I saw on Sky Sports news that former Middlesbrough forward John O'Rourke has passed away aged 71. He was the guy involved in a collision with our keeper Bernard Hall on 31/12/66 which left Bernard in a coma for 16 days and, as a result, ended his career. There was never any blame attached to O'Rourke. I think it was just classed as "one of those things".
I think Bernard Hall passed away in his forties but I'm not totally sure on that.
Fixture planners were just as good in those days. With very few motorways then the Middlesbrough contingent would not have celebrated New Year's Eve at home!

Yes, RIP John O'Rourke. No blame attached for what happened. It was one of my earliest matches that I saw, having started that season following World Cup win. Am pretty sure Bernard Hall died some years ago but hopefully wrong. I seem to remember reading about it. John O was a newsagent in the Bournemouth area for many years following retirement having played for AFCB for a couple of seasons.

Bernard Hall is still around met him and spoke about his career especially the Man Utd FA cup tie at Old Trafford in 1964.

I too believe that Bernard is still amongst us, and didn't we have a relative (a nephew I believe)on the forum a while ago discussing him? In any event Bernard was a fine goalie despite his lack of height, and it was a shame the way that his career ended. I remember the incident quite well and no blame could be attached to John O'Rourke, and Bernard was typically brave.
It just reinforces to me how much the game has changed over the years.

Went on to be groundsman at the Imperial Ground, Knowle ... where Rovers went on to train for a while. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Hall_(footballer)

Sadly on this occasion, the mists of time have descended upon me.

I was A little boy that day at Old Trafford that day in a crowd of 55,722. We lost 4-1 but it would have been a lot worse dad it not been for Bernard. He fully deserved the tributes from Denis Law , George Best and Bobby Charlton after the game
