From today's BEP;
“I put an offer on the table for a striker, but the lad has opted to go to Dagenham,” said Clarke. “I am really disappointed with that one because he had real presence and we had agreed terms. The wide player I have been tracking for a while is very, very expensive, so it is back to the drawing board on that front.”
With the deadly combination of Clarke's change for change sake poorly understood and poorly executed game plans and the Boards new bargain basement budget we could be in for a season that will comfortably surpass all others for unmitigated incompetence and under achievement.

What a waste of time.Surely it was obvious weeks ago if somebody was "very,very expensive". Watch out Conference we are after some "very,very cheap players to bolster our team that has taken 1 point out of six!! Surely this player who is very,very expensive is not going to get a team as we have a "very,very good budget for the Conference". I feel today that we are getting to the stage where soon supporters will be saying football is very,very expensive and they will find something else to do. A crowd of 6000 will become a rarity. Back to the money aspect I think the club are making a joke of themselves because I know the budget had to be reduced but surely it should have been kept at a level which enabled us to compete at the right end of this league. I still think we have to give the team till October to see what unfolds but how long can we go on without a couple of quality signings? Mr Higgs and the Board please speculate to accumulate to avoid seing 3000 at the Mem.

Clarke hasn't got many, if any contacts, I think that's plain to see! All he has done so far is sign his mates and ex Salisbury players! I will hold my hand up if I am proven wrong, but I can't see DC pull information anybody decent out the bag

Let's be honest, if he isn't able to pay what players want then the only players he is likely to get are those who he can sway by previous working relationships.
Mansell and Monkhouse were swayed by 2 year contracts.
People like Zavon Hines (assuming that is the D&R player we missed out on) aren't going to drop to Conference unless there is incentive!

It's a good job he put " DRAWING " in or we might have got the wrong idea.

In your mind these two things were completely unrelated previously and now it is the board who need to step in and speculate? Some consistency in your logic would be useful.

When was the last time we actually bought a player,we always seem to be after free transfers and loans,you are very lucky if you get a decent player with that strategy.Apparently we have several millionaires on our board and while I don't expect them to throw money at the club a little bit of sensible investment is what is needed otherwise it wouldn't make any difference if they were all skint.

Unfortunately that isn't true - the BoD are having to cover our losses. Which we accrue by signing free transfer players and paying their wages and other costs associated to running Bristol Rovers. At the Q&A it was confirmed that they budget for 6000 gates for home games but operate at a 9000 average break even (or something similar). Whether they have made the right choices with regard to the way the club is run is another debate. However without them funding the bottomless pit (i.e. if they were all skint) things would be a lot lot bleaker I think; unless we could find other people who would cover the losses and run the club in a better way until the losses became profit. It's a bit of a vicious circle really We need them to cover losses ---> More losses accrue ---> We need them even more to cover our losses ---> More losses accrue ---> Possible new investor (not suitable) ---> We need them to cover our losses ---> ad infinitum. So basically the board have the club and its fans by the short and curlys, our only hope is that they change and start running the club better, or UWE happens and they sell up and we hope the new investors are good reasonable people.

The only good news I guess is that we needed (past tense) 9500 to break even, and have since apparently taken £1.5 million in costs out of the business, whilst losing £500k by relegation/rugby leaving. Back of fag packet calc indicates break even is now 'only' 7300. Although quoting a break even figure in terms of number of attendees is always going to be a lie, as surely depends on ratio of kids to adults, pay on day to early bird to pre- bought (seaosn ticket holders) to complimentaries distribution graph and resultant average spend per person, which no doubt changes match by match with kick off times/ ticket offers varying the populations of each sector. Carry on.......

with regards to recruitment its become obvious that we havnt got a big budget for this level or that most of the budget is taken up by miildenhall,brown,parkes etc,,,

I also think that since we were told we would have a "good" budget for the league that possibly that budget has been cut back signiciantly - especially seeing as the club didn't seem to know or understand the cost of relegation until well after they should have.

I still cannot believe that we have no ties or links to any clubs in higher divisions. We couldnt get anyone in on loan towards the end of last season but our relgation rivals did. I not everyone likes the way clubs such as Yeovil use so many loan players, but looks where its got them. I would take 11 loanees if we could just to try and stop the rot.

Seems the striker we've missed out on is Christian Doidge, who scored 18 goals for Carmarthen Town last season.
