I remember him fairly well. A really good player with 1 Welsh cap, I think. He was part of our great League Cup wins and runs and was a really good attacking player. Not so good, iirc, defensively. But he was an important part of our near promotion challenges in 69/70, 70/71 and 71/72 before getting a career ending injury. Against Brentford. I think but may be wrong. Our midfield always looked good with Wayne Jones in the team but I guess the midfield which developed after his injury, Stephens, Prince, Stanton and Dobson was much more solid and earned us that promotion in 1974.
UTG!

UTG! I suppose the term 'midfielder' was quite new then ? In my memory Wayne Jones was just after Ray Mabbutt ? and as you mention the promotion era midfield wasnt Bryan Godfrey still around then ?

No, I think Brian Godfrey left in the close season before we went up but he definitely wasn’t part of the promotion team although he captained our Watney Cup team in Summer 1972. UTG!

Godfrey came in the swap with Ray Graydon in 1971 (?) I think and Wayne’s injury late 1972, I think. Now Bill Dodgin! He was a great manager, seen it all and done it all. Lovey bloke. UTG!

After he was forced to retire Wayne Jones played for a while for the Supporters Club Sunday League team. I played against him on one occasion. He had a shot from outside the box, which hit me in the stomach. The ball rebounded to Wayne, who next touch, curled it into the far top corner. I could only stand back and admire. Loved watching him play in the late 60's, early 70's.

I remember him well, excellent player and a lovely guy.
A few of us were having a kick around on the St. Georges Park five-a-side pitch in the early 70's.
Wayne happened to be walking by and joined in. I was the goalkeeper and saved a penalty against him. He insisted on taking it again... and I saved it again.
With a broad smile, he said: "Well-done lad, two great saves".
I don't know to this day if he held back on the penalties but it made my day and provided a lifelong memory.

He was a very skillful player but lacked a bit of pace. Loved watching him and was at Burden Park when he scored two screamers against 2nd division Bolton in the FA Cup to set up a tie away at Everton, which we lost 1-0 to a Joe Royal goal. The team gave its all that night and should have come away with at least a draw. We attracted a crowd of 54,000. Rumours were that Newcastle were interested in him.

Nine Jones boys, I reckon.
My personal fave is Vaughan. Centre-back, full-back, whatever, Vaughan was hard and fair in the tackle, a good passer of the ball, and of course an effective captain... who can forget 1989/90.
We share a birth date. Happy birthday Vaughan, for Thursday week... he's younger than me 😎

His heart and soul was Rovers as a player and still is as a supporter today.

I can't forget him coming back from injury and going in, Joner-like, for a tackle in the first few minutes, and then being back out injured for quite a spell aaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!

I have a distant memory of an article in a Football League Review, the freebie in the program. It was about commentators nightmare and a game between Rovers and Fulham, bit hazy about actual numbers but I think they said the game had Four Jones Three Taylor One Jarman One Jarvis.

...and eight of the Williams variety.
David. All-round class. If only he was running our midfield now. A powerful shot, and usually long-range.

I remember a Rovers v Fulham match where both managers were Bobby Campbell's. I think that Rovers had 2 Williams in the side Johnny and Bobby and 2 Jones Bobby and Wayne at one time. I have remembered another name from the past,I can remember the crowd chanting his name but thats all I can remember about Joe Gadston, anyone remember him ?..... Sorry about using the word remember so many times....someone is bound to bring it up.

Not sure if this is the game that you are trying to remember, but 1969/70 Fulham v Rovers was covered by The Big Match. There is a video on YouTube showing the first half only. Managers were father and son, both Bill Dodgin. Rovers had Larry and Stuart Taylor. Wayne Jones started the game and Bobby Jones was sub. Looks like Johnny and Bobby Williams had left the club at the end of the previous season.
Both Rovers and Fulham had unrelated managers called Bobby Campbell in the late 1970's, but this was after Wayne & Bobby Jones, and Bobby & Johnny Williams.

I ran the line one winter's evening at Huddersfield's old ground( They now of course have a brand spanker like most clubs).Got there very early and Wayne met and welcomed me.He was their physio and very friendly.
