DC has 4 promotions in 5 full seasons as a manager, we might not have the chance to have a consolidation season for another 4/5 years. I get your drift but if youve had 4 promotions why not go for another? its up for grabs right now so why not push for it? without better quality in goal and in defence we cannot get promoted so why not gamble and bring a couple of expensive players in? goalkeeper and centre-half maybe because ones we are interested in, the clubs wont let us have?

Exactly. DC will have identified targets, if he cannot get them then why buy anybody just to silence the baying masses. Been there, done that.
If it means consolidation for a season so be it.

Realistically, bar a run of epic proportions (which, to be fair, we have done before) then there are only 2 playoff spots (possibly 3) that look up for grabs at this stage and about 11 teams who would still fancy a crack at it. With Bolton, Scunny, Sheff United and Bradford all looking pretty good and, one assumes, all with the capacity to make significant investments to get over the line. This is not League 2 or the Conference - the calibre of the top sides and the depth of their pockets will likely make it harder to close the gap. I'm not saying we have no chance - just that I don't think this is a 'throw the kitchen sink at it' moment. We're sitting pretty, if we can put together a good run we could sneak into the playoffs which would be a fantastic achievement but a massive bonus for our first year back at this level with new owners who are still finding their feet. It's a nice position to be in but it's not as though we are sitting 3rd/4th within striking distance of automatic promotion. We have a middling chance of entering an end of season semi-lottery where we would likely be completing with sides who invested big time in January and from a higher base point - I think it probably demands a measured approach rather than going 'all in', which seems to be what we are doing.
The signing of Partington to me suggests we are as much looking to the future as the present and I think that's quite exciting in itself.
