Congratulations to both our recent and upcoming opponents Rochdale and Wigan for their magnificent FA Cup exploits. Tv pundits alluding to how are the Dale bottom of league one and how classy are the Latics after knocking three Premier league clubs out of the Cup. It puts our league one into the mix with some standout players and no doubt potential transfer targets. Interesting to hear the Rochdale model of producing players to sell on and their £1.5million profit they made this year. We were grateful to pay them £250k for a talented player in Rickie Lambert.
Looking at the history of Wigan Athletic highlighted on tv last night by BBC and the modest Roberto Martinez it really is a remarkable journey. Elected to the FL in 1978 and eight seasons in the Premier League besides an FA Cup final win. Always jealous of just how they managed it. Last time we played them at the Mem in Sept 2000 our respective clubs went in opposite directions.
Little consolation that the Mem remains pretty much unchanged while the Latics enjoyed a new stadium and ultimate success. Where the hell did we go wrong !

Frankly I think in both games it was down to the shortcomings of the Premier League clubs. Both have been seen to perform very well against Premier or European clubs. Quite why they seem to struggle against L1 clubs is beyond me. Psychological maybe? In Spurs case I agree with Shearer - should have played his big guns from the start. With MC,Pep complains about tackles on his players,& lo!,he gets his player sent off. Whatever, hope it's knackered Wigan for next Tuesday.

I'm hoping Rovers can go some way next Tuesday towards replicating the results of the 1982-83 season. In the space of two months, we recorded great wins at home against Portsmouth (5-1), Bradford (4-1) and Wigan (4-0). In 2018, we've already done the job against two of them, admittedly with slightly less emphatic score-lines. For good measure, in that same autumn of 1982, Rovers even managed to fit in home wins over Millwall (4-0), Reading (3-0) and an away win at Leyton Orient (5-1).

For good measure, in that same autumn of 1982, Rovers even managed to fit in home wins over Millwall (4-0), Reading (3-0) and an away win at Leyton Orient (5-1). I was at all these games bar the orient away one. We were in the middle of a purple patch at home where almost all opponents were put to the sword. My memory is that in all of these games we would be on the front foot and would be taking the game to our opponents. The football was very attacking and exciting. Away from home save the orient game we were garbage though. Pretty certain but not checked this was during the David Williams years and before the introduction of the play offs. We seemed to always be close but never winning the coconut. I remember these days with perhaps more nostalgia than the Gerry Francis days. As far as the OP is concerned, especially pleased for Rochdale. I have a bit of a soft spot for them as a club - really friendly club and set of fans and always a good day out even if we rarely do well there.
