I watched the Oldham game on iFollow, and was a bit perplexed when their 'teams run out' music was 'Mouldy Old Dough' by Lieutenant Pigeon! I'd managed to leave that tune behind in the early '70s where it belongs, now I can't stop it playing in my head....
Anyone know WHY it's Oldham's theme tune?
And if anyone has never heard it you can find it here:

"Since 1972, the track has played over the tannoy at the beginning of Oldham Athletic A.F.C. home games which coincided with the club rising from the 4th Division to the 2nd Division." From Wikipedia.

One of my favourite songs of all time! Well that's just mental illness, Sir. I watched the TOTP clip above. That was two-and-a-half minutes I would like to erase from memory forever.

One of my favourite songs of all time! Me too. I couldn't get enough of it in 72.

No idea why Oldham use it, but do seem to remember some oiks from King's College getting some questions on the subject once. The lyrics were a comment on the recently introduced decimal currency, because things were so much better when there were 240 pennies to a pound and twelve shillings to a crown or something, it was all a bit complicated back then. It's also the only UK number 1 to feature a Mother and Son. Things were all going very well until those nasty chaps, McClaren, Vicious and Rotten came along and spoiled everything

National scandal that they didn't get knighthoods for services to music. (Or at least promotion to Sergeant for Mr Pigeon).

Don't forget the legendary Mrs Mill's on the piano - it was her nephew who fronted the band.

True, as in you are correct - At the time everyone thought it was the late great Mrs M. and have to admit for years I believed it was. I bow to your superior knowledge ........
The song’s origins are suitably quirky. It was written by two members of the group Stavely Makepeace, Nigel Fletcher and Rob Woodward and recorded in 1971 in the front room of the latter’s house in Coventry with his 59 year old mum Hilda Woodward playing one of two pianos. Despite such homespun origins the production give the piano a sharpness that makes the melody more memorable and there’s a warmth to the song despite the odd vocal moments. The group were already somewhat experimental and Hilda’s honky tonk piano playing was a regular feature of their material. Hilda was a piano teacher and bore a resemblance to Mrs Mills the world’s only other famous ivory tickling middle aged woman. For some reason record company Decca Records wanted the group to use a different name for the song hence Lieutenant Pigeon was born. The song flopped in the UK initially but became a hit in Belgium after it was for some reason used as the theme music for a current affairs programme

Oldham. One of the founder members of the Premier League. Didn't do a lot of good for them, although I would take their ground over ours anyday
