I have only just learned of this sad news. I went to school with Mark and stood on the Tote End terrace with him on more Saturday's than I can remember. Mark was a lovely bloke, we spoke in the club house pre-match earlier this season Can't believe this news - condolences to his family God bless you Mark - we will miss you RIP. www.family-announcements.co.uk/bristol/view/4261488/burnell

I did wonder if people knew of this but since been told it was posted some time ago on Gaschat which I missed. Without doubt this was a well liked and respected guy who was equally respected by our friends whether from Kingswood or otherwise

Bernie was a regular at the Star on Hanham Rd and we all went there after the Essex stopped selling cider to us young uns after 19:30. There was around 7-8 years age difference between us and in those days even one school year would make the difference of someone talking to you or not. I will remember Bernie as one of the older lot who always had time to come over and talk to us young uns and he would always be cool. Never ever got any put downs or patronising stuff from him, what you saw is what you got. You couldn't fail to miss him with his trademark sheepskin and bright blonde hair and he was a tall bloke. I never saw him for years then when my mum went into care, he was the guy who came with all the various medications. I was so glad of him being there because it can be very very hard to visit a loved one with Alzheimer's. We had some great chats about the star and what went on in there, about the archers and about sludge. There is no way anyone would habe thought him depressed and it where we collectively need to encourage people to talk about this rather than bottle,it up. The last time I saw him at a game was at THAT Wycombe game. He seemed to be having a great time and was with the old boys on that day. I never knew him well but well enough to stop and chat and sometimes for a fair old while. I think his family wanted to keep the manner of his passing on the down low and it's why I never posted it on here plus, with this being thenforum with more of the old boys on it I just took it for granted that people knew. RIP Big Bernie, I certainly enjoyed your company and in yountelling me a few stories of away days. I know this has been taken very badly by a fair few. My sincere condolences to the Burrell family.

Still can't believe this news, Mark was the first lad I made friends with at Speedwell school, I walked into the form classroom for the very first time and did not recognise one face from my junior school [1st day of secondary school] - This tall skinny lad waved at me and shouted 'Sit here mate' and so I did. Then he asked 'Rovers or C*ty?' - Rovers I replied, we were then good friends throughout my time at Speedwell, and we attended so many games home and away. We use to hang out together during the summer holidays and I knew his mum dad and sister really well., as did he mine.
I saw Mark a few times up at the Mem over the past few years, he always took time to talk to me and my wife, he had mellowed a lot from our youth, but then, most of us have. When we played Doncaster at the Millennium stadium Mark and his family were sat directly behind me and my family, 45,000 Gas heads, what were the chances of that, we had not seen each other in over 20 years!! - If you watch the DVD [Sky TV] during the national anthem [at the start] yep, that's me and my wife and her mum, Mark and his family were stood behind us, how he laughed when he saw my face beaming across that stadium!!
God bless you and your family Mark. RIP.

Nice memories you shared there. We never ever know who gets afflicted and especially with those that put on a brave face and suck it up. A very well liked man. I know that even though they had fallen out, Sludge is beside himself with this. We've lost a fair few in the last 18 months. Thanks for sharing
