Defensive Midfield, 5'11" and quite physical with stamina for days. Brings healthy competition for places and good experience at League One level and some at Championship level with his previous clubs including MK Dons, Millwall and Ipswich.
FIFA database ranks him with 'high' attacking and defensive work rates, perhaps DC plans to use him as a pressing option while Sercombe and Lines wait to receive the interceptions and recycle the loose balls up to the front line. If that's the case, we have a pressuring CM in both him and Sincs to rotate.
Great to see us making early moves in the Summer, UTG.

The Club are pleased to announce the signing of midfielder Ed Upson.
The signing of Upson is the first arrival of the summer for Rovers, as the twenty-eight-year-old joins the club as a free-agent, effective from the 1st July. Upson was most recently part of the squad at MK Dons, where he featured heavily last season, tallying just shy of fifty appearances during the 2017/18 campaign.
Speaking about the new addition to his squad, Manager Darrell Clarke added, "Ed is someone that I have admired for a number of years, he adds healthy competition to the central midfield positions and we are looking forward to having him on board.”
After finalising the paperwork at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon, Ed said "I met the Manager early in the week and he's a very ambitious person and I know the club is also very ambitious. I think the mixture of those two things could propel the club into the next division.”

Good signing, I remember him playing against us for Yeovil. I hated him then for dominating their midfield, hope he can do the same for us!

I recall he scored twice against us for Yeovil Town in their 3-0 victory at the Mem in JPT tie 1 Sept 2012.
Upson also played in the four matches for MK Dons against us in the past two seasons.

Three seasons in The Championship (2013-15) with two different clubs (Yeovil and Millwall).
His last four seasons have seen him play 26, 32, 42 and 37 league games, so that is probably sign of his resiliency and stamina.
If the MKD and Yeovil comments on Twitter are anything to go by, we have landed a pretty handy player.
On paper, this looks like very good business for Rovers and it is also nice to get what appears to be a 'key' signing in the building so quickly.

Bennett, Sercombe & Upson for a combined total of 125k.
Unreal business.

Maybe now play sercombe a bit further forward to get at least 20 goals out of him. He is one of the few natural goalscorers we have at the moment.

Great to see us making early moves in the Summer, UTG. Totally agree. It feels like the last 4/5 years we left it far too late for new players to gel. Great news and welcome aboard Ed.

Don't they have to get business done before the first game of the season this time?

Good signing on paper and I wish him the best of luck, let's hope this is a sign we are aiming to do all our business early.

This is a very, very, very good signing for you.
I obviously know his game from his time at Yeovil and he was a superb player for us. Scored the late winner in the League One playoff semi final v Sheffield United that sent us to Wembley, having already threaded a pinpoint pass through to Kevin Dawson to score the first goal.
Good going forward, can do a job at DM if needs be. Had the ability to ping one in from long distance and good from free kicks (think he scored two v Rovers in the JPT one year IIRC).
Off the pitch, one of the nicest fellas I have ever met in football. I'd call him a friend to be honest.... have been out for meals with him and his partner, he kindly got me a shirt last season to auction for a charity and although I'm gutted he's not coming back to Yeovil, at least he'll be fairly local to me.
Great signing, Gasheads.
