Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup 1969-70 to 2015-16.
Since I started watching Bristol Rovers in the 1969-70 season, it seems that we’ve had a generally dull time in the FA Cup, punctuated by very occasional (and therefore all the more exciting) high points and rare (but nonetheless painful) embarrassments. League tables “don’t lie”. But how can we assess Rovers’ performance in the FA Cup? How “kind” has the draw been to us over the years? Have we been challenged with a huge variety of opponents from different divisions? Or have we tended to come up against the same old clubs, often from the same division we were in at the time? In this mini-series of seven posts, I’ll set out the answers to some of these questions. To keep the analysis manageable, I’ve only covered the era since I started watching in 1969-70, up to the 2015-16 season. The attached chart shows wins (blue) and defeats (red) in the 96 ties between 1969-70 and 2015-16, grouped by the relative league statuses of Rovers and our opponents. In the left-most column, we’re three divisions below our opponent; in the right-most column we’re four tiers above our opponent (ahh, I remember Merthyr!).
