Bristol Rovers are bracing themselves for bids for highly-rated defender Michael Smith this summer. Sky Sports understands the likes of Brentford, Barnsley and Peterborough are all monitoring Smith's situation at Rovers following their relegation from the Football League. Smith has attracted the interest of a host of clubs after an impressive season for Rovers despite their relegation. The 25-year-old, who is entering the final year of his contract at the Memorial Stadium, was named in the PFA's League Two team of the year last term and also scooped the club's player of the season prize following a stellar campaign. Bristol Rovers are reluctant to lose Smith and have offered him a new deal, but they may struggle to match offers from elsewhere with the player keen to play at the highest level possible. www1.skysports.com/football/news/11763/9336785

I think this is a rehash of the EP article from a week or two ago. Peterborough have already denied an interest in Smudger as he isn't young enough (albeit to throw other clubs off the scent, perhaps?) so I don't think this is through 'Sky Sources' or anything like that.
It still seems inevitable that we will receive offers for him but I would love nothing more than for him to sign a new deal. That way if he does go we will be in as good position to command a very good fee and if he stays we keep our best player. Win win.

For some reason I get the feeling he might just stay, maybe just for the one season. He is the type of player to blame himself for our plight when he reality he did all he could and shouldn't blame himself.

As he has just married a directors daughter, he may want to stay in the area

It's a non story from a lazy journalist. Loads of good players could be tempted by three or four clubs in divisions higher than the one they are in. This bloke has not spoken to the players or the clubs he's just re hashing stuff from other rumour mills and agent speak. Must be difficult for the journos with so many people on holiday or focusing on the World Cup. They've got to dredge stories up from somewhere and Rovers going out the league will be fair game because non of the players want to be thought of as non-leaguers

He bought a new car yesterday. If he can buy a house in the area next then we are all set. Or he's going to the red side.

He bought a new car yesterday. Was it a blue one? Might be a clue?

I hope he stays, bags more ability that O'Toole with the added bonus of not being a complete ****.
Smith was too good for us in League 2. I cannot see him staying.
