The Luck of the Draw
Those, like me, who have watched Rovers since 1969-70 would consider Ipswich to be our most frequent opponents in the Cup. We’ve met them on four occasions, in the snow in 1978, the following year again in Round 5, on frost in 1985, and a fourth time in 1998. But if you consider all 61 seasons since 1946-47, three different names appear: Bournemouth, Fulham and Preston. Bournemouth | 1964 (Won Away R1); 1969 (Won Replay at Home R2); 2004 (Lost Away R1); 2007 (Won Replay Away R2); 2009 (Lost Away R1). | Fulham | 1948 (Lost Away R4); 1958 (Lost Away R6); 1971 (Won Away R1); 1982 (Lost H R1); 2008 (Won Replay at Home R3).
| Preston | 1952 (Won Home R3); 1957 (Lost Home R4); 1960 (Lost Replay Away R4); 1981 (Won Away R3); 2000 (Lost Home R1).

A quoted year refers to that of the competition; i.e. the year in which the Final was played.
Of the 154 ties, only 56 have featured opponents that we haven’t met again in later seasons. Five Times | Bournemouth, Fulham, Preston | Four Times | Aldershot, Aston Villa, Bristol City*, Ipswich, Leyton Orient, Luton, Southampton |
All four of the ties against Ipswich (and four of the games against Preston) were in Round 3 onwards, as were the matches against Aston Villa. Twenty-four of the 71 ties in rounds 3 to 6 have been against the same seven clubs. * Solely for the purposes of this analysis, City 1982’s record after 1982 has been grouped together with that of Bristol City.
