The theory Sainsbury may change their plans for the Mem site seems feasible, that being a smaller shop with more housing. Rovers still get the £30,000000 for the UWE. Nailseacookie has been told of this theory from a "decent source" just yesterday (read on otib). So did you seriously think Sainsbury's will hand over £30m but build a far smaller store, and also start from scratch with seeking pp again, which with a general election looming might not go in their favour this time. If we are start building later this summer then surely all the contracts need to be in place by mid August, with the money in the bank by the end of September. As far as the other OP saying the store wasn't a big development wasn't it actually referred to in last year's annual results as being one of their major new developments, I doubt they start work on any stores of this size each year? I "seriously" hoped so,much like everyone else it seems, that is 'hope'. If the sale price is now less, how much and how do the Board make up the difference?

There doesn't seem to be any other suggestions that Sainsbury's want to reduce the price &/or change the store plans at this late stage. You sense it is now all or nothing, hopefully it's the former and we will find out if that is the case by the end of August, if we are due to start work "later this summer".

Sainsburys aren't saying squat though, are they? So there really is no way of telling anything about "their" current position. All we have to go on is what Higgs has stated so far. As you indicate, the ONLY way to determine the real outcome of any of this is if and when we see diggers turning up at the UWE site. It's the only real way now that offers 101% proof that the stadium will go ahead, the time for talking (or taking any real notice of talk & words) has long since passed.

They are not losing money, they are just making smaller profits than they were. Any supermarket chain not capable of making a decent return in the BS7 catchment area is not going to stay in business long. They will make a very tidy profit in Horfield. Yup...no industry goes more than 10-15 years in the modern world without facing massive challenges and undergoing massive changes...Sainsbury's, retail analysts, council planners and everyone else have no idea what will be needed or will be profitable for the owners/community in 3-5-10 years time. But knowing how much stores similar to this in similar locations make in profit in a year, I would guess they're willing to risk it... We'll have to wait and see. But you are spot on, the market is changing faster than it ever has. The analysts are saying that although footfall in their stores is falling, Sainsbury's are maintaining market share and profitability by diversifying and offering a different range of products and services to the same existing customers. Worth remembering also that home delivery is growing in popularity by the day.

Why can't people stop MAKING up their ideas as to what has happened or is happening and just wait and see. We've waited for so long that a little longer is not going to make any difference. All people are doing is making up possible scenarios or in fact making up anything to use as criticism of the club. Steve, I'm not sure if that was aimed at me but if it was then I should say this is a forum for debate about all things related to the football club where fans express their views and opinions freely so I can't see any reason for not putting forward plausible scenarios for people to discuss. In answer to the posts by County Ground Hotel and Peter Parker, I accept I was not at the meeting so I've no way of forming an opinion on the emphatic way Nick and Toni stated that Sainsburys "can't pull out". But my point was that Sainsburys may well be in a position where they could quite legally and properly (in their commercial interests) delay things for so long that the Rovers finances would be exhausted and the schemes dependent on the Sainsburys money would collapse. Perhaps this is why the MP's used the words " we urge you to conclude any last remaining elements of this agreement with Bristol Rovers FC as soon as possible.” If that is the case then my suggestion is that rather than launching a "we hate Sainsburys" campaign (a bit strong I know but you get what I mean) the Rovers board would be better off searching for compromise. As you say,Neil, you are criticising from thousands of miles away and only comment on what you read on here, comments made by people who are not privy to what has gone on between the parties. As an ex director of the club you above all people should know that very little of what is discussed at board level gets to the ears of the general fan base,so you are surmising worst case scenarios at best or at worst mischief making
