Rovers' FA Cup Story 1946-47 to 2016-17 Pt 5: Conclusion
Performance
The win ratio was 57% from 1946-47 to 1968-69 (51% from 1969-70 to 2016-17).
Our record against “same-status” teams improved in the modern era (from 53% to 64%)
But we used to be better giant-killers, winning half the ties against teams one level higher
With a win-ratio of over 80% before 1970, Rovers also were less prone to upsets by minnows
From 1946-47 to 2016-17, we won 83 of all ties, against 71 defeats: a win ratio of 54%.

In 1958, the two regional Third Divisions were re-shaped into a national Third and Fourth Division.
In order to measure Rovers position relative to other clubs from 1946-47 to 1968-69, I have adopted the convention that Division 3 (N) and Division 3 (S) are third tier, but Southern League and Midland League are fifth tier, whilst Isthmian League is sixth tier.
Variety of Opponents
Of the 154 ties, only 56 have featured opponents that we haven’t met again in later seasons
Bournemouth, Fulham and Preston were the most frequent opponents (5 times each)
Twenty-four of the 71 ties in rounds 3 to 6 have been against the same seven clubs
Rovers played Aston Villa, Preston and Ipswich (4 times each) in those later rounds.
Home and Away
The draw has presented Rovers with ties at home 74 times, compared with 80 away ties.
From 1946-47 to 1968-69, the draw favoured us with 56% of ties at home (44% from 1969-70)
Replays
Of our 83 victories since 1946-47, Rovers have needed a replay 21 times
We’ve also lost replays 21 times, out of our total of 71 defeats
Cup Runs
Rovers played 11 games in the 1951 run, ending in a quarter-final replay at Eastville against eventual Cup winners Newcastle.
Rovers’ next longest run had 8 games in 6 ties, making a quarter-final against WBA in 2008
In 1969, a mere 7 games were required, Rovers losing at Everton in the fifth round.
Barnsley put a stop to our run of 5 ties in 1999
Sequences of four ties were halted in 1948 and 1958 (both by Fulham), in1952 (by Southend) and in 1964 (by Manchester United)
Other good Cup runs, in 1986, 2002 and 2007 were ended by Luton, Gillingham and Derby.
