In truth until the 70th minute this game was not much better than Tuesday night as our boring style of football results in a lot of one too many passes back that put us in more trouble than we were in to start with. Our strikers were totally isolated and were left for long periods just chasing around totally outnumbered with little hope of actually winning the ball back that was constantly given away with long pumps from the back. Two changes from Tuesday with Leahy rightfully preferred to Kelly and Smith favoured over Nichols and at last GC took the Captancy away from Ollie Clarke but still selected him despite continual poor performances. I will never support playing three defensive midfielders at home and it is unfortunate that our central defenders have now started making mistakes where previous to the last three games they have looked solid and very hard to beat.
Jaakkola 7.5 An excellent keeper who kept us in this game with some excellent stops and for me is our best keeper for a number of years-probably since Steve Phillips.
Davies 5 His poorest game this season and suddenly the last three matches our central defenders have looked in trouble and likely to concede goals which is not helpful when we are struggling to score .
Craig 5 Ironic that when he finally took up his rightful role as Captain he gave away the second goal with a very poor clearance and was subsequently replaced but in all honesty yesterday it could have been any of the centre halves who were not at their best.
Kilgour 4 Too many poor decisions and mistakes but he is worth persevering with because he hasn't done a lot wrong.
Rodman 6 Some exciting moments and some poor ones. He is well capable of getting 10 goals this season and brought us back into the game with a sharp finish from close in when I had actually given up hope of seeing us score .
Upson 6.5 Really good first half with two decent strikes that were about as close to a goal that we got and worked hard to try to get us moving. Faded in the second half and was replaced
Ogogo 8 MOM The best of the midfield and the team but the problem is that GC seems to feel that we need the three defensive midfielders in there no matter what- for me Clarke is just getting in the way of the other two and if we can add some creativity then we will see much more use being made of Ogogo's ability to win the ball. First half particularly he really fought for every ball.
Clarke 4 Better than Tuesday but only just and should not have started. Rightfully replaced as Captain but couldn't believe he was in the starting line up and did nothing really to make me think I was wrong in my opinion.
Leahy 4.5 the b est we have available for the position at the moment but for me there is too much negative passing backwards from him and haven't seen a lot of the quality crossing that he is supposed to have although he did improve as the game went on.
Smith 4 Ran and ran and ran but that was about it. Too lightweight for the "Coughlan plan" and we just didn't really look like scoring again and one of our problems is that he is honestly not much better than Nichols but some of that could be down to the awful service we provide our strikers with but in truth all our strikers except the much missed JCH struggle to strike a match!!
Adeboyejo 5.5 Poor service didn't help him but there is something there although I am not sure it is a goalscorer.
Subs: Sercombe 7 Made the difference as we suddenly got a grip in midfield and looked to go forward through the midfield rather than over it. If he was fit enough to come o9n then in my opinion he should have started over Ollie Clarke.
Little NOLE Strange substitution but didn't have long to get into the game.
Bennett NOLE At least he does have the ability to hold onto the ball and does not see it as a hot potato! I have the feeling that he has become totally disillusioned with things and it will probably be best when he moves on and IMO GC thinks so too.
Crowd 7 Got behind the team after an awful start and eventually had something to cheer about. Had the game had another ten minutes I have the feeling we would have come away with what probably would have been an undeserved three points against a Pompey side who I can see why they have struggled this season and have the feeling it was our performance again which made them look better than they actually are.
Ref 4 Too many wrong decisions though not sure about the penalty other than both teams seemed surprised by the decision but surely we should have had a penalty in the second half if not two.
Portsmouth 6.5 They have some good players but for me were probably the worst Pompey team I have seen in a few years and I think they must have wished until the last twenty minutes that they could play us every week!
GC- Not going to write him off as most of his signings have been good and he has suffered by having to try to offload poor players signed by DC and didn't really stand much chance of doing it but the quicker he gets out of the three defensive midfielders at home ,the better as it really is hard to watch at times and I am sure that had it not been for the two late goals it would have been meltdown on here last night.
I can't say I am really looking forward to Rochdale next week as it is not a happy hunting ground but it is a winnable game if we actually set out to win it. UTG

The Little substitution was only strange in that it was not earlier, it allowed us to get on front fide with a 4 4 2. Oh, and Sercombe played left side then and was more involved as was Rodman on right side.
Leahy struggled as was closed down so quickly and with no wide support all he could do was pass back.
First half could argue that the slow build up did work as eventually we got an attack going.

Thought early doors Jaakkola should be MOM as we could have gone 3 or 4 down but for a couple of saves, but no problem with Ogogo getting it, as he did yesterday.
Great to see a good reception for Ellis.
Worst thing of the day was the colour of Pompey's kit.

Even though I was there, I still enjoy reading stevek192 reports. My only additional comment is that we never stopped trying and that paid dividends in us getting the goals. It wasn’t a good game to watch and Pompey will feel robbed as well as soaked. There were fisticuffs all over the place , before and after the game. There is even a photo of a fifty something , displaying a robbed Pompey flag ! Ok, I used to get involved but surely blokes of my age shouldn’t be doing this

Leahy first half, crosses & corners kept over hitting the ball past the back stick to nobody, even passes are over hit, wasted a lot of good opportunities!...but he does put a good shift in and does not shirk a challenge!...

I don’t agree with the view on the goalkeeper, he is a menace in many ways. He should have caught the attempted header that led to Leahy conceding the penalty and two later saves in the first half were direct results of similar errors. Another habit is parrying away shots straight into the path of oncoming strikers which have already resulted in goals against. He is anchored to his goal line and their second goal was a case in point. On another issue the 3 centre back formation is a busted flush it was the 4-4-2 that created the impetuous for the come back. The overwhelming conclusion though remains the same we have two versions of Rovers the negative ponderous side at the moment or the driven side we see with JCH up front.

First half wind was behind the Blackthorn making it tricky for keeps to read the flight.

Broadly agree with the match reports except the substitutions made perfect sense as we switched to 4-4-2. Also thought rodman had a really game.

We did the exact same thing yesterday that we do when we have JCH fit, the difference is that he bullies defenders, and crosses which go just over the heads of our other players become goal scoring opportunities when he plays. In terms of goal threat, we are a 1 man team. 1 shot on target in a home game. Against a team with carthorses for central defenders. Disgraceful.

Pompey fans had a lovely ditty, singing how 5hiT we are. Made I laugh tbh as, for large periods, we were just that BUT credit where it’s due, we never had heads go down and this plus fitness proved to be the one thing that gave us a point. Were I a Pompey fan, I’d feel mugged but I feel it all balances out over a season. Lee Brown looked much bigger and muscular. They were a big team compared to use or was it that figure hugging kit ?

I can't say I am really looking forward to Rochdale next week as it is not a happy hunting ground but it is a winnable game if we actually set out to win it. UTG Excellent report. I came away from the game very happy. It was a really exciting end. A bit like Liverpool drawing at Man U, they didn't play well but still got something. We've had 4 games without JCH and picked up 4 points, 4 more than it could have been, we do rely heavily on him, but our other players proved yesterday they can force a draw when all seemed lost. www.footstats.co.uk/index.cfm?task=league_shotsRovers are currently 6th in the league on number of shots 183, 21 more than Ipswich, 41 less than Doncaster. Where would Ipswich be without Norwood, Donny have clearly missed Marquis. We're doing ok, it's not all doom and gloom. Our keeper has faced on average 3.7 shots per game, compare that to Bolton's 6.7 and it shows we're not defending that badly either as a team. He's a good keeper and his kicking is pretty consistent. He makes good saves, sometimes ones he shouldn't which is the mark of a good keeper. Better than Bonham. Kept us in it yesterday and deserves credit. I don't get the Leahy negativity, he can cross the ball, he's always offering for it, especially first half, you could see the massive difference from Tuesday and he's a decent defender. The push was a bit obvious but I thought he played well. Rodman was excellent yesterday and a MOM candidate. He wins a lot in the air and is direct going forward. A real team player sacrificing his normal game to play right back. The back 3 were under pressure but didn't think they were that bad. Craig doesn't make those mistakes often and i was pleased to see him captain. It won't change his game like it did for OC. We kept them at arms length apart from the goals, I don't think Marquis had too much joy, though he played well himself. Ogogo was MOM, his tackling is immense, he does his job, win it, give it to Upson, he's a really good signing. Upson was his usual self yesterday, better than Tuesday. Clarke was better, but still would not start if Sercs is fit. Gives the ball away too much. Smith didn't use his pace against the defenders when he got the ball, a poor game from him, he's not the answer. Adebayjo doesn't look like scoring either, not at this level. Sercombe made a big difference, he carries the ball with pace which is what we lacked. Little was the right change to release Rodman and go 4-4-2, they were only playing 1 upfront at that stage so no need for 3 at the back, it worked, well done for plan b GC. It's been levelled at him that he doesn't have a plan b, well he did yesterday and got what he deserved. His post match interview was interesting, he seems to be aware of the criticism and while he's not everyone's cup of tea, he doesn't give 2 or even 3 5hiTs.. He's a new manager cutting his teeth at a decent level and they're competing. It's not all pretty passes and worldy goals, it's bloody tough in L1 and takes no prisoners. Nice to see Nichols not played yesterday, good call. We had the Pompey fans about 10 feet away from us, so we started the ' 2-0 and you effd it up ' song which went down a treat. They have good players and should have won but I think they'll be up there in the top 6 come May, Jackett seems to have weathered the storm. I reckon I've seen Portsmouth more than any other team down the years. It was great to get a point off them right at the death. I left the ground very happy. UTG.
