Link to London articleTom Lockyer has taken up the clause allowing him to leave Charlton Athletic. The Wales international now has a month to find himself a new club before it activates. It means the Addicks still have a slim chance of persuading Lockyer that his future does still lie in SE7. But that is only likely to be possible if the 25-year-old could see positive changes at the South London club – with doubts over the long-term future. When Charlton were relegated from the Championship there was an option in Lockyer’s favour for him to leave for nothing. Swansea City were also interested in the centre-back before he opted to join the Addicks last summer after becoming a free agent at Bristol Rovers. Lockyer had a set timescale in which he had to trigger his clause and it now leaves him in a position where he can weigh up his best options over the next month. He played every minute in 43 matches for the South Londoners last season – only missing the other three games due to suspension.

Sounds like a Charlton version of JJ O'Toole! Personally I don't agree with these contract clauses, TL was happy enough to move to Charlton and should show them some loyalty and try to get them promoted at the first attempt.

It was reported that the 6unt who manages the Welsh side told him that he needed
to be playing in the championship to stay in the Welsh squad.

It always makes me cringe when I hear stories like this, the player was eager to take presumably the higher wage and played in the side all season so like it or not was part and pearcel of their demise but now wants out, it is almost as if he is saying , "hey look at me I am much more important than Div 3 and this football club and that comes across as shoddy to me. He should maybe take a leaf out of a former colleague's of his book, stick with them and hopefully get back up this coming season.

Before people lay the boot in to tom they need to look at the turmoil at the top of the club which pushed them into financial crisis just before the virus events.

Why wouldn't a professional footballer, with a limited period of earning good money, look to protect himself or his family by enacting such a clause. The massive gulf between wages in the Championship and L1 (typically 5-6 times as much) would make any individual want to protect their interests.
With Tom, this includes trying to protect his international status. There are a number of up and coming Welsh centre backs that are all challenging for those limited international caps. If he drops to L1, rightly or wrongly, he'd fall down the pecking order.
Of course, these arguments may crumble if he eventually joins a L1 club, but Charlton are a bit of a basket case regarding ownership at the moment. Probably better for Tom to enact the clause and take his chances on the market.

They were a disgrace to L1 as were Luton and Barnsley who only stayed up because of 3 disastrous teams. Good luck Tom, Cardiff please
