He should get another year whether we are in league 1 or 2. He might however get more attractive offers from league 2 sides if we go up. Exeter, plymouth, cheltenham and Yeovile would be quite local and the probability is that at least 3 will be in league 2

Manse isn't the only player that should be jettisoned either, anyone that went to Portsmouth could tell you a few of our squad can't make the step up to the next level judging by that performance in a highly charged atmosphere which I hope can be witnessed more often by us fans in the not too distant future. UTG So come on lads, play your hearts out to get us promoted! Then we can sack you, because you're not good enough for the next level. Of course, should you fail, we know that you are one of the better squads in this division and we'll just make a few changes. Got that? Right, does anybody need more incentive than this? Football's a funny game.

Football's a funny game. Not sure it really works like that though. It's more about making choices round the edges and improving the squad where you can incrementally. At 34, and out of contract, Mansell looks vulnerable if we're thinking about where we can improve the squad at a higher level. Last time we made that jump there were examples of player who either had to become squad players or in the end were moved out because they weren't really up to it; Sandell, Walker, Carruthurs, Hinton etc. If you can make that judgement beforehand it might be brutal but is probably fairer on everyone. Mansell is the best defensive midfielder we've had since Campbell but if we want to compete at the top end of League 1 then chances are we need an upgrade in that position.

Actually, I don't disagree with you Irish. Just that I thought the word "jettisoned" in the post I replied to was a little over the top. I think the downside of our new fortune might be a tendency to adopt the sort of attitude that one hears on national football phone-ins - a string of people who regard anything other than a victory to their side as a personal affront. I hope that, if we are promoted, we at least give players a chance to prove themselves.

I do think it's pretty remarkable that we have managed to have this much success with the core of a team that is made of 1)players who got us relegated from the league and 2)non-league journeyman. I appreciate we have added crucial quality to the squad but many of the core players fit that bill. Makes the team very likeable - would definitely be a shame to lose that. Lets hope Wael's talk of building through the academy comes to fruition - now I think that is a potentially exciting vision for everyone.

You need to define journeyman, Irish, and tell us who you mean.

You need to define journeyman, Irish, and tell us who you mean. Wasn't really meant as a derogatory term. Just referring to the fact that the likes of Taylor, Sinclair, Puddy, Leadbitter and James Clarke have spent a decent wadge of their careers bouncing around non-League. I don't think that's an unfair comment-just noting that it is impressive that the core of DC's squad is made up of people who have not previously performed to this standard at this level.

Whilst I agree, I would also point out that perhaps when they were given their chance to play for (I hate the word) but Big club for the national league. I mean no disrespect to teams in the national league, but just look at the crowd figures for last season. Playing for a team, it could have been any old established league team but that is going to be a massive pull. All I can say is well done to them all, should we stick by them yes, even if it is said "look we are going to give you another year but you must realise that you may only be a squad player as we will be bringing in others". As for Mansell, the man has bags of knowledge and with the new way the board want to go their must be a place we could offer him, extra year and his coaching badges?

I don't think I've ever seen so many grammatical errors in such a short stream of consciousness. His old English teacher must be so proud. i think its a bit of a cheap shot to patronisingly be critical of grammatical errors of another person on a football forum, such errors dont mean a person lacks intelligence and i really dislike your smug contemptuous attitude in truth

I do edit when it becomes silly to read. There are quite a few who pick up on certain errors but I don't mind if I learn something from it rather than it being just a critical post
