....for me, the first visit to Valley tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Some s*head mates went this year, last season, said it was a nightmare to get to. I'm not put off! We are parking and tubing..
I've watched Charlton at Selhurst and Upton Park, never seen us win. The match at west ham's ground stands out because at the end, we were kept in. A few hundred Gas kept in by a lonely spritely oap fella wearing a uniform, including hat. Some of the more impatient amongst us had had enough and decided to 'surge' him, resulting in the gates being broken out of and this fella's hat went flying! The chap was fine, just a bit naive stewarding led to this situation..
Anyways, we should be full of confidence after a successful Christmas.
Safe journey, Gas let's hope for a positive start to 2017, happy new year to GasHeads wherever you are..

I wonder how long it would take to get the light railway from the City through the Isle of Dogs, walk through the Thames tunnel to Greenwich and get the bus down to the Valley?

I went twice in the 70s it was a big ground with a small crowd by those days. The only 2 things that stick out in my memory are the tiny stand on one side and the truly massive terrace on the other side bits of which were overgrown and fenced off, must have been very impressive when it was packed out back in the day.

It was a massive terrace back in the day. I lived in South London in the 80s when the pitch was knee high in weeds, a truly sorry sight.

Been to The Valley just the once, to watch them play Man C, very soon after the death of one of their academy players. It was, understandably, a sombre atmosphere outside the ground, but once inside it was an enjoyable experience with a full ground and good view.

I wonder how long it would take to get the light railway from the City through the Isle of Dogs, walk through the Thames tunnel to Greenwich and get the bus down to the Valley? The DLR will take you from City to Canary Wharf (I think you have to change trains there) and then under the river to Greenwich and a short bus ride from there. I read somewhere you can't get a London Bridge overground (trains are from Victoria tomorrow). I'll be getting the Jubilee Line to North Greenwich and bussing it from there...

it looked to me that the tunnel entrance is a bit closer to the ground than North Greenwich. And both look walkable, if you don't mind a bit of that
if you don't know the Big Smoke, the DLR is very pretty and worth it, especially on a clear day

Are you looking at an old map or do you like walking through tunnels? Like Epping said, the DLR now goes under the river and will take you to the centre of downtown Greenwich. There'll be plenty of buses from there (even on a public holiday) if the walk doesn't appeal. As for timings, (and you don't say where you're starting from) the TfL route planner is pretty good. Have a good day.

2011 on a Tuesday night in the relegation season. We wore that horrendous yellow & black quartered away shirt, Wayne Brown scored a rasper & we just about hung on for a 1-1 draw.
Christ we were shocking that year.

Saw the 4-0 defeat at the Valley in March 1980. Massive terracing small crowd 4,858.Almost relegated out of div 2 under Terry Cooper
Last time we won at Charlton was 29 March 1958. 16 visits since then without a win. Surely time to put that right in 2017.

Have a good day.. I didn't know that, haven't lived there since the early 90s. I remember when it first opened and took a ride on it for the pure novelty of it having no driver. It crashed on one of its test runs as I recall and nearly fell off the end. Have they built a new tunnel or do they use the pedestrian one?

I remember mid-week mid-90's losing 4-2 there. We started with a 4-5-1 formation with big target man Joker Four playing up front on his own. That brilliant plan failed and we went 2-0 down in 15 minutes. DLR: Not sure when they extended it. New tunnel. I guess it would have been dangerous to use the existing Victorian pedestrian tunnel. Health & Safety gone mad... UTG

Oops. My bad. I remember going straight from work in a suit and feeling very out of place. Early/mid 90's I lived in East Croydon and walked to Selhurst Park and we drew 2-2. Thinking about it - the one and only time I have ever walked to a game...

Early 90s Upton Park. Think we went there twice that year, once to West Ham, the other Charlton. I think Rob Lee was playing for them back then.
I don't remember much else, think we lost 1-0 and there was a bloke in the Rovers end wearing West Ham shirt and Rovers tracksuit top.
On the tube, after the game, some drunk old boy came staggering up, started talking to us about football, said he was a Manchester United fan, then pulled the emergency stop and promptly staggered on up the carriages. There was a long delay before we were on our way. However, the next tube station we were met with a sea of British Transport Police and barking Alsatian dogs on the platform. Fortunately some nice member of the public explained it was nothing to do with the Rovers fans, but we still got escorted back to Paddington.

1990, 2 all draw at Selhurst Park, only part I remember is Devon White collecting the ball and waltzing thru their defence to slot the ball in. Scored at our end.

We all got split up on the night and as we left the pub to walk back to the coach two gangs of Vietnamese were fighting, well the ones with meat cleavers were fighting the others were bleeding, shreiking or running, your mate Egger was there. I remember that Cardiff lad too,you would have thought he would of said thanks for the lift, sat at the front and shut it,what a berk. I heard some sad news yesterday about another old Tote ender and proper Rovers supporter who has passed on,Bernie, was a sound bloke.
