Yesterday for me was a kind of epiphany. In a pub, in York, (surprise, surprise you may say) yesterday pre match, for the first time in my life, I met Alan Warboys.
Incredible.
I'm too young to remember his playing days, but the legacy lives on to this day. What a gentleman. What a legend. What a day!
Phil Kite. Vaughan Jones. Paul Randall. Bobby Cambell (rip). Stuart Taylor. Peter Aitken. Christian McClean. Even Brian Drysdale (....who's now alright!) Are just a few names off the top of my head that take time and money out to watch us. There was even a coach of ex players at Wemberlee..
Apparently, Craig Hinton was in Northampton away end!(?)
I'm sure other clubs have this too, but what is it that makes sometimes non Bristolians follow us after their career finishes?

I live here in Ireland and often see Liam Burns and Gary Twigg. They still look out for our results and have fond memories of living in Bristol (even though wasn't great on the pitch!)

See Josser Watling and Harold Jarman regularly at the Mem too. Both always happy to have a quick chat.

Often see Christian McClean in the crowd at games, anyone remember that goal where he got knocked out making the header?

At my local AFL club the past players are treated like royalty. There is a past players club that any ex-player can join and if you have played a certain number of games at full AFL level then you get life membership for free. The past players have their own room in the stadium with a bar etc for matchdays and they get terrific seats in the main stand for every home game. They also get free parking at the stadium on matchdays to help as many of the older players as possible to attend. Not sure if Rovers do anything currently but with a new stadium with plenty of spare seats (at least initially!) on the horizon it would be a great touch if something similar could be organised to allow ex-players, particularly more elderly ex-players, to come along to games regularly and socialise with other players and fans of course. It costs the club only a small amount and generates a lot of good-will and a community feeling within the club and between the players. Maybe Rovers do this already but I'm just not aware of it.
