We all know the derogatory name of gas heads which we embraced.
It was common knowledge that the river next to AG was renowned for backing up the main Bristol sewer pipe and historically this was renowned to smell awfull.
My theory is that this is why old school gashesds called city she teds. Our ground smelled of gas, so we returned this insult referencing the whiff of sewage around their ground.
Can any old gasheads verify this?

That's pretty much how I remember it. Childish, but mildly amusing at the time

You say that we all know the name of gas heads but I don't think that everyone realises what the word "head" meant in those days,it was a very derogatory term for someone with mental health issues the same as "window licker" or "ming mong" these days, none of which expressions I use. So the city lot were saying that breathing in the gas at Eastville had made you mentally ill thus a "gas head". I wonder if people would call themselves "gasmingmongs" or "gaswindowlickers" ? probably not. I suppose that "gas head" would only apply to people who went to Eastville before the gas stopped being made there in 72 or 73 ? didn't breathe it couldn't be effected.
Yes city and sh*tty rhyme but also as you say the Cut did used to stink and when we all used to walk to AG people used to say that the smell got worse the nearer we got to AG. Also the tannery of Thomas Ware is at the end of Coronation road and it smells pretty vile on occasion too. The word "sh*thead" is quite a common term of abuse anyway so it just seemed a good retaliation for the "gas head" jibe at the time.

The birth of the term GasHead led to the reciprocal conception of Sh*tHead, circa mid 80s. At least, that was when I became aware of it as a teenager..
Turning up at Trashton in Gas ski hat in 1986/7 where I was told to f off gashead.....at the time I can't remember using the word s*head because it wasn't in use, when I kicked him in the goolies! (good old 80s word!)

The word Sh1thead has been around for many years, (certainly before 1982! It is a noun to describe (courtesy of Google) ,a dumbass, genuine moron, ignorant, narrow minded, unintelligent individual, Sound familiar? so I dont think the stinking River Avon spawned '82s name Whereas Gashead is described as a name given to followers of Bristol Rovers remembering their former Eastville ground adjacent to a large gasworks. The joke is the dopey sods thought they were insulting us by dubbing us as Gasheads when it was actually the nicest and most respectful name anyone could call us!

Whether or not it is actually true is irrelevant. sheetheads sheetheads sheetheads

I remember a chant 'what do you think of city?sh!t,what do you think of sh!t ? city' this was around 77 or 78,I remember one lad having it tattooed down his arm, so Rovers were calling city "sh1t" then but I cant remember when I first heard "sh1thead" meaning city fans.
