IMO it may well be that Saturdays defeat or should I say the nature of the defeat could prove to be a blessing in disguise to our chances of avoiding relegation because had we either won Saturday or played very well and unfortunately lost then both Manager and Board could have looked at it and decided that signings were not necessary and that the present squad was good enough to keep us up. Now after the nature of the defeat where we were absolutely awful and on the back of the draw at Accrington and the draw at home to Burton neither of which we were particularly good surely the Owners and the Manager will both be alarmed and want to ensure that we are good enough to face the months ahead? You would certainly hope that the Owners have looked at the finances and realised that sometime as an owner you have to speculate to accumulate and this time has now been reached. The cost of relegation will be phenomenal even compared to last time we were relegated as we fans will not be as forgiving this time if our forward trend is halted and we head back to stage 1. That has been shown this season with failure to make adequate signings by DC has resulted in crowds that are around 2000 down on last season and the reason is not only the results but also down to fans seeing doubting both the intentions and the integrity of the owners. Failure to allow three or even four signings to be made now and particularly strikers with a goalscoring record will not be forgiven by fans who have watched the most pathetic striking record I can remember in 50 odd years of watching.
I can understand the position that GC is in he is not going to go down the road of criticising the Board - he doesn't need to as it will be clear now for all to see. It is also clear that DC was as much to blame for the problems we now face by signing too many players of limited or should I say the same ability as those we had. We certainly are not short of players but we are short of players who can actually make a difference .It actually embarrassed me Saturday when Akinfenwa came on and we see his lack of fitness and huge figure and yet it is almost certain that he would have done a better job than all our forwards put together this season and together would also have probably brought more out of the strikers we have.
It is clear for everybody to see that we need at least three players all of whom have at least League 1 pedigree and are better than what we have and that is not going to come cheap. The tall striker who leads the attack is the absolute priority particularly if GC is going to persevere with the kick and rush which is probably the only "style" we can play with our back four the way they are. We are playing this style without the tools to actually accomplish it!! Payne is suffering the main buck of the fans but is he really to blame . Has he ever been the out and out leader of the attack? I don't think so and am sure that we have not seen anywhere near the best from him. We needed in the summer a Devante Cole or a Tom Eaves , it was clear then and even clearer now. we present no threat in the air whatsoever to any team in this division and teams know that if they have a huge centre half we have no way of competing at either end of the pitch. I see two strikers,a left midfielder and possibly another central midfielder as essential or I fear we will be way adrift of safety by mid to end of February certainly based on the last two home games.
Now we will all find out just what the ambition of our owners is. I fear that they are going to be found wanting and it is not a nice thought! The defeat Saturday proved a point but can only be a blessing in disguise if it spurs the owners and Manager into action.
