Tom Nichols Twin? Club News Rovers Tie Up Deal for AFC Bournemouth Product Sam Matthews Photo property of Bristol Rovers Football Club. AFC Bournemouth midfielder Sam Matthews became Rovers second signing of the summer when he today penned a contract with the club that will take effect from 1st July. Manager Darrell Clarke said he was delighted that Sam had agreed to the move; “Sam is a very talented young player whose progress I have monitored for a while now. “He has worked hard and, learnt a great deal, from his time at Bournemouth and, of course, during his loan spell at Eastleigh in the National League last season. “We had to compete with a number of other clubs for his signature and I am delighted that he has chosen to join us “His arrival will intensify competition for first team places at the club and I look forward to working with him.” Upon siging, Sam had this to say; "I was on loan at Eastleigh last season and played quite a lot of games in the National League and then had some interest from other clubs, Rovers being one of them. Nicknamed ,'Stan'. "I met with Darrell Clarke over the summer, had a chat and as things progressed it's resulted in me signing today and I'm really happy to get it done. "He told about the club itself, the squad the he has here and told me there's great spirit amongst the players."

Young Sam aged 21 has been at Bournemouth since he was 10 years old. Last season he played 39 games for Eastleigh on loan 6 goals including a hat trick v Solihull Moors. Previously had experience at Braintree. One for the future ...development squad maybe ?

Sounds a good signing. We've got a couple from Bournemouth. Good relationship to have. Better than when we were signing loans from Port Vale

Any signing is good but we need players who can play in the first team from the off. We have enough talented players lower down who never get a look in why add more ?

Thought development squad players were announced as such, if so he is a first team squad addition.

He's for the first team going by his interview. POTS at Eastliegh in the 5th tier.Think he prefers middle middle, so with we have some competition in midfield. His season inn the 5th would of done him good.

Little niggling worry that a bigger club are in for sercombe as we seem overloaded for central midfield players. Hopefully not the case.

Little niggling worry that a bigger club are in for sercombe as we seem overloaded for central midfield players. Hopefully not the case. If so it’s good to see us preparing for the possibility rather than reacting at the last minute as in the past. If not then our midfield already looks strong. Good signing who doesn’t break the bank I would have thought. UTG!

Pleased with the philosophy of this signing.....been with B'mouth throughout their meteoric rise, got to have some very good points and ethics as well as talent.

When AFC Bournemouth hosted Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly in July 2013, 16 year old midfielder Sam Matthews appeared as a 73rd-minute substitute for Ryan Fraser against a side featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modrić and Mesut Özil. Good experience for the youngster. Just checked he is on 5 7 and like Luke Russe is fairly light weight. But his experience in the Conference will no doubt have toughened him up.

Shorter midfield players would be Alan Ball & Paul Scholes....perhaps a different level of ability, but just making a comment.

The posh to date have signed 7 new players already. Surely it can't be that difficult. You are looking at probably 10 new players for them come the beginning of the season. We don't need a clear out but signing new players seems to come easy for some teams why not us !

Chris Hargreaves would know Sam well from his coaching days at Bournemouth.

I would hope it is because the ones we are after are in high demand and do not feel it necessary to rush a decision.
We have had plenty of seasons where we have signed a large number of new players and it tended not to end well. Personally i am happy with the early signings and happy enough to wait on any more.
My bigger concern is the fact i got a letter today stating that i have not renewed my season ticket yet, when i did so ages ago! And i want to see the new kits!
