Your youth may well be dim and distant, but unfortunately so is your memory. The 1974 promotion was achieved on a Friday night at Roots Hall, Southend not on a Saturday afternoon at Eastville. I know cos I was there & I've still got one of Frankie Prince's socks!

It's not so much where it was achieved as the chance for us to celebrate on our own soil, which we did later I recall, not after some open top bus parade but with a home match. You're right I can't remember the details but I can remember the pitch invasion. Wasn't at Southend, I was only 14 and it would have been a school night

How we all counted even the months when we told people our age, as kids. We all wanted so much to be older and yet now we wouldn't mind so much, being younger. Well, I certainly would be very happy if I were at least 20 years younger and in good health. That team of 74 and the graffiti saying don't say God, say Megson. I won't forget that in a hurry. We had the Watney cup and so much to look back upon. I hope that today's young generation have much better times to look forward to

Great read Nick and spot on with my thoughts.
This part resonated with me so well: "The truth is moments like this just don't happen to a Bristol Rovers fan."
So true it doesn't...except it did!
I'm so grateful I was a part of it even if it was through a grainy video to the other side of the world as my son Skyped me from the Mem for the last 10 minutes of the game... and what a ten minutes to pick! Ten minutes that will last in mine and all Gashead's memories for ever!

The roar matched the aguero goal v qpr and the Liverpool ghost goal v chelsea in champions league. Knowing we've done it when know we shouldn't have.

Good read and spot on about celebrating promotion at our home ground. The Eastville roar was real, ask anyone at the league cup matches against Man U, Stoke, Birmingham, Newcastle and Villa in the early 70s. UTG!

You forgot the game against Norwich - we won in extra time, one of the loudest and best games I ever attended. Talking of Southend, I hitchhiked up with the well-known character Car park Nige - old school chum.

I went to all the above ones, I wasn't at the Norwich which I think was 3-1 but I might be wrong. UTG!

I was at that Norwich game, and it was the best game I've ever seen. Three defenders scored for Rovers. The atmosphere was electric, and you could literally touch it.
