Rickie had a great career spanning 19 years and 9 clubs, with 3 goals in 11 games for England. Career record is Pld 712 games and 244 goals...Rovers record Pld 128 games and 51 goals. (Just for the record on Paul Randall - Rovers record is Pld 240 games and 94 goals.) That certainly offers some perspective BUT Paul Randall played for us when we got to the second tier I believe. I’m genuinely surprised at those statistics. Thank you

Former England striker Rickie Lambert has announced his retirement from football.
The 35-year-old ex-Southampton, Liverpool and West Brom forward has been without a club since leaving Cardiff City by mutual consent in July.

Surely he could have offered something to another club. I’m genuinely shocked by this announcement

He’s made the decision so good luck to him. Better to go at the top rather than hanging on in there for a few quid and leave people wondering what the fuss was about. Thanks for what you did for us Rickie, you were a very good servant to the club and signing that contract so that we would get a pay day just shows that he recognised how important he was compared to the club. He turned himself into an England International with the more professional support he received at Southampton and will always be a legend there for what he did. He won’t get it but I hope the fans of many clubs recognise what a great servant he was for them. UTG!

Not many have grafted as much as he has to rise that far. It's a fantastic story really - even accepting that it didn't work out for him at Liverpool it was still a fairytale to end up at the club he grew up supporting and represent England. It is as close as English football can get in the modern era to a 'living the dream' like story. Having done that I can't imagine crashing back down through the leagues would hold all that much appeal to him especially as, given the type of player and build he is, he's likely to increasingly struggle to stay fit. I can completely understand why he might want to jack it in. It's a bit of a 'been there - done that' argument.

Presumably no need to get up at 6am and go to work like many of us fans.
According to Daily Mail (sic) Rickie scored 241 goals in 701 professional games for nine clubs in top four divisions. Glad we saw some good ones at the Mem and elsewhere "during his journey".

I don’t know, I remember players like Micky Shannon ( sp) who played on then turned their hands to other things. It’s his decision and it’s done but I would have liked to see him prove the Pratt Warnock wrong. I guess he really must have been on big money at Liverpool to be able to retire. Not many have the opportunity and funds to retire at 35. Best of British to him

I’ve heard so many different stories of what he was on that it impossible for me to know the truth. 15k, if true would have seen his living standards rise and expenditure too. You would be surprised at how quickly you start living to to money you get used to.

He confirmed on Sky Sports Goal Express yesterday that he had played the last 3 years with a bad back and that's why he gave up even though he was training with a League 1 club......
