybe a couple," Evans said. "One first half and one second half I remember when they counterattacked. "We had to be careful as well. We had some big players on a yellow card early in the game. They had none. Only Neil Hair the referee will understand why that is but they had none. I'll ask him and he'll give me his explanations but that's not any reason why we didn't win the game today. We were really positive in our play. The changes were positive, the substitutes came on and had an impact. "Everyone around the country will look at today and say we've started with one point out of six but we've achieved some things today. First clean sheet, first point of the season and a real dominant performance against a team that will do okay in League One."
