Alex Ferguson hardly had a stellar career as a player, more of a journeyman than anything else. 171 goals in 317 appearances, mostly in the scottish 1st division, Scottish League top scorer, 41 apperances for Rangers, 7 international caps. And this was when Scotland were respected. Surely within the definition of 'played at a decent level'? 6 clubs in 17 years is a journeyman? Serves me right for not checking my facts first. I knew he played a few games for Rangers, Dunfermline and Falkirk, but I had no idea he was that prolific as a goalscorer.
Once again, I prove myself to know f**k all about f**k all
Mind you, I have read on here several times that Scottish football is s**te, so maybe I was half right:)

Thought that he played a number of Scotland representative games, but not full caps. Obviously a good player though.

just to clarify my op,i meant "if they havnt played" in other words a person who played football say on the downs for 10 years has played but many have never played. any professional footballer has obviously played however average their career was. a small example for me was a couple of men who stand by me didnt know you couldnt be offside from a goal kick,i think anyone who played would know that. obviously thats a technical thing but i wondered if people believed that ex players viewed the game differently. of course lots of good opinions and various views already expressed on here.

You say that, but when my lad was playing boys football a few years ago, I recognised the opposition linesman (a dad helping out) as a ex local footballer who played to Western league standard, and he didn't know you could be offside from a throw in!

You can't. I missed out the word 'not' after could! I also saw at a kids game a former professional footballer (and father of a current one) arguing with a ref that if the ball is more than 3/4 over the line, then it is out of play.

I'm not too sure to be honest, just going off Wikipedia - it says 'Scotland XI', but when you click through it links to the Scottish National Team page, so assumed they were one and the same. Might not be though, I'm no expert on the career of Sir Alex Ferguson!. Exlcuding internationals though, I reckon the criteria of 'played at a decent level' is still met.
